Watch me unbox and test these vintage hard drives that were packed horrifically with no protection.(unless a single strip of cardboard counts) Truly a shame how careless eBay sellers can be.
These were sold as working for the most part, but that may have changed have being handled by USPS. Watch to see how they did!

Same, it’s really unique! I’ve been wanting to get some later models for myself.

Wow, you got a Maxtor drive that actually still works ok. I don't see many of those, they either have the click of death or they have a ton of bad sectors

Wow, that's strange. I have found them to quite reliable. (From the late 90's onwards) I have 6 working ones, and I mainly got them in lots untested. Maybe I'm luckier than I thought.

Sadly that has more packing then a lot I received but I hadn't bought it for the drives more for the ram in the lot had caps floating around the box from two mators surprisingly the only 2 that were dead or unsafe out of the 10 that were banging around with nothing in the box to prevent this. Ram survived which is what I cared about but it was a shame about those drives I know they more then likely wont last. One odd thing the one maxtor runs way over it rated speed missing one cap haven't had a chance to replace it to see if it will clam down to be able to test it safely without it killing itself( drive is a 5400 sounded like a 15K scsi).

I guess that just had no packing then because this lot had just one piece of cardboard. Very shameful. That Maxtor is very interesting. I wonder how it sounds.

Strange, i have never heard a 5400RPM caviar with high pitched bearings like your 26400. Likely has a JVC motor like the higher pitched 5200RPM caviars.

I understand your frustration with this packing job. We sometimes send hard drives into a recovery center when we cant recover by normal means and i try to use original shipping boxes like what a hdd company would use when you RMA a hdd with them. I like them and the drive is in a anti static bag and held firmly in place so it doesnt move. I believe that is the most crucial step in making sure the drive arrives safely and that the data can be recovered. No sense in sending it to them all loose and moving around itll just make the recovery that much more costly and impossible. Hard drives are so delicate. Treat them with respect! Anyway nice collection!

Thanks! If only eBay sellers cared as much as you do!

Having those Caviars whacked due to bad shipping is a crime against hard drives. I have two Caviars in my boneyard, but those are electronics failure (WDAC2340 has a voice coil driver failure; WDAC1210 head read/write amp just gave up one day on a FreeDOS install. Why do all my 30-year-old electronics keep breaking down on me?! Luckily, I have another WDAC1210 that works.) I had my Bigfoot TS show up LOOSE in a box. I was worried and not pleased. Somehow, the drive worked anyway! (That's one hell of a drive! Come on, bring back the 5.25" form factor for cheap, big, not-fast storage, you cowards!)

Don't even get me started! When I saw the packing I was filled with utter disgust. Plus, the seller was unapologetic and rude to add insult to injury. You got really lucky with that Bigfoot, especially considering they are heavier(making damage more likely). It would be really cool to see a modern 5.25. The capacities could probably reach 40TB, while still being somewhat affordable. Also, people still build giant gaming PC's so it's not like they wouldn't fit. Although, with Windows already being practically unusable on a mechanical HDD as it is, it would likely be secondary storage.

For some reason I wrote a comment here but it got under a random short instead… RU-vid is crazy. Anyways here’s another case of sellers being ridiculous… I would assume people know hard drives are fragile. Luckily it seems to have gone pretty well despite that. I have had multiple drives from different manufacturers that acted like that U4 here, sounding bad at first and recovering. I’m not sure if it’s because of the shipping or maybe because they sat unused for so long but yeah it can happen. I’ve seen that happening on videos of people that are checking out ewaste PCs too. As for the caviars, I guess the seektest might recover, or maybe they could act like one of my 23200, when it sits for just a few hours the seektest struggles, but afterwards if you restart it, it sounds totally normal.

Yea, maybe the media was remagnetized or something after the restarts. The caviars messed up seektest seems to be a common issue, I saw more like this on YT. At least they work.

I was expecting almost all of those to be dead, that packaging was awful. I actually believe that the Caviars maybe didn't have stiction as I have never had one act like that except when they are handled very badly. The actuator may have gotten slammed around a little for that to happen then it gets to a part of the platter it should not be on, basically a little outside the parking area where the heads shouldn't be. Maybe that is what happened to the Caviar 36400 and it is physically damaged. Also not sure if you like recommendations but maybe show the drive a little longer in each shot, and also it hurt a little to hear the drive audibly bang on the surface you were working on when setting them down. Another thing is when the drive is spinning down still I would not move the drive as I have seen where you can actually shift the actuator and then the heads land where they shouldn't, you can in some cases cause the heads to contacts the platters due to the force of shifting them while the platters come to a stop. Just a recommendation sorry if I complain a little too much, I handle my hard drives like eggs : ))

I kinda want to think it’s stiction just because it’ll make me feel better lol. I really wanted a fully working 36400. Also, I’m totally open to recommendations and suggestions! I’ll keep what you said in mind for my future videos.

Right?? I was just a little disappointed the caviars ended up being apart of the drives that weren’t working properly.
