well as a regular biker,, idk 13 mph sounds fast for a foot run speed or even a pedal bike speed. so what i do on my traditional bike is to drop my foot on the ground cuz i DONT turn my steering wheel but do banking turns. (its a habit i learned from crashing as a pre teen) not sure if that translate well for e bikes.... but the thing i say that is cuz over 10 mph and turning is a bit of a risk... also another flag is this is a NEW BIKE so getting used to the dynamics of e bikes is a learning curve... idk im still doing e bike research cuz I wanna widen my range for my drone since some places arent close to places I can park my car... I do use my pedal bike from time to time... but I got "the itch" for a new bike.

Just wiped out last week. Thank God for my safety gear, because it could've been worse. My leather jacket got a hole in it that was quickly stitched up, and minor damage to the bike. What happened: Turned off the main road and Hit very dusty, dry, slippery gravel and immediately made another turn. I completely lost grip on the path, and went down just like you did, except I Landed on my elbow, and managed to tear my rotory cuff. At least I avoided the road rash and a concussion because of my jacket, gloves and helmet.

Fighting to get back on the asphalt may not be the best response if there is a drop from one surface to the other, it will catch your wheel. Sometimes it’s better to stay off the path, slow down, get your balance, then get back on the path in a controlled manner.

That's a wise suggestion across a variety of different types of vehicles. Take a look at the belts on the engine of your car and the design of the pulley around which they wrap. The key point to remember here is that rubber always tends to "ride to the high side." Which means, if the belt did not sit in a valley on the pulley, either a v-shape, or pulley with a design that maintains the rubber in it's designed place, it (the rubber belt) will ride up and off the pulley. Primarily, that's why when you tow a trailer, the trailer has a tendency to sway back and forth, up one side of the valley and over the the opposite side on a well used rutted roadway or one with a 'soft' surface. In severe cases, the sway becomes so pronounced the trailer may cause you to lose control of the towing vehicle. How that applies here is that the tire, once it gains traction on a stable surface, will suddenly veer (or seemingly 'jerk') to the stable surface (or 'high' side). As Mike Morgan says, slow down, gain control of a slower moving vehicle (your bike), and then, keeping in mind there may be a slight jerk to the steering, you're far more prepared to deal with that seeming instability.

Wish I saw this video a year ago. Same scenario, entering a turn too quickly. We all know this is bad but need reminders. Riding, like any activity requiring speed, demands full attention. Ebikes are great, but people may need training.

What you need is experience and understanding of the underlying physics - with or without training. I learned to ride motorcycles when I shared a townhouse on Oahu. None of us had a car, but we had an old Suzuki TS 125 with no clutch cable. It was an adventure just making a burger run, but I got the hang of it. 2 months later I bought a shiny new 1980 GS1000. 6 months after that, I shipped the engine and tranny to Vance & Hines to massage a bit more power out of it. My zero to 140 times were slower than I wanted.

@robertsturey7096

In my opinion , yes you approached the turn too fast and slid out with the rear tire. But the pathway was also at fault and not safe because there was an overgrowth of bush branches for about 25 feet long on the right side which overlapped the pathway dangerously and stole about a foot or more of the driveway causing you to hug the left side and the turn right caught the rear wheel off the pavement in the wet mud . This caused the slide out and the bike lost balance in the turn. Why did they lay the path so close to the growing bushes ? Bushes that grow that big and long should be about 4 feet away from the pathway when are planted so that they don't encouch onto the pathway. Or they should be trimmed back at those spots but better is to properly design bushes away from the pathway for clearance. Glad you survived it as well as you did.

I hardly ever use the rear brake when turning (losing rear grip) and hardly accelerate hard while turning on a wet surface (high-side). You also shouldn't be using those tires when going off-road especially wet off-road. Also never brake too hard when leaning but I can't tell what your experience is. I've fallen a bunch of times growing up so I know how much to apply to not fall at all. From how you fell, it's unadvisable that you ride without doing what I've suggested and drilled it down a lot before going much faster.

