Just beautifully drawn & painted! What a lovely memory when your son was young to now have it painted. The hair looks fabulous & I can’t believe that you think you need more practice with painting people. Loved watching it all. Thanks for sharing, cheers 😊💕🥰❤️😍😘

This honestly looks like a painting by someone who regularly does human portraits. Super useful video to me, too, particularly working through the "ugly bits" of the hair stage, it is such an integral part to stay focused in, and push through. Thank you for the video, all the best to you and your son (as a subject and also filmographer!)

I normally hate portraits of children because they are always pictured either smiling wildly or crying uncontrollably. It's as though children are forced into these roles where they exist in the extremes of emotion, as performative objects that exist for the gratification of adults. It's refreshing to see a portrait of a child in repose, a reflective quiet moment in that area between sleep and wakefulness. The morning light is bright and activating, but it's as if your son has not yet absorbed its vibrant energy. Thank you for bringing us along on your journey as you learn.

Louise, As always, another wonderful video. This painting of your son is precious!! I have taken a couple of watercolor portrait classes from Stan Miller, who also uses a limited palette. His method for teaching us to see and duplicate local color for skin was to create what we thought was an average skin tone using red/yellow/blue, then we had strips of our watercolor paper with a window cut out that we could lay over the part of the photo (or over our own skin) in order to isolate and really "see" the color that is there. We would paint a small swatch of our base color next to the window, and from there we could see if the skin was actually more yellow, red, blue, purple, green than what our original base was. At that point we could pull from our base color and then adjust the bias by adding a bit more blue or whatever to shift the color, comparing with new swatches next to that window. It was very surprising to see just how far away most of the local color was from what I assumed--we aren't nearly as peachy as we think we are!! :) And it's amazing how DARK the whites of our eyes usually are in a photo!! Ultimately, value is more important than matching local color, but this method of isolating a small section of the photo to actually see what was there instead of what we think is there has been priceless--and I have used this method for seeing color and value ever since. I wanted to share, in case this might be helpful for you. (He does have some RU-vid videos in which he demonstrates this.)
