🤿 What is Open Water Diving (OWD)?
PADI Open Water Diver is the first scuba certification level. A highly-trained PADI Instructor will teach you how to scuba dive in a relaxed, supportive learning environment.
Upon completion, you can dive to a maximum of 18m/60ft depth.
✅ Requirements for the Course
- Minimum 10 years of age
- Able to swim 200m or snorkel 300m
- Able to float for 10 minutes
- Medically fit for diving
💰 How Much Does It Cost?
The cost depends on the country and the scuba diving center that you choose. Generally, the OWD course can cost you anywhere between 20,000 - 30,000 INR.
🤿 What Does the Course Include?
The course is divided into four parts:
- Theory
The theory involves watching 5 videos that will take you through the process and the scuba equipment. There will be Knowledge Review questions that you will need to answer after every video.
This can take close to 5-6 hours, depending on how quickly you complete the videos.
- Confined Dives
Next is practicing in a confined environment which could be a swimming pool or a lake/pond. You will practice all the skills that you saw in the videos and it can take a day or two for you to complete them all.
- Open Water Dives
Finally, you will go on 4 Open Water dives in which you will be practicing the skills that you did in the pool. You will need to complete them all to be OWD certified.
- Final Exam
Last, but not least, there is a final theory exam in which you will need to answer MCQs. You are given around 1-1.5 hours to complete the 40 questions.
A minimum score of 75% is required to be certified. If you fail, you can take the exam again.
📍 Where Should You Do It From?
Depending on your budget, you can do it from several locations all over the world.
Personally, I felt the courses to be quite expensive in India which is why I decided to do it in Thailand where I could explore around a bit too.
So, you can decide on the location depending on your budget and time constraints.
If you can, then opt to learn from someplace like Thailand, Indonesia, Maldives, etc.
➡️ My Experience
Honestly, I loved being underwater for the first time ever when I went diving which is why I had always planned to do this course.
If you choose a good scuba diving center and location, it will be one of the most amazing feelings in the world. You might feel a little anxious at the start but that's completely normal.
This comes from the girl who never went swimming in the ocean to having completed 20+ dives in just a couple of weeks. 🤭