I am in the process of adding 12V lighting to it, with brake, tail and turn signals with 12V horn as well, already looks a lot better with the lights attached and motorcycle mirrors added, I have a lot more visibility behind me with the mirrors I added, just waiting on a particular part for me to wire the lights in, but in the meantime, I've added the lights ready for when the part comes in. I've taken pics of the bike with the attachments, and with and it looks good. the combination tail light, brake light with turn signals and also added sequential turn signals, are all motorcycle quality, due to the speed of the bike, I need to have quality lights installed.

Again great video. Thank you for the great tips. I wish i was wearing proper clothing when i had my accident. I was doing a LAST MINUTE speed test when i decided to go up a driveway ramp into the a bike path but realize i was going to fast for even the brakes help me so my quick and DUMB thinking was…. Ok lift the front wheel (over the what seemed like a 10” curb) and let the back wheel follow. I knew it was gonna be messy but ill deal with it. BIG UNDERSTATEMENT 😮😞 when that back wheel hit the curb at 42mph it was like throwing a basketball at a curb… that back wheel ricocheted off that curb pushing me and my bike making a complete forward spin about 6’ off the ground. After the landing I couldn’t get up on my own and the outcome was a fractured radius in my elbow, two broken ribs, dislocated shoulder and two months OUT OF WORK. . Believe me at the moment all i was thinking when coming towards the ground was… “im gonna smash my pretty 🤩 face and probably not survive. Sold my three ebikes and still afraid ever since. please let me tell yall i have always been a smart and very safe rider till i made this wrong choice. I had my Ace X Demon (similar to the Ariel Rider Grizzly) here in Australia, and had a week before I had a major accident similar to you, literally came off the bike skidding along for 10 mtrs before the bike and me come to complete stop after hitting the gutter....was coming through the S bend making right hand turn coming out of the turn I had both motors engaged (dual motor) as I was coming up the hill from main road, and came off the bike after hitting a wet slippery patch of road, came off on the right hand side, twisting my ankle little, coupls scrapes (nothing serious) and few bruises...but the bike itself bent the crank, put the steering column out of alignment and the front wheel came off the worse with a big gouge taken out of the rim after impact with gutter, and also buckled the rim. Took it down to the workshop where I brought the bike, and they actually ordered the new wheel, but aligned everything back up again, new bolts in the rack but the crank is still slightly bent, (new one already ordered and ready to be put on).... I came of the bike due to 3 reasons: 1: riding at 35km/h up hill through the S bend 2: Mud tyres on bike instead of slick e moped style tyres, 3: not paying attention to the conditions of the road at the time Other than that was ok, slightly twisted ankle, few bruises and scrapes, was lucky to not been injured a lot more, but did have Motorcycle Approved helmet on, hi vis vest and wet weather gear, and gloves, had I not been wearing the wet weather gear at the time, it would likely been that I would have been taken to hospital, but managed to cycle to the Drs Appointment then head off to the bike workshop afterwards, but was told until the front wheel had been repaired to NOT engage the front hub motor, due to putting to much strain on the rim and buckling it even further, but was ok to ride with. Thank-you for the video....I have been riding ebikes a while, but made the rookie mistake on my new dual motor 750 watt ebike, dual motor combined max output 1500W and doing 35 km/h through an S bend after a light shower, but should have been taken more attention to the road conditions. Keep up the good work with your videos.

Mine was going at speed. taking a corner, down hill in traffic and the front basket which I hadn’t locked on falling off and getting trapped under the front wheel enabling gravity and momentum to have their wicked way with me. I had just bought a brand-new e-bike, my first one, and I was driving in a parking lane because the sidewalk was wet due to a few houses having sprinklers on. I was going to a gas station to buy some slushies for my friends, so I turned left, I didn't notice that since the parking lane was slanted downward slightly towards the drain, the slight dip that the turn had was covered in a puddle around an inch deep, my front wheel splashed onto the puddle, got the water in my eyes which I closed reactively and then I couldn't see for a split second where I panicked, over corrected, hit the curb, slammed the front brake and fell on my right side and my body fell on top of the handlebars, and they jabbed me in the stomach. Luckily, I was wearing a helmet, so my head was fine, but I didn't have gloves and was wearing normal clothes, so most of my right arm and hand was scraped and bleeding and my knee was basically an open wound. It's been about 5 days since that happened, and my stomach still feels incredibly sore. I ended bending the rim and getting a bad flat on my front tire and I scratched my brake lever. Luckily, I fell on the side opposite to my cassette so that was fine, and my pedal held up. Goes to show how bad crashes can happen if you stop paying attention for half a second. (I was going around 10 Mph)

