In the nohkalikai falls story the finger was not actually found this way but rather it was kept in a beetlenut basket northeast people eat beetlenut or supari after every meal so while she went to grab it she found the finger in that basket rest of the story is correct. (I am from northeast)

I know one reason which happened with us , like years ago this forest region are distributed between different tribals in ancient times thus they also work-ships different deities and gods which you wont see in any regional book because most of tribals are extinct now , but those deities still follows their tribals mantras of protecting that particular region but now as globalisation and traveler go hiking to those unknown regions and that deities see them as danger so they try to warn them like making them confuse and lost in trails . Even if you leave they try to play with your brain as hallucinating things and defend it with your inner fear. And the last stage is death or soul taken . The only way out is to perform the particular rituals according to that particular deities. They are not demons they dont kill without reason . But that rituals are only performed by that tribe member not even noraml pandit / brahmin can work in it. So avoid going to unknow trails and trekking without having proper knowledge, south asian regions are full of it .
