Paco de Lucia's original sextet concert 1988 (Carles Benavent, Rubem Dantas, Jorge Pardo, Pepe)

"My Life With Paco..A Short Story" As a young lad, I traveled to Europe, to Spain, in search of Flameñco. Walking those mythical, narrow streets for hours, I stumbled upon Calle (Street) Ilustracion #7....the home of Paco de Lucia. I bravely, yet nervously, rang the bell and his lovely mother, Lucia, welcomed this lonely stranger in , escorting me to where Paco was studying in the back sunroom. Later Lucia, with food & drink at hand, treated us to an early dinner….a typical Mediterranean custom I knew so very well as a Hellene ( Greek ) back in Chicago. Paco tried to explain to me, this Americano Stranger …(we were the same age, BTW) that it was a typical Spanish custom to serve any stranger who entered their home. I replied…” SOY.. “HELLENO ..HOMBRE !" …" Nuestra Tradición de dar la Bienvenida a Los Extraños es Legendaria"... “¡Nosotras Alimentamos al Mundo…ENTERO!” ( I am “Hellenic”...our tradition of welcoming strangers into our home is legendary....WE FEED THE ENTIRE WORLD, I replied ! ). They both nodded in approval and Mom smiled. We spoke and played what seemed like hours and, at the end, I promised to arrange a concert for him in Chicago. He offered to teach me in Algeciras ( his summer home ).....yet ,foolishly, I became entangled with a beautiful young lady from South Africa...GRAVE MISTAKE. I would regret this for the rest of my life, indeed. Later on Paco confessed that.."He Would Have Done The Same"...HA ! Before I left Spain, he again made me promise to set up a concert in Chicago and I agreed...Wholeheartedly. Years passed when, back in Chicago, I established the "Flameñco Guitar Studies" at the Guitar Dept. of the famed "Arlington School of Music", in Arlington Heights, IL. With these credentials, I worked up enough courage to approach famed Impresario. "Harry Zelzer".. of the "Allied Arts Corp" at Orchestra Hall in Chicago and, as he quibbled ( money, of course ) with Paco's International Impresario.. "Sol Hurok" ..in New York City, I intensely expressed my opinion to .."YES"...“Bring this Phenom to America !!". They agreed to the final price…. YES.! I WON !… and thus persuaded both of them to bring Paco de Lucia to Chicago for a gala concert. Zelzer even agreed to also bring the fabulous...Agustín Castellón..."Sabicas" (The Historical “King of the Flameñco Guitar") on the same Guitar Concert Series including,, at the top of the roster…His Imperial Highness…the immortal..”Andres Segovia”. This proved to be the greatest "Guitar Series" in Chicago's History…presenting the “Essence and Glory of True Flameñco !” to it’s quintessential place on Music’s..." Mt.Olympus”. I called Paco long distance (no cell phones then) and he told me his agent informed him of his Chicago debut. Paco then quickly asked me to grab my guitar and preceded in working with me on "Entre Dos Aguas" as I was holding the phone, glued to my chin...for over an hour. No cell phones then....Ouch! “Que No... Hombre !” "NO NO... La Menor 7"...¨COÑO¨, Paco would scream. WHAT ? OMG ! “No Maldita Sea". "JUGAR CORRECTAMENTE.... MARICON !! ( how rude ). I simply laughed, knowing I was being trained by the.... Best in the World, no less. This went on for 30 minutes more until he was satisfied with my results. He arrived in Chicago and, staying at my apartment, we played all night. "Beer"..."Pizza"..and..."Cigarettes" ! The next day , we drove to Orchestra Hall on Michigan Ave, and rehearsed there with the sound and lighting engineers. That evening came. Paco played flawlessly to the utter shock of the audience...top professional Guitarists from all corners of the United States, Canada and Mexico.....riveted into their seats. SOLD OUT ! They never heard a guitar sound so explosive, so emotional, so flawless technically.... so Espanol...so GITANO ! ..... ESPANOLISIMA !! It came time for his last piece...his world famous...."Entre Dos Aguas" ...and I walked onto that famed stage and accompanied him…. to the gasps and never ending screams of the audience... the "Latinas y Latinos" …. in dance form, drowning out our performance with perpetual ...."OLE'S !" (ask me what happened at Greek Town after his historic concert....embarrassing ! ). That following day, at the airport, Paco asked me to join him on his tour across the Southeastern USA. This is when I was Reborn. This is where my career began.....getting to know the intimate Paco, his loves and fears, the secrets of his monstrous technique ... repositioning both my hands to achieve much faster and lyrical speed, phrasing and with correct study habits. Years later, Paco called and informed me of his new affiliation with AL Di Meola and John McLaughlin in their "Friday Night in San Francisco Tour" at Chicago's Auditorium Theatre...a legendary concert hall with ultimate perfection in Acoustics..second only to the Majestic Ancient Holy Theatre of ("Epidauvros" in ELLAS ( Greece ). I arrived at that afternoon's rehearsal and noticed Paco's sound was awful...couldn't hear his guitar over Al and John's guitars . Without thinking, I ran back home, retrieved my Sennheiser Microphone Paco used at Orchestra Hall, years before, ......to the utter joy and satisfaction of Paco and his sound engineers...… ( try talking your way out of a speeding ticket with an Illinois State Trooper, mind you.) Night came....the audience …..brimming with young eager, guitarists, whether Rockers, Jazz Pros, Country Artists from Nashville and famed Classical guitarists , they were All there….waiting to get a glimpse of this......."Paco de Lucia"….. "Who is He?” "What's Flameñco?, they all would ask. Lights dimmed to the constant rustling of hungry youth...then...it happened......ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE! Yes!….This "Paco de Lucia" simply exploded with "The Face of An Angel And With The Technique of A Demon" The audience gasped, going wild with hundreds of cigarette lighters ablaze in hand, to the sound of "The Holy Three". They Now All Knew Who "Paco de Lucia" was..."El Hijo de Lucia" ("The Son Of Lucia") "Musical History Had Been Made !" "The Gods Nodded in Approval on Olympus"" The next morning, I drove Paco and John to the airport...Al de Meola left on an earlier flight ….(HEY !.. Text me and I’ll tell you what happened at their hotel earlier that day regarding “ Fancy Boots” they wanted to buy ! ) Well, as their plane was ready to board, we said our goodbyes in typical Mediterranean Style...and Paco and I promised that We would attend each other's funeral.. ( "He who would be first to Die" ). Mind you....This is Tradition ! That was the last time I saw Paco. Sadly, he died first and I angrily realized that my passport had expired, at the last minute. I was all packed....ready to fly to Madrid. Yes, I broke my promise….It was too late for me to go. I was incarcerated in my studio at the ASM, shocked and immobile upon hearing of his death.... My Life with Paco ....flashing before my eyes. After all this time, and after these many, many years looking back.... I can only say......"Paco!" "Hermano Mio !" "Escuchame !" . "When it is my time to enter the Pearly Gates of Heaven (if I get there, that is) ...I'm bringing that Sennheiser Mic with me"......Together..We"ll jam all night..Yeah....with Sabicas. too.. did you say ?”. SI SENOOOR !! “The entire Universe will hear YOU again....LIVE! “ "Esperame, mi Amigo!" “Wait for me, My friend" Memories!

