Several rescues are happening in this video - but one of them stood out for the team. While most of OCN's rescues are quick and painless, some of them leave the rescuers almost as breathless as the poor creature in front of them. "Seal 5" was one of them - a thin and weak piece of cotton string had left a deep and very painful cut. Flesh had grown into the fabric already, making it difficult for the rescuers to remove it. They had to peel the string out of the wound.
There is no time to linger - they quickly move on to the next seal, there is a seemingly endless amount of entangled seals, and we do our very best to get to them before they get hurt. 🦭

Wally: "It's gonna be a busy day..." Hundreds of seals in this group, is it any wonder you can barely turn around without seeing an entanglement? Four rescuers for that many seals...the odds are against you, but that never stops you. Well done!😇❤

That was a crazy cluster of rescues Team. The deep cuts on the seal with the cotton entanglement were horrendous. Also the overgrown fishing line is a huge problem so I'm pleased you found the tag. There were a couple of tiny pups in this cluster which is very worrying but at least you were able to get them fairly early. ❤ PS: Does Denzil have bionic vision as well as super human speed?! How he can see so many entanglements so quickly is freakish. ☮❤🦘🇦🇺

My goodness......what a busy day at the office!!! The cruelty of fishing lines and cotton string is disturbing and painful to watch these seals suffer through. Thankfully, the Salt Water Pharmacy is open 24-7. What a dedicated and skilled team, to take on these challenging rescues. So many seals entangled with bad cuts. Great job spotting them and cutting these discarded strings out of the seals' necks! The seals were happy to run off for a nice swim after surgery, maybe they are saying, I haven't eaten well in a while, but now I feel like I can, I have a new lease on life! Very productive day! Every time I watch these videos I'm amazed at what you guys do and I thank you for what you do. It is truly unbelievable how much junk is in our ocean doing all his damage to these poor animals they can't help themselves or pull this stuff off themselves. We have so much work to do in cleaning up this planet that we have screwed up because this is the only home that we have and it has our moral responsibility to repair the damage in which we have done to it.

I think I read that Leatherman donates them to you and sends their wonderfully constructed tools. I know they're not made for Seal rescue but Leatherman makes tools that are a serious workers & "handyman's delight" as well as a pro tool. A Cable worker came to wire my Condo years ago and he wore one on his belt in its leather holder. I'd never heard the name before and was curious so I asked if I could see it. He told me he'd never be without one! When he took it out of its sheath and I saw all the useful things it could do...all in a jack-knife configuration, I bought one immediately. Here he was, looking at a (then) 56-57 year old woman, very curiously, and likely wondering "What in the hell does she think she's going to do with that?" Little did he know that this woman had three older brothers who taught her everything they knew and who watched them very carefully. Leatherman, you have served everyone so well and are supporting those I consider "friends"...you're tops!

Every time I see fishing line, hooks or lures at my local rivers or lakes I clean them up. I think it makes a difference in the number of waterfowl that I see with entanglements. Used to see 5-8 geese with missing feet or dragging line per year and now I see only 1-2. The saddest part of the geese entanglements for me is that the geese are ostracized by the flock once they loose a leg and spend the rest of their pain filled life almost always alone or at the edge of a flock being endlessly harassed by other geese.

We go maybe three times a week on average during the year. We have to stop for two months during breeding season though. We rescued 606 seals last year, plus a few other animals.
