Sucharita does understand the sacrifice of padmini. What she says is - " this is not a story anybody should be proud of. There is nothing here to glorify . This is something, we as human beings should be ashamed of. Thr plight of women and children throughout the history. Even today, in the name of some false pride they attack school buses and threaten an actress about chopping off her nose. Who is paying the price? At the end of the movie Padmaavat, I didn't feel proud of anything. I felt low and everything just seemed so cruel. A bunch of guys want to protect Padmavati. Another guy wants to capture her. What is she? A human being or some "naayab" lifeless stone?
@jaymax9560

This movie shows that, mans desire if given the means has no bounds. Khilji wanted her because he was told she was "nayab" and he had the means to easily beat Mewar. What do you give someone who has everything? A fantasy that is within his reach.

I see your point and sucharita's also. But i think most people missed the moral of the story. The reason why rajputs glorified this story through out ages. It wasn't the jauhar they were proud of it was the lesson learnt. Khillji used unfair means, cheated in battle to win (padmavati) and he lost spectacularly inspite of winning the war. He wanted to be remembered in history but no one remembers him they think of Padmavati and gora and badal characters. While rajputs fought honorably...obeyed the rules of battle (sometimes stupidly for our generation) but even when they lost they are remembered for their honor. lesson: Battles won with honor is more memorable and of value to us than cheating. Haar ke jitne wale ko baazigar khete hai thats what the story was about. about treating women like property that was the fault of the times back then can't really fault SLB for that.
@ankitnautiyal2568
@ankitnautiyal2568 5 лет назад
@@iamsnehanair to add in the list of lessons: hollow ego based on clans prevents us from uniting with each other against an invader, which causes our downfall. There were hundred of Rajput kingdoms, only if they were not filled with ego, and hatred towards each other, they could have joined hands to never let an outsider invade and force such a condition that the women of the country had to jauhar. But we did not learn that lesson, and yet again Britishers invaded. Not sure if we have learnt it yet.

Jauhar was committed to save themselves from the brutality of the invaders. As we all know the ladies that remained in the fort after the war were usually used as sex slaves. So rajputs preferred to die with their head held high than become captives. According to local folklore,Khilji couldn't enter the chittorgarh fort so he stopped all the supplies to it. When the soldiers inside were completely devoid of food the opened the gates of the fort and just attacked on the army.Reason being the same,they could accept death during fighting rather than life as a prisoner.This was also the time when the last standing soldiers were giving up their lives on the battlefield the women committed jauhar,leaving behind just a dead fort. Jauhar was not a glorious practice but it was a better option available to them.

Exactly juahar was a crude practice but it was performed only when there was no way out. In the case of queen padmini, she did juahar with other 14000 women of Mewar because for them the horror of life of rape and dishonour was bigger than the horror of death. And anyone with self-respect would try avoid dishonour in the best way possible. So we should proud of our past and people like queen padmini who held her head high and accepted death over life of torture

the fact that history glorifies this mass suicide which was a result of oppression is quite indicative of where our society is headed.The problem with this glorification lays not in the actual historical context of it (although the practice of such a Ritual in of itself is pretty problematic) but in the implications of it. If women cannot protect her 'honour' she should just die. Because what else is there to a woman's life than her perceived honour. The honour that transcends herself and becomes the matter of the nation, reducing her down to an object, a hollow vessel to parade your 'honor' in.

exactly, the glorification and the implication that women should die with honor should be questioned. but in the story whether it's fictional or real they did out of their choice because they didn't wanted to be sex slaves. It should be perceived that way. like when azad killed himself at alfred park

Chandra Shekhar Azad also shot himself because he didn't want to be touched by the british atleast while he was alive. You are criticising rajputs for for killing themselves rather than being touched by evil enemy but what would you call Azad,who comes from your own ideology of socialism. I think you should say that you dont understand this thing rather than saying that it was wrong and not to be glorified. And where are you when so many gansgsters,terrorists and criminals like Dawood are glorified in movies. Recent example is 'Raees' where a criminal was glorified but i guess you you must not have noticed it. Right?
@jareenf483

