Hello & welcome! Whilst I paint, I’m sharing ways I use rules and briefs in my painting practice to help navigate focus and creative block. In this session, I work both inside and outside, over two days to create a new number of paintings on paper.
I headed outside for a plein-air session with fellow painter Emily Morey - check out their work here: emilymorey.com/?page_id=1630
Check out the video intro to this series of work, where I share the influences and goals for this project: www.orlastevens.com/findingna...
If you happen to be based in the UK, I am running two in-person outdoor drawing workshops in August 2023. Full workshop info & tickets here: www.orlastevens.com/workshops

This might be a weird comment, but i really like and appreciate that you work on paper. I feel a strange pressure to work on board or canvas in order for a piece to feel 'real', but that's absolutely just a made-up thing! (I also find your finished pieces very beautiful and evocative.)
@OrlaStevens

not at all; I know exactly what you mean! But especially for experimental series (and the sake of my storage haha) paper is the best for just getting stuck in. Plus, framing always elevates it 🌞

Orla, you've really got a perfect blend of soothing music, calming voice, and such supportive, helpful energy. You're "Painting session brief" practice is so clever and as someone who's got a BFA I'm stunned that nobody has ever mentioned this! It's SOOOOOO game-changing. I am definitely going to start using this and I can't wait to see its positive effects.

@@OrlaStevens I did nine paintings at once and now I am doing four larger paintings at once. It's been really fun. I'm thinking I might set up 20 different small paper canvases and do different color palettes because I have trouble with that... Anyways thanks again! Great fun!

Thanks for your lovely video. I think I make the mistake of putting to much pressure on myself when I create art and than I end up disliking most of it or only doing drawings that seem a little to stiff. When I paint abstract I seem to dislike it but when I see you and other artists painting abstract I want to paint abstract. It’s all a journey for all of us. Thank you for sharing your journey.

Some really stunning pieces amongst this "batch". Loads of great points with which I concur. I WISH wish wish I could paint plein air but I have a neuro and autonomics disease, added to the fact I live in sub-tropical Australia and, well, you see the problem. Before I got so sick and my kids were young, I used to take them outside to paint by the pool and then just chuck them in when it was all over. Art, outdoors, exercise - my ultimate daily goals these days. Loved your process and ultimately the results it created. Simple but genius idea to write out your objectives going in. You've just taught an old dog (read artist 😂) a new (well, old but forgotten) trick. Thank you. Def new sub 👍

this is so therapeutic, thank you for posting, I have been in art school and learned classic art but never abstract, and honestly never understood or appreciated the abstract art. until really today when I watched your videos I felt something, i felt how "imperfect" art is si talkative and expressive and that is what I have been missing the most in life lately... I want more imperfection because this makes me feel better about my own imperfections

Great video about your process. I agree it is always super fascinating to see how other artists go about their practice. I also use Plein Air as part of a process towards abstraction, although I start with field observations outside and then bring what I find back into the studio as a starting point. Like you I think it gives me a safe leaping off point. Thank you for sharing your practice!

Thank you Clare! Oh amazing, we have lots of similarity in process :) that’s exactly how I work normally - the weather and the size of the works let me finish up these ones outside for a change. What brought you to plein air? I’d love to see your work! Do you have a website?

Hi Orla, I have recently stumbled on your video. Your style is so different to anything I have done, but I love your results! More so, I find you calming and inspiring, not just to paint, nor to go outside, but just to see beauty about me. Thank you. I was wondering what you use for your floor mat? It is such a liberating way to paint.

You ARE pushing me to do something similar, have tried to do more like 3-4 smaller pieces ar a time, think they were more like 25x25 cm. But I really do see your point in going smaller. Think you are right…it will take away any pressure or ambition. Think you really have made me go for it😎👏…by the way, I think I could be your granny, am a 73 year old Dane😍

Hello! 👋 let me know how you get on if you do try the smaller pieces! Don’t get me wrong; working large scale is amazing, there’s nothing better. But I’ve found this a great way just to relax and try things out. Haha amazing, have you always painted? ☀️

I have painted on and off all my life, less when I had 3 children and jobs. Now I have a Big garden i am trying to make my object of drawing mostly with watercolor pencils of many kinds, Inktense, graphitint oil pastels…live by the sea and the forrest is next door…it is such a challenge for me to stop looking at you and other painters I follow in stead of going out myself…. But as I said, you do inspire me to go more often.😍