This video really shows the importance of protection gear and awareness. I'm pretty sure you were well aware during the crash, but it was somewhat mostly out of your control and it happened pretty fast. Although your gear had some mild damage that would have really hurt if you didn't have the gear. @Healthy E-Rider I meant protection gear, like helmets, chest and back pads, etc, not the bike gear. When I saw you crash and rip a lot of leather from a 11mph fall I got a bit scared for how lightly I have been taking my safety for the past few months. I'm actually going to get new protection gear with what you recommended in your previous videos, for example arm protection gauntlet gloves with TPU knuckles, sliders and finger protection, pads, DOT certified helmet, etc. Maybe I misunderstood your question so I am also going to talk about bicycle gears. I ride a converted Scattante R350. It has a 24-speed Shimano drivetrain so It would be fairly easy to pedal if my battery were to die (I only ever use throttle on it). I have dual motors so I have a bit more oomph than regular converted ebikes, and also the bike is super light (around 22-24 pounds). I'm a fairly light person too, around 130, which lets me got to speeds around 28 mph. But in your case I don't think you would be able to use gears on a ebike, the torque and power from the bike alone is more than powerful to move it forward. Gears are oriented for pedal assist bikes like mine or for lower powered ebikes like the Super73 Z1. (sorry for such a long reply lol)

One other small point. Fat tires don’t do fast turns well. I made a hard left turn, looked to my right, and hit the curb. Bike fell over on top of me. Bruised but nothing broken. My body cushioned the fall for the bike. Haha. Fortunately I was going slow. Should have been paying more attention to where the bike was. Good vid. hey brother good advice for the most part but IMHO as a rider with tens of thousand of miles under my belt, you fell because you were careless and cough the edge of the pavement. Simplest thing would have been to counter and just ride off the path onto the grass. Had you not over corrected while between the 2 surfaces you would have been fine. I totally agree, e bike and board safety is way under valued until too late... even i was a victim of my own lazy stupidity. One day i went to get a bite to eat and decided i didn't need my wrist guards. a minor fall at less tha 10 mph later and i shattered my right wrist with perinate loss os feeling and use in 2nd to last finger. so not fun, had a foot of titanium pins in it for months... I would recommend a motorcycle safety class for e-bike beginners as much of the ride technique is the same.

My 4th ride on my new ebike. Before getting on the bike, I had it in low pedal assist. I didn't notice that the pedals were spinning as I pushed it into the street, before I mounted it, it started assisting. I should have let it go, and fixed anything that broke, but I tried to stop it, resulting in my falling to the street and scraping both knees. The bike went across the street and fell in the grass, didn't hurt it. So I've learned to get on the bike without pedal assist, and be more prepared for the unusual.. Luckily I was wearing a bike helmet, so I didn't crack my head open.

Motorbike riders know that in order to quickly increase lean to allow the bike to turn tighter, the only safe option is counter steer, that is to counterintuitively steer the bike to the left when you enter a right turn. That moves the bike out from under you, increases your lean angle, and, due to the steering geometry the bike itself will perform a much tighter turn, gravity and the front weels "trail" will do the steering for you. If they made training mandatory for e-bikes, everyone would know this. Breaking when you think you're taking a turn to wide will only result in you coming off again. There are many videos on countersteer, try it, it's your friend. Counterintuitive, it sure is, but it works like a magic trick.

