I push my mind and body to its limit with only a few months of training and a goal to paddle across the state of Missouri in the MR340 (Missouri River 340) on a Stand-Up Paddle Board.

Amazing job I’m trying to do a race on a Sup here in Texas. The Texas water safari, it’s 260 miles in $100 from San Marcos Texas to see drift on the coast. I’m having a very difficult time getting the right board. I just had a custom board made but I’m afraid it’s too delicate. Congratulations again!
@MichaelCarson1
@MichaelCarson1 2 года назад
Thanks! I'm also interested in going TWS. Not sure if it will happen this year but would def. be using an inflatable. What kind of custom board did you have made? Also, do you know how many people have done it on a SUP in the past? I can't find a lot of information.

wow, awesome documentary. I really enjoyed every minute of it. thanks for putting in the work and chapeau for your incredible race. you mentioned there will be changes - what were you learnings regarding your equipment? would you go wider or narrower? any more or less devices to help navigating?
@MichaelCarson1
@MichaelCarson1 2 года назад
Thanks, that is super nice of you! Appreciate you watching. I should probably make a video about that but since the race, I've got an unlimited board which I would use for any long race. More speed and efficiency and less effort at a higher pace. For navigation, in relation to gear, probably a Garmin Fenix watch. Longer enough battery life to last the whole event and built-in maps on the watch.

Did you say 2 months paddle training and then did this MR340?? Madness. Beautiful madness. Congrats on pushing through to the finish! You've discovered the stoke for sure. :) May I warn you NOT to look at events going around Europe. Few ultras here with nice scenic views to boot. I've done the 11 Cities in Holland couple of times, Great Glen in Scotland, Dordogne Intégrale in France and now with travel restriction easing off, the hunt for next long water slog is back. It's a different kind of high from running isn't it. And man you definitely got a good choice of gears with that beautiful SIC RS, Flow X and that shorter Zre. Bravo Bravo Bravo Hero! Hope to see you on the water somewhere.
@MichaelCarson1
@MichaelCarson1 2 года назад
Hey SUPMission - thanks for the comment! I think it's too late for the events research :) Yeah, I tried to make the best gear choices I could. Always learning, though! Hope to see you on the water as well!
@supmission
@supmission 2 года назад
@@MichaelCarson1 With your body mass I think you could have gone even faster with the 23 or 21.5 RS board.. But you're right on paddle technique. It is crucial especially for ultras. A clean catch with full blade is key especially when you're tired.
@MichaelCarson1
@MichaelCarson1 2 года назад
@@supmission Funny you mention that! You're 100% correct but I'm glad I started on the 24.5 because of my lack of SUP experience. It was challenging for me at first but I adapted pretty quickly to it in my conditions. I'm glad I started there and not with anything more narrow, truthfully. I actually have an RS 21.5 at the paddle shop that just came in that I'm going to pick up. Super excited about it! I also kind of went all in on a custom King's Unlimited 18x23 that I just got back from picking up. I've been on it a couple times now. Wow, what an experience! Both boards kind of happened at the same time, wasn't expecting that. I think 14x21.5 and 18x23 will be a great combo! I plan on doing some videos about the whole journey.
@supmission
@supmission 2 года назад
@@MichaelCarson1 Congratulations with those 2 great choices! Ya definitely on a right track. Try Komoot or Map.me to assist with navigation next adventure. In some watches you can actually program turn by turn alerts when syncd with routes planned. Beats going in circles in the next foggy day. :) So excited for you. We’re all #boundbywater buddy.
@MichaelCarson1
@MichaelCarson1 2 года назад
@@supmission Thanks! Much appreciated. I think the main reason I was getting turned around was due to fiddling with camera gear. Thanks for the map suggestions. I think my plan is to get an Garmin Fenix that has the built in maps on the watch but I'll see. I appreciate your support and suggestions!

Michael, great video! I'm looking to SUP the MR340 next year and in the market for a new board. I see in the comments that there were few other SIC's out there, do you have any feedback or recommendations as I start my search for a new board?
@MichaelCarson1
@MichaelCarson1 2 года назад
Hey Jeremy, that's great! I think the board choice really depends on where you are skill-wise. You can really do it on just about anything. I'd try to focus on the mental aspect, being adaptable in the face of challenges, having solutions in place before the problem arises, nutrition (key). A flatwater board will do fine or even an inflatable as a lot of people use them. The more narrow you go, the more difficult it becomes. Most people use 26" and up as well as a cooler or box/egg crate of some type for sitting. So many things! I need to do a video on it.
@jeremystanton3763
@jeremystanton3763 2 года назад
@@MichaelCarson1 Michael thank you for the reply! I haven’t pulled the trigger on my new board yet, considering the inflatable sic rs 14x26 or the inflatable bullet 14x28…but I did pull the trigger and signed up for the MR340!
@MichaelCarson1
@MichaelCarson1 2 года назад
@@jeremystanton3763 Congrats! My recommendation would be the RS Airglide 28" for an inflatable by SIC. I would go at least 28" if it's inflatable.

@@MichaelCarson1 hey great video man. I’m in the same boat as you also a runner and picked up stand up paddle boarding. I have a sic rs as well I’m wondering how did you rig the bungee on the nose of your board? I see that you use nsi tie downs at the back what about the front? Is it Surf Co. EZ-PLUG Deck Rigging Kit with super glue?
@MichaelCarson1
@MichaelCarson1 9 месяцев назад
@@danneh8777 Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! Correct, I used the NSI soft ones on the back on the Surf Co on the front with the glue they provided. It worked well enough. I think you could use the NSI on the front without any issues. Maybe one day boards will have internal attachments so we don't have to do this kind of stuff. Happy paddling!

The blade should be angled forward. Then when you’re at the end of your stroke, the blade is at or closer to vertical and won’t destabilize you when pulling out the paddle.

Great video! I have to wonder about that course though--340 miles? Goofy. Irresponsible. What does a 340-mile course decide that a 100-mile course can't determine? The current obsession with ultra-distance events is weird. Exercise is supposed to be beneficial, not self-destructive. Sorry for the rant. I don't want to diminish you accomplishment--truly impressive! I'm a bike racer and kayak paddler; you've got me thinking about trying SUP. Thanks!
