my dad recently told me the events that inspired this song and it was the most beautiful story. it really shows how much they loved each other that they married on his death bed and that Grace never remarried. she was a widow the rest of her life. so sad, but beautiful
It was so agonising for Grace Gifford, I stood in Kilmainham Jail when on holiday in Dublin and it was so moving, I was also able to place flowers on The Plunkett grave at Glasnevin. Paddy Reilly is so gifted that he makes a song live and speak to all who listen !
A wonderful song, sung by our own Paddy Reilly. To visit Kilmainham is to be transported back in time to a lonely but heroic place. Heaven United them in time
Every time I hear Paddy sing this I feel like I am there. What a terrible beauty of a song. His voice is incomparable. I have researched Kilmainen and wuld like to visit there before they find a reason to tear it down.
Everytime I hear him sing this song, I can see it as if it were happening right in front of me. Only Padd has that affect. hat a wonderful musician he is.
There is no reason to hate the Brits in order to love this wonderful song! My beloved wife... the Mother of our 3 fine Sons... is a proud "Brit" and I wil love her to the end of my days!
Thats the reason why brexit and division will lead to what??? we live intermingled now...who bombs who or where?? They live amongst us and we live amongst them..good and bad in all divides, Respect all
One of the most moving folk/love songs I have ever heard. Very emotional, and a great example of the horrible happenings of war.... Very sad. Grace was also a remarkable woman.
Grace hurried into Dublin to buy an expensive wedding ring, then they got married the evening before his execution, they had 2 prison guards as witnesses and twenty soldiers, bayonets drawn for the ceremony.
I am hoping that someday I will be able to make the trip to Kilmainen. I am waiting on back procedure. I am 74 and my back is a mess. If I never make it, I still feel as though I was there. Of course the real thing woul be so much better, I live in the middle of the U.S. I used to have a downloaded picture taken by a tourist of Kilmainent's interior befre my computer crashed. .
+Dylan Lewis I am SO glad I read your comment. Jim McCann's singing on this is astounding. I can't stop playing it over and over. And it has caused me to look up a bit of history about the Rising etc. Very tragic time. Thanks from Montana :)
