Painswick's title of "Queen of the Cotswolds" is well-earned. Its Cotswold stone building-lined streets reveal true history.
Stone has been quarried from Painswick Beacon for the town buildings since Roman times. From at least the 16th Century Painswick's wool cloth industry guaranteed its prosperity.
Cloth weaving has been a fundamental part of the history of Painswick, supporting the growth in population from 118 families in 1495 to 4099 people in 1831. Initially a small scale cottage industry, later mills were powered by the fast flowing Painswick Stream.
While Royalists were encamped in Painswick, tradition has it that King Charles I went up to the Beacon and, seeing the beautiful valley to the east said "This must be Paradise". Since then that valley, and the hamlet on its western side to the north of Painswick have been called Paradise.