Bike, before e-bikes, yes absolutely! Mine was caused by riding too small of a bike for my size. The gear shifters were pointed in towards my knees. And when I failed to successfully bunny hop over the curb, the front tire caught the curb and turned the handlebar into my knee, goring it down to the bone, and opening it up like a flower. Another recent incident was actually with an e-scooter from not riding any safety gear whatsoever. I lost control (unable to identify exact root cause), and ended up busting both top and bottom lips with multiple stitches, and breaking my right thumb nice and clean, no skin punctures. Full face helmet and gauntlet gloves would have saved me from ER and medical bills, probably going to end up totaling somewhere north of $10,000. And I'm out now waiting to heal back up. Before I even get back on a ride, I want to take the time to suit up with as much protective gear as I can get so that I can live to ride another day. It happens so quickly, that you usually don't have time to make the best decisions. Hindsight is great but doesn't help in the event itself. Another one I'll throw in just for fun is back to no safety gear, which was riding a skateboard in 1986 on uneven surfaces, and caught the lip of the sidewalk and tossed me off, breaking both bones in my left arm (FOOSH accident).

Not an e-bike, but I had a painful crash as a child, losing speed control on a hill in the rain. I was heading for a road, a very quiet road with good visibility, but I panicked and pulled harder on the brakes and slid across the road on my right leg. Completely shredded my jeans and had several light lacerations, it was a painful early lesson in maintaining adequate speed control from the start in the rain and to avoid large inputs when it is wet, I never recognized that I was aquaplaning, it is like hitting mud or ice, nothing you can do but hold steady until you regain grip!

When I woke up (not knowing where I was) , I noticed that my eyeglasses were gone. I landed 20+ feet from the curb. Thank GOD I was wearing a $350 motorcycle helmet at the time. I cracked the crown of the helmet as I landed on my head. (After any fall, in disgust I wisely replace any injured/damaged armor plates. Do NOT reuse them. This is expensive. But so is a $1,000 amulence ride and a $2,500 ER bill! Only GOD knows the cost of an acute and subacute rehabilitation unit after you’ve had spinal or orthopedic surgery. I was foggy for the next day but no other injuries (except for my pride!). What I did was incredible stupid. BTW, I was riding a pedal only trike. It didn’t even have a motor. Beware of upright trikes. Make your turns at speeds less than about 8 mph or much less. (Study your trike’s characteristics prophylactically ahead of cruising on it. You will be surprised how terribly they handle! and don’t even think of braking or pedaling into a turn Otherwise you will find out that that bike would rather track straight and then throw you. Please don’t be stupid. Don’t become street meet. I have seen numerous road burns down to the shaved bones. Admit our fragility. Unlike me you may not get a second chance. It is not if you will fall; but rather when you will fall. These e-bikes have no soul. They secretly want to kill you. Do not be afraid to drive. But dress for the worst possible fall. Do not become a statistic. A great web site is revzilla.com. Garb up like a motor cyclist. An accident at 28 mph could easily rend you quadriplegic. Call be a party pooper and a nerd. And while you are at it don’t operate a bandsaw fine you’ve had a drink or two. Like me, now at age 74: plan to live until your 120 years old. Read your Bibles. If I’ve offended anyone’s sensitivities, then I’ve done my job. Have fun. Be safe. To quote Dr Spock: “Live long and prosper”! May the LORD our G-D bless and keep you! PS. For goodness sake always ALWAYS light your bike up like a CHRISTmas tree. And wear reflective yellow or lime green clothing. Car drivers in the USaacare totally ignorant and blind to bikes and motorcycles. Do preventive defensive biking. And watch for the idiots that open their driver’s side doors like a Russian tank turret! Honor stop signs and don’t be a jerk. The like you save will be your own. Have I managed to cheese off everybody yet??? If so, good! Then I have done my job. But once again, what would I know. I was only an emergency room physician. Keep on trucking! And biking, but be safe. If you’ve been enjoying pit or alcohol. Put off your e-biking until you are clean and sober. Unlike driving a car, you probably won’t kill anybody but your self. Don’t make your significant other and kids sad. Been there, done that, bought the tee shirt! Happy trails. PPS. When my nephew was 14 he was an Olympic grade mountain bike freak. He took a spill headed on his head with positive loss of consciousness. He cracked his belt (having landed on his head. And he bent his $450 Leatt Orthopedist-designed cervical neck spine splint. After a few minutes he regained consciousness. By being a nerd today he is not a brain-damaged quadriplegic. Sorry to rain on your parade. But the sun comes out tomorrow and I’ll see you on the road mates!

