Players will often tell you that adding lead tape will increase the stability and forgiveness of your paddle. But does it really? And if so, by how much? Watch and find out.

Thanks for doing this. Here is my big takeaway. 16mm is considered more plush/stable over a 14mm paddle. But you can take a 14mm (which is .3 ounces lighter for the 3X according to your spreadsheet) add .35 ounces of lead tape to get essentially the same weight / swing weight as the 16mm but have better stability by increasing the 14mm twist weight to 7.06-7.39 over the stock 16mm twist weight of 6.71.

Wow, this is really helpful info. Great to see the effects of placing the tape in different locations and the diminishing returns of adding 20g vs 10g. I have been playing with 5g lead on the bottom corners and now I will move them more toward the middle and add another 5g to each side now! Thank you!

I’m glad it helped! I’m going to start doing the same thing and move my weight more towards the sides rather than closer to the handle like I’ve been doing.

Braydon what a great video. It really shows what lead tape actually does to the twist rate in those spots. What would be nice to add to that spread sheet was starting swing weight then what the swing weight was with the 10g and 20g of lead tape. All this takes the guess work out of cause and effect of lead tape placement. Awesome loving your spread sheet.

this is the kind of information that really proves the numbers and the effects of the tape...I never have used tape but I can see how it can affect aspects of the paddle....i get tapes from my old shop that they use for balancing tires, I wonder if the STEEL instead of the lead tape makes a difference since it is spread out more even though the weight is the same...lead is denser than steel so a half ounce of lead is a smaller piece than a half ounce of steel....not a big fan of lead from a health point of view...the steel weights are stick on also so it is just as effective but just spreads out the weight a bit more

The only feedback I would give is make sure your mic is a little louder than logan's, because your voice is quieter and it sounds a little funny to hear you talk in a normal voice and than logan starts talking in a way louder voice, that it a little distracting. Otherwise, it is easily on par with the competition. @@pickleballeffect

Why would you do the bottom corners with 20g when the obvious answer is middle of the paddle with more weight would be the highest TW number

Amazing Video!!! I'd be curious to see up paddle weight up to 8.7 oz and then adding lead tape in different locations if possible. The effects on swing and twist weight. Zane Navratil and Ben Johns has videos on where they put their lead tape. I'm just curious how those locations/lead tape amounts i.e. doubling up on middle + single on bottom(near handle) might affect the paddle. Obviously, everyone's play style/comfortable max paddle weight is different, but I'd be very curious to figure out "optimal" maxed out specs. P.S. does anyone know what pro womens, weigh their paddles up to? It seems mens typically range from 8.3-8.7oz

Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. I can’t do every possible combination but it would be fun to mimic a few setups from pros and see how it changes things. I do want to do a video on the optimal set up now that I’ve done a few of these experiments. I’ll do that next.

What if you put lead tape in all four corners?
@douglasmurdoch7247
@douglasmurdoch7247 10 месяцев назад
With that type of tape the weight is more spread out and diffused. Is it different if you use the precut 3g strips that are popular? Does it make a difference if all that weight is more concentrated into a smaller area with those precut strips?

Someone onCO’s discord said adding lead tape to the hole in the Vatic Alchemy noticeably increased twist weight. Makes no sense to me since it’s on axis (unless they just did the corners of the hole). Can you grab one of your paddles with a throat hole and run it stock and then with a strip of lead only on the lower part of the throat hole? The person used 2.5 grams of tungsten tape so imagine it was a longer piece than it would be with lead.
@pickleballeffect

Would placing lead tape around the entire paddle do anything other than making the paddle heavier? Do you have to pick spots for lead tape to make the sweet spot larger with more plow through?
@pickleballeffect
@pickleballeffect 3 месяца назад
If you did that then you'd still get the benefits of the added forgiveness and plow through. You just need to pick spots if you don't want the paddle to get too heavy on you.

I'm a dummie when it comes to this, but the idea is to increase stability so that hitting off-center balls can be a little easier and provide more control and a better shot? My thinking is, why not put lead tape on just 1 side of the paddle? Specifically the side facing down when I hold it. My grip is similar to ping pong with my index finger extended onto the bottom of the paddle face. If there is more weight and stability at the bottom, I would think this would create a more solid hold on the shot impact. Maybe this is a dumb idea but worth thinking through. Thoughts?
@pickleballeffect
@pickleballeffect 10 месяцев назад
I'm not sure I understand. You are thinking it might better to only put lead tape on one side of the paddle?