What a performance. It's a shame that Carles Benavent playing is mostly ignored by recording editor for some reason

Uno trata de encontrar las palabras para describir todas las emociones que se sienten al oir esta música, pero no es posible hallarlas, aún no se han inventado...decir que todo es perfecto es poco. Yo solo digo gracias Gran Creador del universo por regalarnos a este ser humano a quien dotaste de un talento en su máximo nivel posible. Sus dedos danzan sobre las cuerdas de la guitarra, la cual no es más que una extensión de su propio cuerpo. Este instrumento fue creado y preparado para que un día él naciese y lo hiciese parte de sí y nos deleitase justo ese día, donde se alinearon galaxias y sus constelaciones para, en un concierto inigualable, todos diesen su máximo y explotasen nuestra cabeza de emociones indecibles. Sólo lamento no haber apreciado las reacciones del público luego de cada interpretación. Sin duda aquel día se han ido a sus casas y no han vuelto a ser los mismos...

Omg,i must have been living under a rock. This show right here, I just watched on RU-vid,is one i could've seen live. This was played before i even heard of Paco De Lucia and this band, Wow! This brought me to tears, the last two songs and I don't know how or why because I was smiling. Thank you.

Se queda uno embobao escuchando a Paco, y al final con el solo de carles benabent ay ya apaga y vámonos porque es un solo de altura de mejor bajista del planeta y uno de los depositarios del metal de jaco pastorius, el junto a victor wotem, Marcus miller, son los mejores del mundo, lo bueno para cualquier flamenco auténtico que escuche esto, es que el solo de carles es como los de wotem o miller pero encima suena flamenco autentico eso ya te mata

I've played for 25+ years and I only found him this year. Man I feel dumb for that but glad these vids are archived here so he can live on influencing us and the next. We can't as humans loose any of this . It must be preserved

Sencillamente maravilloso, grandes músicos y excelentes composiciones, arreglos, sonido, un verdadera joya.