Oh! So now you want to justify a movie's 99% which seeks to clearly/directly glorify a criminal. And you want to justify it using the dishonest 1% of the movie which seeks to glorify the criminal indirectly if not directly.
@jareenf483
@jareenf483 6 лет назад
Kartik Bhatia how did they indirectly glorify it? can you please elaborate? Cause you can't make claims without any supporting arguments that prove your point. The movie quite literally shows the "rise and fall" of a criminal, it's a story about the criminal, just like things like breaking bad or the god father Are, they are not "glorifying" meth or mafia, they are just telling a grim story. Not all films/novels/plays are going to be about happy to go lucky things. Your comments more direct than Indirectly suggest you have a very strong dislike for Muslims( though you "carefully" tried to hide )therefore you have issues with history that involves Muslims in it banned, or only bring up movies that have a Muslim guy staring in it. I agree that correct history should be taught, the people who looted the country should be written in the history books as looters, however you can group the people of an entire religion as looters. Good and bad people are in every religion/caste/country etc. Also please don't come at me with "defending Muslim" bullshit, as an agnostic I point out when Muslims are putting down other religions too.
@kartikbhatia8176
@kartikbhatia8176 6 лет назад
Jareen Fahmi When you portray him as a Robin Hood in 99% of the movie and you portray the whole system including the security forces as corrupt, then killing him in the last 1% of the movie only accounts to giving the impression of him being,as if a martyr. I havent seen Breaking Bad but I have seen Godfather. And Raees can not be compared with it in this regard for the simple fact that character of Al Pacino in godfather was not glorified and it was a grey character. And you are wrong when you say that Raees depicted rise and fall of a criminal. No it didnt. It only portrayed him as a Robin Hood+Superman all through out the movie. And i hope you agree with me atleast at this,that 99% of movie was glorifying him. If you dont then I cant help your thought and there is no point arguing over it. I dont need to say anything indirectly. I am pretty clear. What I hate is the 'arabisation' of Islam. If you haven't grown brains to understand what i mean,then keep your allegations to yourself. Coming to history, I dont want history of Islamic period of india to be banned. I rather want it to be correctly told to everyone like they do in the Gurudwaras,without being called Islamophobic. The reason for that: Sikhs are a minority and hence to be appeased by your polticians. I just want the history books to call barbarians as barbarians and foreign invaders as foreign invaders because thats what they actually were. Muslims should also stop relating themselves with those people. And I dont care if you are an agnostic or a monk or a wahhabi,if you dont want people to throw allegations at you, first stop being a hypocrite and learn to avoid the practice yourself.

@harshitamadaan3878
@harshitamadaan3878 3 года назад
@@deveshsingh752 it did happen in the movie too, shahid's character was aware that if they lost they would commit johar. And even if it isn't explicitly shown in the movie, the point remains same, that such a practice shouldn't be glorified that has such patriarchal roots that treat women as an 'object' that should rather burn than 'be given' to anyone else.
@deveshsingh752
@deveshsingh752 3 года назад
@@harshitamadaan3878 I get your point that women were treated as object and I felt bad about the reality through which these Women went through. The thing is we can be ashamed of our history but how can we forget about the 'context'. What if the Johar was not committed by rani Padmavati, then everything be good for her. She chose to do that because she don't want herself to be enslaved by Alauddin Khilji. Some people says that she sacrificed herself to protect Rajput's culture. And we should not forget that this movie is based around 12th to 13th century - where patriarchy were on its peak.

I am not suppose to write this on a movie review page but I couldn't resist so here it is. There is a huge difference between Johar and Sati. While sati was malpractice of burning a women whose husband has died Johar is very far from this. Johar was committed by all the women of the kingdom when the king lost a war and the kingdom was about to be captured by an invader. Now why did they do so ? from the past it can be seen that whenever any Muslim invader invaded India they focused on three things Loot, Rape, and conversion. The women of the kingdom were taken as sex slaves and were raped time after time. Sometime passed into Hierarchy and from one man to another. Now One can only think of what those women would have suffered on hands of those sex deprived lusty men. The situation was some what similar to present day sex slaves of ISIS. To prevent themselves from the suffering the women choose to die by jumping into fire pits and save there honor. So next time you joke about Johar please keep this in mind. I am an atheist and not a Rajput by cast just a person who reads history other than text books.

Those women are still worshipped in our community. And yeah, I'm a proud Rajput. Jai Hind.

Totally agree that shahid s acting was much better , believable and understated compared to ranveer. To bring believability to a cardboard character is tough. Loved him in Rangoon. So much angst! :) I find deepika overdoing this slightly tearing stretching her neck kindof thing in most scenes in all movies. She was good in tamasha but in bhansali movies she mostly an excessively fair clothes horse. I love how bhansali upholds Indian culture and values but sometimes what would be truly brave and artistic is to question existing stereotypes of fair beautiful goodness vs dark and brutal badness. I know he's obsessed with beauty but is only external notions of beauty worth obsessing over ? What about the mind. What about pure emotion without visual gimmicks?

love this comment! Bhansali needs to show the darker sides and the consequences therein....else his sets look like a facade. I loved his Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam days but his history biopics are weak.

