I'm a Brownie leader, we're taking our unit away for 2 nights this weekend! One thing my mum always did for my brother and I was pack socks, underwear & t-shirt together, rolled up with an elastic band, so that we would have everything together when getting dressed. I still do that for myself when I travel, except I use a packing cube to keep all the rolls together 1 one place now, not elastic bands. Before a trip we would always pack together so that I knew what I brought, roughly where in my bag the stuff was, and had half a chance of getting it back into the bag by myself at the end. As a leader now that's so helpful. I've seen both ends of the scale, from 'no that's not mine' (despite being clearly labelled with her name 😂) to 'I KNOW Mummy packed my unicorn PJ's and I can't find them', with floods of tears as they were stolen/missing (No, Mummy hadn't packed the unicorn PJ's 😒 In fact, Mummy hadn't packed any PJ's, that Mummy needed your list!) And as for what to say for goodbyes, definitely not 'we'll miss you' or telling them about what you're going to do when they're away, as that can also not help with homesickness. I'd stick to a 'you're going to have so much fun, I can't wait to hear about your adventures' type of goodbye. Right, I'm going to use this motivation to pack my rucksack for the weekend I think! Now, where did I put those chocolates for after the girls are in bed...

Hope he had an amazing time! My George went on his residential first week of May, 2 nights away, he loved it. They seemed quite young being the school changed it this year from year 5 residential to now year 4! I'm smiling as we had exactly the same packing list! 😅 Beki x

I hope he has a really fun time!! My daughter has not gone on any school trips like that. We live in the Chicagoland area. I think there’s a trip to DC in 8th grade they can go on but I don’t know how much that would cost! She’s almost done with 6th grade next week is her final week of school!

Hope he has a great time , I remember my first trip that we stayed away with the school was France and we wasn’t allowed to phone home but because I was so nervous and had accident the week before at school my mom wrote a letter and sent to the place I was staying and first day I woke up there the teacher handed me , made me feel so much better as I did have like anxiety attack and cried but that letter made me feel ok and safe and I then enjoyed my self . I do suffer with anxiety and other things but back then they didn’t really understand as much as they do now which I’m grateful for as my kids got the right support in school because the assessments and such . I’m sure he tell you all about his adventures when his home :) xx

Hi Rhi, I hope is all is well. Great video, thank you. My twin boys are going on their 4 night residential at the beginning of September, when they will just be starting Year 6. I am nervous about not being there for them but l know they will have a great time. They would have had one in Year 4 but that was cancelled due to Covid, so this will be the first time they are going away themselves! I am going to ask the school tomorrow to provide a list of what is needed, so l can start getting organised x2, as it will be here before l know it. xx

Schools in my area of Texas don't do trips like this, or school trips in general, because parents have to give permission on paper and most parents won't do it because they don't want their kids away from home out of their supervision that way unless it's for an academic competition or an athletic event type situation in High School. When I was a kid, my individual school had a few, but I went to a very tiny school and not all the students were allowed to go because of parental permission and it was such that if one was done, it was the whole school gong to a big event or a museum. I come from a very rural area where there are more cows and other livestock than people.

I never went on the residential trips when I was in school as my family couldn't afford them and the way my autism effects me means that I could not have coped with being away from home. But I remember my friends coming home 'clarried' as we say in Northern Ireland (that means 'absolutely filthy.' another word we use is 'Boggin''; which means 'so dirty you look like you fell in a bog') I'd be curious to know what state his clothes were in when he got home. We had a 'teambuilding' day at an outdoor park when I was in first year and most of us needed the spare clothes we were told to pack. The only problem was we were told to go in PE kit so we could be identified, but we had Games the next day, you couldn't tumble dry the kit due to the material, and most of us didn't have a spare set as it was stupidly expensive so there were a lot of irritated parents the next day when their kids got detentions for not having their kit as it was still wet. The next year the first years were allowed to go in their own clothes! Tip for the toothpaste, face creams etc for future residentials or for DLP. You can buy 'refillable' lip gloss tubes on ebay and amazon (think like the packaging of a lancome Juicy Tube but with the applicator thingy able to be popped off to fill it) I've found they hold enough for 1 person for a week and they're handy when you're only away for a few nights or if everyone uses different toothpastes. In my house we have 3 different toothpastes for 2 people (Regular, 'Sensitive' and 'Aloe Vera' (for mouth ulcers) so they're a lifesaver for us. Just label them with the contents and who its for and throw it in the toiletry bag. Anyone separate toiletries into 'bedroom' and 'bathroom' when they go away so they don't have to sort through everything to find their toothbrush? I tend to keep separate bags for 'bedroom' (deodorant, wipes, micellar water, lotion, Perfume, lip balm, SPF, moisturiser etc) 'bathroom' (toothbrush, toothpaste, hand wash (Just in case) face wash) 'hair', (serum, dry shampoo, hairbrush and hair bobbles etc) and 'bath/ shower' (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, shaving things) so I can leave the bag in the bathroom, shower etc or have it separated out in my bag. If I do the 'dump out' I'll loose something.

It might be easier to pack each outfit in a seperate bag, so Will doesn't have to go through each bag for 1 outfit.

I thought about this, but it was possible he may have had to change once / twice during the day due to mud and I worried it may upset him having to take something out of an outfit for another day x
