Hudson River Walking Beam live steam model "Thomas Powell".
Part eleven
The Maiden Voyage!
Going back in time, gauge one!...
...and the journey was a long one!...One that took over 5 years and over five thousand hours of work to complete!
"Thomas Powell" is clearly the most challenging scratch built steamboat model I've made up to now, and the one I spent the most time working on, but I think it was well worth it!
Watching this model gently, steadily "walking along" is quite a sight!
Just imagine what it must have been to watch the real paddle steamer majestically passing by from the rivershore, as many locals did back then!
Unfortunately, the only two surviving "walking beam" engine steamboats still in existence today are both static ones! (Eureka, San Francisco and Ticonderoga, Vermont)
The "Walking Beam" name came from Indians living along the rivers; they coined a name for the paddle wheelers which In English meant "mill that walks on the water"!
The Marine Walking Beam engine of the famous 1846 Hudson river side wheeler "Thomas Powell" had a Cylinder diameter of 48 inches, and stroke of 11 feet !
"Tom Powell" or "swan of the Hudson", as she was then called, was believed to be, back in 1846 (!)
the fastest steamboat in the world! She could easily sail up or down the river at 22.5mph! (35.5km/h or 19.5 knots!)
.
Please note : As a "one-off" , parts or plans for this paddle wheeler and it's engine are not for sale!
Thanks for watching!
Peter
Music : Henry Tucker (1826-1882)

Incredible work! It's amazing to see her afloat after all the time and effort you put into making the model. I especially liked the detail of using the period-appropriate US flag!

Beautiful job on this boat. I've seen a lot of Steamboats out on Spreckels Lake in San Francisco but nothing that quite measures up to this. If you do another video on it, let's see some more of the mechanics at work. And maybe a description of the engine and a close-up of the mechanism operating the paddles. Great job

Thank you! I came many years ago (1994) to see Ferry "Eureka"...but not a single model sailing on Spreckels Lake... Every video I make has a short description. You can see it's engine here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AdmrYsE3U6o.html Thanks for watching!

Breathtaking! This says an old german steamboat modeller! I know the difficultis of this models with big superstructure - one must avoide toplast. I made the "Mt. Washington" with walking beam engine and boiler in the middle of the hull, but I had to extend the height of the hull. it seems, that your excellent casco has the original scale height of the hull?
@LiveSteamPaddleWheelersPG
@LiveSteamPaddleWheelersPG 2 года назад
Thank you for your interest and comments! Of course, as usual, I adapted draft and shape below waterline to fit my needs (all my metal models are heavier than should be at scale. I hope you will show us a video of your Mt-Washington!

@@LiveSteamPaddleWheelersPG Thanks for your response! I’ve always been a fan of these lake steamers. Disney built two of them for the Florida park, since scrapped. I’m sure you’re familiar with the Ticonderoga in Vermont. Amazing story there. Thanks for sharing your hard work!

@@LiveSteamPaddleWheelersPG Indeed I do know about the Eureka! I went about that’s ferry in the mid 60s. It was retired and part of a maritime museum. It was fascinating to see the engine and paddle wheels. It would be amazing if it could be restored and operated for occasional trips on the bay. Very interesting subject!

What is the song at the beginning called?
@LiveSteamPaddleWheelersPG
@LiveSteamPaddleWheelersPG Год назад
That's a Hudson River steamboat song! (I love it!) It's name is "Francis Skiddy Polka", and was composed for the Captain of that boat, which appeared on the river in 1852! I'm currently "scratch building" a much earlier model, the steamboat "North America", as she first appeared on the Hudson River, back in 1839... nevertheless, I picked the song again for "part one"!