Read the plot of Jayasi's Padmavat on wikipedia and found it way better and unbiased than the "21st century" version. Quite progressive, even.

Firstly, Padmaavat is based on a poem. It doesn't glorify Jauhar. It shows what is written. The women at that time felt that inspite of being abused & made slaves, it was more respectful to end life. Jauhar must have been religiously accepted for them. Though many will think that like Rani Laxmi Bai Padmavati & other women should have fought with the army. All have different opinions. Secondly, many evil practices like child marriage, dowry, not allowing widow to remarry still are found in Rural India. People must think about that instead of criticizing a movie.

Bro, thanks for saying exactly how i felt about the glorification of jauhar..like you said its one thing to tell the story that something like this happened, here you are saying that this is the best thing to happen in the war...its absurd.

Sucharita, honestly your review was more immersive for me than the film : ) What a waste of resources. Everything grand in the film except the story. At interval I was like there is more to go, huh. And yes, Shahid Kapoor was better than Ranveer in every scene, he had the presence, the subtlety and the one scene where he yelled on Ranveer (when he asks to see Queen Padmavati) showed his intensity which was more convincing than Ranveer, for me.

So why is it so hard for Indians to understand the "hurt feelings" of the Rajputs? Padaamavat is a poem and therefore fiction. The siege of Chittor and the jauhar is not. It is probably the biggest tragedy in Rajput history. Why is that hard to understand? Surely you don't need a Pakistani to explain this.

Lovely review. I have watched the movie and I didn't get any hint of Jauhar being glorified in the movie. Rather strength of Rajput women was glorified and emphasised on. It will take strength to jump into fire right (burn to death rather than being enslaved and lose dignity, considering that was thought to the correct option at that time). That requires a lot of strength. No human of today's age can do that (not that they should do). But the strength of doing such a thing existed in our history for real in a community is glorified, not the practice. That's it. P.S. I am not karni Sena supporter, Rajput, or a "so called" bhakt. (Have to add this, it has become scary to talk about all this in today's time) Believe me 😥

Basically jouhar is glorification of suicide. I didn’t see strength or courage, I saw a sad lack of choices that those women had. It’s terrible and there is something seriously wrong with people who don’t see anything disturbing about it.

I’m so confused on why many women are so adamant on the idea that jauhar was shameful act that was carried out in India. The women were brave enough to choose death over rape, over being treated like a slave, over being reduced to mere objects to be played with. Sanjay Leela Bhansali has glorified this bravery. The character of Padmavati has only inspired me to be a stronger woman. Despite all this negative advertising that jauhar should not be glorified, we should focus on the bravery and courage of the women that carried out jauhar. Not belittle them and portray them to be weak.

Honestly speaking, for me, the padmavat...is just a regular masala Bollywood movie... A hero..a heroine...and a third angle... Somewhat of what we have seen in hum Dil de chuke Saman, devdas, ram Leela. Bajirao....n what else... I don't remember... It is the same story plot...with different costumes, make up, jewellery, sets and of course different climax and ending... ! PS: please don't call me slut or Randi or any bad words for I have shared my views! It's a humble request.

I think you misunderstood this . You said that it's not a glory in the story . But let me tell you sati pratha or as here Johar was done only to save women's atmasamman from Mughals or another Muslim rulers . Rani Padmavati showed a lot of courage along with her rajput maidens etc . Is it not glorifying that how fearless Indian women were

However, this time around, I felt like your review gave away the story and told me something I didn't want to know at least till I'd watched the film. For me, the movie did not work solely because of Shahid and his chemistry with Deepika. Though it's the writing that needs to be blamed, Shahid could have added his 'touch' to the character. I sort of knew that he wouldn't look like a warrior, but he could have compensated that with his acting, but he failed there too, quite miserably. Every time he & Deepika stared at each other, I yawned and hoped Khilji interrupted them, just to keep me engaged till the end. This movie belongs to Ranveer & Jim Sarbh. The last 30 minutes, though shot realistically, was too uncomfortable to watch. The glorification was quite disturbing, probably because our side of the world has evolved so much since then.
