While searching satellite maps for rivers to paddle I came across the Blaeberry river near Golden BC. It looked great and checked several boxes: glacial fed, bright coloured water, some fun rapids, winding braids and gravel bars, in a landscape of Rocky Mountains, and long enough to do over several days. There were some unknowns too, like how much wood and trees in the water would there be? Is the water high enough, or would it be too high? Would the flow be very fast? Are there any hidden technical rapids that would sneak up on us?
We did portage around the two tight and dangerous canyons in the middle of the river, around Thompson falls, so we spent two days on the water and one day in the middle was spent shuttling and just enjoying this beautiful slice of paradise.
Thanks for watching!

You have been on some amazing trips this year! I’m guessing you had little to no beta on a trip like this. Very impressive.

Very little beta, yeah, just photos from previous years and satellite maps.

Blaeberry! Just north of Golden. I’ve never ventured north of Golden, I have family in Golden and south of Golden so I’ve always stayed on the south side. Beautiful country out there, the Columbia river valley. Bittern Lake, Mitten Lake, 9 Bay Lake…little treasures of the Columbia Range. Another fantastic video, Luke!

Stumbled across your channel a few days ago. I have watched many of your journeys now. I am brand new to hiking and just tackling smaller distances right now. I aspire to hike to as many fire lookouts as I can before winter hits. Could you provide some info on your packraft? You are inspiring me to take to adventure immediately.

Hey man! There's a small packrafting community here in canmore/calgary that would love to do this! ...where did you put in and take out? This looks pretty chill compared to whats described in paddling maps....😊

Fantastic. When that hold music kicked in I was bumping my head lol. I like how you pivoted to exploring the rivers now after you've hiked everything in the vicinity. what's next? rock climbing? )

Hey Luke, this trip looks awesome! Where was your put in and take out on the 2nd day? Am looking at attempting the same thing.

The second day we started near Thompson Falls trailhead, walking a little ways up river from there to add in the fun rapid section there above the campground next to the road. The take out was the bridge at Golden Donald Upper Rd.

Thanks for taking us along on this trip. Funny thing, at 10:00 the brief bit of music is the same as the hold music I get when calling about my student loan! Whenever I'm on hold with them I'll be thinking of pack rafting haha!
@lifeofluke
@lifeofluke Год назад
Yep, that music choice was intentional because to retrieve the vehicle I was 'on hold' from the river, like an intermission

We did hike down to check out the falls, but bypassed both canyons using my vehicle

Great video. How do you figure out which rivers to run, and if its the right time of year, whether its safe etc. ???
@lifeofluke
@lifeofluke Год назад
Well, I look up as much info as I can find, paddling/whitewater webpages, maps, photos people post, etc. and if it looks like it could possibly be good, the real test is to go there in person to see the water levels and conditions. This was the case with this river. Walk around, go for a hike. And there is the chance that it won't be the right time, you have to accept that.