Combination of speed, arrogance and just a general lack of awareness. In hindsight, label me "that guy". The guy who thinks he knows and still thinks he's 26 and not currently 56. I accept full responsibility of what happened but when thinking about all of the studying and learning done prior to upgrading my ebike, I have to say none of the curriculum I chose even mentioned the word safety with the exception of what it takes to keep the motor safe. So I did the upgrade without issue. Chose to install a Bafang middrive 750w motor on a GT mtn bike. Perfect and very clean install. Felt I was prepared and went....Amazing. Testing speed in turns I approach a left had turn too fast and can't tighten the turn. I go down and splat into the back of a parked vehicle at ~20mph. This resulted in a destroyed wheel and 4 broken ribs and a bruised kidney. Starting the 2nd week of a 4 to 6 week recovery. Safety Safety Safety. Learn from me. I will ride again but I sure didn't have to learn this way. I was wearing a helmet. Damn.
@Zomby_Woof
@Zomby_Woof 3 месяца назад
But why did you leave the paved path in the first place? Your speed seemed well within the capability of the bike. Kinda looked like your reach exceeded your grasp. I did that myself about a month ago. New ebike - trying to beat my previous speed through a curve. I had competing impulse in my brain. One said 'brake hard now' and the other said 'force the turn radius tighter - you have plenty of traction.' Either would have worked, but not being 100% sure of the bike, I froze and did neither. Landed on my side, cheap ass helmet with the broken strap went flying - but only after it slapped the ground - I guess my right side took the impact on a curb - cracked at least one rib. Then a week later, that bike was stolen. so now I'm shopping for a new one.

TFS your accident. I feel it's important for us to learn from each other. I had an accident about 2 weeks ago. Fortunately, it was right in front of the house. Unfortunately, it happened! The pavement here is dirt/gravel roads with some deep wash outs from rains. Yep, I hit that wash out, then was heading for a deeper ditch. So I opted to go down then instead of hitting the ditch for worse damages. My head hit first, I skidded on that rough surface, head first. I would have most definitely hurt my head badly if it weren't for the helmet. Even with the helmet, I managed to bruise my left brow bone. I could not turn my head for a few days.. Was very glad I had gloves on. That saved the pads of my left hand from getting torn open, although I had pain at my thumb pad for about a week. Bruised the side of my left knee, but the worst damage was to my left elbow, which I still can't put pressure on, although it is healing, thank goodness! I have since added elbow pads to my gear. The bike: handle bar came loose. I had to totally readjust the entire stem as well. It all went sideways. Seat loose & went off to the side. Luggage rack deeply scarred, my first gear on the Shimano gear is messed up. It hit rocks, and it has a huge scratched up marr. After readjusting all damages on the bike, I took it out 2 days later. Lots of weird screeching. Pulled over, took my front tire off & readjusted it. I carry my bike tools with me. I'm still trying to get my confidence back up. My bike is a Class 1 & 2. I don't have the need for speed, but I now ride with too much caution & that too can be dangerous. I'm working on it though! I'm even scared to go downhill on those gravel paths, but I need to get over it.

To avoid that type of crash, you really have to do two things: 1. Always look where you are going (you were most likely looking at your move into the grass) 2. Ride through when you accidentally go off a trail. That is, you really have to commit to the mistake of going off-trail and ride through it. Trying to turn back on the trail, or braking, as you observed, caused the crash. Its amazing how much your head weighs, and how influential where you are looking effects the outcome.

On a bike path passing a family when a small child darts in front of me. I lock ‘‘em up and launch, and I mean launch, straight up and over the handlebars with my feet flying up over my head. I’m now falling head first into the macadam path. No helmet. Instinctively I put out both arms. My left arm hits first and my body starts twisting, which causes my left forearm bone to snap. Which was a very good thing or it would have been my head. As you say, it happens so fast! If it wasn’t a child, it could have been a dog or a raccoon or whatever. I stopped riding motorcycles when I was 25 because I didn’t like the odds. Riding a bike can be just as dangerous because you can’t trust the road in front of you. And you can’t trust all the other drivers on the road. SLOW DOWN and be defensive.
