I think the color for the base makes sense! It looks similar to color used for all the earth, gunk and skulls around the ruins on his head. Which makes sense to me if he's springing up from underneath the ruins after being buried underneath it.
I think you did him justice. I agree GW's way of painting him wasn't the best, this looks much more natural and troll-like. I've got my Belthanos set but haven't built him yet, just looked for guides and there aren't that many, one for black beetle, one a red and one a more autumnal orange. I'm not sure how I'll paint mine yet, but eager to see what you do with it.
You get such good use and range from black templar across your paintjobs, I don't know what I'm doing wrong with it - every time I try and give it another go it ends up very green and not at all like yours does.
