Wow, that really came to life with the dark tones. I did gasp when you put the first blob of Payne’s Grey on! Really starting to understand values, and I’ll definitely try this one. Thanks Joanne 💕

Beautiful painting! I can’t begin to figure out the 7 thumbs down... Even if they were capable of producing something in the same league, why the negativity? I guess, there always has to be at least one. Anyway, thank you for your awesome tutorials! Great artist with great energy!

Love your style Joanne you’re an inspiration. Camera angle not good as couldn’t see how top of painting was done bit disappointed. Glad to see final result from nothing to fabulous. Thanks for taking the time to show us 🥳🥳
Thanks Wendy this was one of the first free tutorials I filmed on my phone, I was disappointed I missed the top off but now have better equipment and more experience 😀

THANKYOU. Because I use strong pigments I have 2 water containers. One for rinsing the brush. And one for wetting the brush. Experience taught me the disasters that result from applying dirty water onto a very pale area. Hope others find this useful. THANKYOU

This was great and I learn so much from all of your videos. You explain the tonal values so well and as someone that loves lots of color I need to work on that more. Thanks so much please keep making these.
This was amazing and fascinating to watch. Thank you for your generosity, Joanne. I don't do landscapes but this has changed my mind about that. The finished piece is beautiful, as is all of your work.

@@JBOONTOM Hi Joanne, I have been a huge fan of yours for several several years! I was thrilled to see you on Patreon, which I signed on with you immediately. Thanks for this other info. I will look into this too. Thank you, again!
I only recently found you, love your work, lovely explanation of light and shade, also texture and techniques. Love to try using water freely and am still struggling with paint to water ratio meanwhile.
Hi Roselyn so glad you are enjoying the tutorials, paint to water ratio will come with practice the more you do it the easier it becomes. Would you like more tutorials from Joanne? Then please do join the new Patreon channel www.patreon.com/joanneboonthomas

Another great demo Joanne. Can't wait to try it. Just did my colour swatch and my paynes gray is more charcoal, no blue tint so thinking I'll use my Indanthrone blue by Daniel Smith as it will give me a green with the cadmium yellow. Thanks again.

I absolutely loved watching this today and even had a go! My colours were very different though, I used Yellow ocre and normal Payne's grey, so the mood was drastically different from yours 🤷
Colette you can't show your image here sorry. I do however have a private facebook group for my Patreons to share paintings from my tutorials and receive an exclusive tutorial to watch anytime once a month. The link is is the description below
This is just lovely. Thanks for sharing your techniques. Would be interesting to see a video if you do decide to replicate it in colour, even though l love this one just as it is. You have a new subscriber!
Hi Joanne, messaging you from Calgary, Canada. I love your loose painting style as well as your teaching style. Will you be doing more that 1 video/month? Hoping to join Patreon soon. Thank you for sharing your beautiful work!

Love your style, much harder than it looks. I have a request though, can you make sure your camera has got the whole work area in shot before you start painting. Couldn't see the whole top part of what you were doing.
Hi I agree, this was filmed months ago when I was using my phone thanks to my Patreons I now have a much better set up. Hope it didn't spoil your enjoyment too much Joanne
@@JBOONTOM Of course not, love your tutorials. Off topic question. Andrew Geeson holds week long workshops...price includes a B&B. Would you be doing anything like this once this covid nightmare is over?
@@JBOONTOM I am in Vancouver but am hoping to go to one...eventually. Do you have a website or a list I could go on to be contacted with info once you DO start them up again?
I LOVE your style, only just 'found' you & will be sticking with you for the foreseeable! I can't even do a bloomin' poppy yet, but this cottage is wonderful. Do you deliberately leave tiny white gaps between (for example) bush and wall? It makes all the difference, but I didn't hear you mention it, so perhaps it is incidental? From a new devotee, from Hutton/Longton, Lancashire, but now in Vendée, France. x
Hi Sandra this demonstration probably isn't for beginners so don't worry about not being able to keep up I only hope that you pick up some tips and techniques along the way especially those little white areas that just gives a painting a bit of sparkle! I now have a Patreon channel that has lessons to suit beginners and intermediate so please do let me know if you would like to join us but am more than happy that you are enjoying my free tutorials for now 😊
@@JBOONTOM Hi Joanne - sorry it's a bit late! Just been to look at Patreon ,with a view to signing up! It says, if I join now, it will be renewed 1st November, so I guess better to wait till then, so I get a whole month?? Not being greedy, a pensioner!! :)

Beautiful!! I like your style and the way you explain the techniques!! I have a question. Can I use a blower to dry it faster of it is better to wait until it drys by it self? Thanks.
It's a shame the top of the painting was cut off as you were painting, because we couldn't see what you were describing as you were painting. Lovely though.
Hi Joanne I recently discovered your work and I love it! One question tho the paper you use it is cold or hot pressend? I could imagine with a hot pressed paper the pain will run easier, but because you talked about texture (indentations) I got confused about the choice of paper. Thank you for the lovely video ❤️
@@JBOONTOM thank you for the clarification. I work a lot with charcoal which is indeed a perfect exercise on values but I am an absolute beginner when it comes to watercolor. However I am inspired by you and want to give it a go. Fingers crossed 🤞 Merry Christmas from the Netherlands. Stay safe stay healthy!
I would like to send this tutorial to a few friends in email but having trouble doing it. I think its perfectly done and our small group of painters would love watching your tutorial!! CAn you assist me? Lucy
Hi Lucy if you go to my YT page you will see three little dots in the right upper corner this will allow you to share to several places including email there are also YT tutorials to show you If you email me at joannethomas81@gmail.com I can show you how
The entire top of the church was out of camera. No one else mentioned. Is there a setting in utube I don’t have ratio set correctly? Or is your painting out of camera at the top? Thank you for lesson very good. I’m interested why you would use an opaque yellow like cad yellow. And both paints are very staining, even when waterdown. Just wondering if you could talk a little about that concept of a painting. Loved the results, will set out to do next. I’ve sketched out on Bee paper spiral notebook. I have heard of Bockingford paper but have yet, not been able to find a place to purchase in US. I will post when it’s completed. Thank you
This is really a great painting, but, sadly I never saw one of the most important parts that your camera didn't catch and that's everything above the roof of your building! Cheers C
@@JBOONTOM Thank you Joanne! After I saw the first one, monochrome in blue of the church and the tree to its right I was hooked and will be watching many more! I love it! Cheers C
Hi Ritha this tutorial was one of the first free tutorials I filmed during the pandemic, obviously this was very new to me and I was also using my phone as I didn't have the correct equipment. Thanks to my Patreons I now have the right equipment and am much more confident when filming my tutorials. I realise that this particular tutorial has the top slightly missing from the painting but I hope it didn't spoil your enjoyment too much 🙂

If you have been following me or even bother to read my comments you would know that I started to offer FREE tutorials but only had my phone and limited filming skills. Thanks to my Patreons I now have decent filming equipment and offer much more professional filming. ALL the lessons here are free some better quality than others, it's been a learning curve. I am sorry if my filming spoiled your enjoyment but please do take my inexperience into account
