This packable Altoids wood stove is a new design that I came up with after a fair amount of research. It's cheap, easy to make and best of all it's very lightweight and can be carried in a pocket!

I really like this design; it starts with an actual base and a box that can contain all other parts. Less material to manufacture means less work but I think the big deal here is that you have a solid base, so the walls are not prone to shifting about with the terrain. GREAT JOB! This could even be scaled up to a degree...

Yeah this idea is new to me as well. I've always made my stoves from cans but the metal is just too thin and degrades too much from the heat. Cookie sheets are stout, easy and cheap to find, and also probably deal with the heat pretty well.

That's outstanding! One problem I usually see with the small twig stoves is the size of the chamber is really restrictive. I bet with a bit of thought one could make a double decker tower to double the size of the chamber and still have it fit inside the Altoids tin.

❤️Thanks for the project idea! ❤️ I made one the other day - HERE'S SOME TIPS: 1 - You can use thin duct metal. It's quite light and cuts easily with tin snips. 2 - Use old credit card/gift cards for the template. They are almost perfect - just snip off a bit of the corners. 3 - Drill multiple clean holes with a 3/16" bit (supported on a flat wood surface). Think IKEA strainer. 4 - Orient the feed port over the open lid. It collects burned material nicely. 5 - You can fit a a small lighter and a little bag of cotton-ball fire starters inside the tin. Or SOL Tinder-Quik material. I would love to hear from anyone else who has made one ... any luck with boiling water? IMHO I think the burn chamber is just too small to get an effective fire going. I had a tough time heating a pot of water before it was simply "full" of material. PS - I only used twigs, no fat wood.
@WayPointSurvival
@WayPointSurvival 2 года назад
Thanks for the ideas and thank you for watching. Edit: just remember that some duct work metal is made from galvanized metal and puts off toxic fumes when it is heated. So, you would need to thoroughly burn off the galvanization before you would safely want to cook food or boil water with it.

Honestly this would be a good thing to keep in your car. At least for those of us in rural cold climate. You never know.... You could end up in a ditch and no one knows. Tea candles are good to keep too. It doesn't take much for you to not freeze to death. And it's cheap. Hopefully One never needs any of this and can forget about it. But what IF........ Edit.... Soooo..... And thinking about that.... I bet a tea candle or two can fit in that kit as well. Then you have good fire starter with you at all times. Super cool deal going on here!!!

Should be pretty simple. Trace around the Altoids tin on the cookie sheet, then either trace a bit inside that line before cutting, or cut it out and use the sanding drum on the Dremel to reduce the size til it fits. You'll be de-burring anyway, so I'll be going that route. Then just rest your pieces on the open Altoids tin to mark the spacing for your slots, etc.. That's going to be my approach anyway. Good luck on yours! 😊

I love all your stove designs but the wood stove I feel makes the most sense. I think you could boil a full size pot on this and sticks are almost universally available.

In addition, you've also got the Altoids tin to make and store charcloth for making more fires. Excellent idea!

another way of doing altoids stove get 4 coach bolts a bit shorter in length than the tin drill holes so the bolts go through each corner the shape a piece of mesh to fit inside and you can pack it all away in the tin use coach bolts so there is no leakage from the tin.

I've been building a survival/hiking kit and was kinda shocked at some of the prices for mini stoves assuming they'd be a couple bucks.. Then i went down a rabbit whole of trying to remember DIY tin-can stoves and came across this video alonge the way. I am blown away by how smart it is. It's such a clever usage of an altoid tin i'm stumped you did not patent and bank on it. Anyways i'm definitely going to DIY this as i have the same altoid container next to me.

Thanks for the vids. I subscribed after watching this video. I made this stove today, as it's hard to get altoids in Austria I used a grether's pastiles tin 110g. I found a credit card makes a perfect fit. I'm planning on trying my stove out tomorrow, with wood and also with wood/wax fire lighters. They're small cubes like an esbit but made of wood fibers and wax.
