It is a self-confident work. The following is an explanation.
Capriccio No. 24, composed by Niccolò Paganini, the greatest genius in violin history, even called devilish, has been loved by many for a long time due to its tremendous skill and beautiful melody.
And great composers have left a huge number of variations on this song.
In recent years, this "Paganini Variations" has been made by leading composer pianists with originality and transcendental skills such as Fazil Say and Marc-Andre Amran, as well as Liszt, Brahms and Rachmaninoff.
Creating a variation based on this subject can be said to be a touchstone for musicians.
Things started in the spring of 2021. I had the opportunity to perform a solo recital at Japan's world-class hall of fame, "Suntory Hall," and started with the idea of "what to challenge without trying on this stage."
Therefore, I decided to challenge Ryota Kikuchi to compose the "Paganini Variations" that has been handed down since the 19th century in order to test my playing technique and creativity.
I think that it was a variation that I could make because I lived in 2021 and was able to absorb the music of various times.
Please enjoy with the tension of one-shot game on the big stage.
Music commentary
Subject: After a short and vivid prelude, Paganini's Capriccio No. 24 melody is played. Simple yet modern chords add glamor.
Variation 1: A technical variation consisting of chord tremolos and fine passages.
Second Variation: A dynamic variation with a modified theme played with the left hand and a decorative passage with the right hand.
Variation 3: A perpetuum mobile with fast 16th note passages.
Variation 4: A very technical variation, recently filled with complex passages with contemporary musical elements.
Variation 5: Has an impressionist sense of harmony. A playful variation (?) In which the theme is intertwined with "that song" from the agreement of the chord progression from the second half.
Variation 6: Also fusion-like or Kapustin-like. Variations featuring chromatic accompaniment and bebop-like passages.
Variation 7: A variation that expresses the image of a demonic dance with a Latin taste. Increased enthusiasm and continued to the final variation.
Variation 8: The final variation of a transcendental technique with a mix of intersecting chords, octaves, and double stops glissando. Make full use of the sound of the piano to the limit and create an overwhelming climax.
