How many of the six counties would vote to remain in the United Kingdom today ? Antrim for sure. Perhaps Co. Down. No worries . Fundamentalist Protestant Rule will never be overturned on this island.

Identity is an emotion. Irish people want to be Irish. It's easy for a southside Dubliner to be diffident about ending partition. There is consistent support for ending partition. There is no support for being more British in Ireland. Duh. The people who want a United Ireland have no intention of kissing Unionist feet.

The statistics show a growing Northern Irish identity (31.5% in the 2021 Census.) As Northern Irish society becomes rapidly secular (as it has in the Republic), this identity will only grow in numbers. Even if this happens, there will still be those who see themselves as either solely Irish or solely British. Logic would dictate that the only way to have an acceptable system of governance for all three of these groups would be to have an independent Northern Ireland. There are already six countries in the EU with similar or smaller populations to the six counties. If the population of the North knew they could not remain part of Britain, nor would they ever be part of the Republic, and because of secularism religious differences are becoming an irrelevance, this would only strengthen a common Northern Irish identity. To settle for only the two options only alienates one or other of the polarized groups. Power sharing in the past hasn't worked for two reasons: there has never before been such support for a secular Northern Irish identity and both Sinn Fein and the DUP have been told they have to fight it out for only one of two choices. Neither side has been given any middle ground, and a win for one is a total loss for the other. The Republic has no real claim over the six counties. They have been separate entities for over 100 years. (Ukraine has only been independent from Soviet Russia for less than a third of that time, and no one questions their right to remain a separate nation.) Mainland Britain is not interested in Northern Ireland. (Except for the Tory party if they're desperate for seats when they have a slim majority.) Unity in Northern Ireland will only be achieved if the two equally repugnant and polarizing outcomes are removed from the negotiating table.

The favoured 'solution' of many Loyalists whose primary loyalty is to partition rather than being actually British. Why would Irish people have anything whatsoever to do with this tripe? If we must have partition at least the UK is able to support NI in many ways. Independence is just the least useful of the options available.

@@niallodonnell7827 I don't have a dog in this fight. I'm not Irish, British or Northern Irish. What I see is a "country" where 50% of the population don't want to absorbed into another country. The Republic has as much right to take over the six counties as Russia has to take over Ukraine. By insisting that all of the island must be united you confirm that you are: A/ a bigot, B/ a hypocrite, C/ from the Republic, D/ all of the above. Listen to what Padriag O'Malley himself says (8:30 through until 10:30): there is NO credible support for reunification. Stop peddling your own bigoted agenda.

@@timtowers7997 Well I certainly don't accept your laughable attempt to portray yourself as neutral however you do appear to have the simplified analysis of the moderately informed outsider. The only party that resembles Russia in this situation is the UK. Ireland won't be absorbing anything unless there is a 50%+1 vote for it and the longer it takes to bring about a Border Poll the more likely it will be a lot more than that. Wake up and smell the coffee instead of burning tricolours. Your time is running out.

Wonderful to hear a man speak who wants to be, not swayed, but understood and is understandable. There's so much political kneejerk blather. What a relief!

I do agree with this. + Im not negative. Im an all 100% for a United an Ireland. But a lot does need to be done yet. And many journeys + conversations yet to happen. And I would be all for the following:- - A United Ireland in the Commonwealth (Look at the Commonwealth Games for one. It is not unusual for Nationalists to take part. I aspire to a United Ireland team in the Commonwealth Games) - A new flag (Ireland has had many flags over the centuries) - A new anthem (Amhran na bhFiann is not that good old + we have a much older musical tradition)

The Commonwealth is old hat, reminiscent of Empire and leaves many Unionists unimpressed along with Irish people. I suggest a new formal entity called the British Isles with two independent countries which share a lot of symbolic connections including a British Isles flag . That entity could be part of the Commonwealth rather than Ireland on its own -providing something of a prophylactic to reluctant Irish people but providing the benefits of membership that you describe. All of this British stuff has a sell by date though. If unity is delayed another thirty years the hugely diminished position of Unionism will likely be reflected in the nature of the settlement.

There is zero hope of Nationalist Ireland entertaining that idea.

@@bernardmolloy6241 In fairness I don't think any of us know what we'd wear until it's put to us in negotiations or in attempting to win a Border Poll in the north. On the face of it Irish people in the south expect to keep the flag and anthem which might suggest that negotiations are pointless if you were to take that serious. The alternative is to wait decades until there's an overwhelming Nationalist majority in the north and out vote the declining Unionists that way. NI will be 130 years old by then. It feels too late already.

I know exactly what Irish people throughout the entire island want. The reason I know that is I am one of those people. The problem now is not Northern Ireland. The problem lies now in the 26 counties where there is a new reimagined woke Irishnesses with a partitionist mindset.

@@bernardmolloy6241 Well look if the south is the problem then there's no chance but I think that the south is persuadable especially if the British concessions are kept to a lesser scale but is the north going to agree in that case? Not for decades.
