The bad part, it actually looks like a new building that someone built , just by the colors of the materials. The real wood, the grey roof looks metallic, the bricks, metal hinges and mortar are also natural colors. I added this part at the end., beautiful!!!!😁😁😁😁

Martin, when you were painting the doors and windows, I had an idea. If you were to pint a base coat, (the original paint when the barn was new), you could then use your "Chipping Technique" to have a newer paint on top, but the old paint showing through in places, especially where hands interact with the doors in the usual places, like around the locks and where the farmer pushes the doors closed. In this way, it would be just like painting a tank where the paint was scuffed by walking on it, etc.

While the whole thing looks really good to me I am particularly impressed by the wear and decay to the bottom of the doors
@darkwood777
@darkwood777 2 года назад
You did a wonderful job. Just amazing. I have two small suggestions. First one is that I would darken the areas that are going to be touched a great deal by the farmers. This darkening comes from years of dirty wet hands touching the wood. So darken around the door latches and along the door frames of the entrance side of the doors at the height of hands. If the latches are the type that hang down when unlatched, there should be a semicircular wear mark to show this. The second suggestion is that there should be dirt splatter around the perimeter coming from the ground due to rain. The contrast of the splatter band would be darker after a rain, and lighter after time drying in the sun, but there should be something here around the base of the building to show the accumulation of dirt over the years. Maybe more so on the side with the roof eave where rain runs off.

The more I think about it, the *less* amazing your first building is. No, it wold be amazing for anyone else, really, my point is that you've spent a lifetime learning to actually *look* at things with an artist's eye and reproduce what you see in paint (and other media). The subtle (and where necessary not so subtle) tonal variation in the wood, brick and roof tiles, the moss, the fricking nails in the wood, if any of it was off by the least bit, the whole would fall flat. But it stands up, it looks like a for real barn sometimes creepily so for example at 13:18 where it looks like a giant has decided to touch up a window frame on a normal-sized building. Crossing over from one comfortable range of subjects, like armor, to subjects you don't think you can be comfortable with like figures and buildings, is a whole lot easier with your skill set. It's what all modelers aspire to, and you inspire us. I'm 67 years old but I will still say thank you Uncle Night Shift.

@NightShiftScaleModels
@NightShiftScaleModels 3 года назад
@@lordzombey1337 I see, finding a good foam can be tricky. It has to be the densest foam you can find. For example, I bought a large slab of Styrodur 2800C the other day and while it looked okay at a first glance, it's too coarse, but it could work with some extra effort. The higher the number, the denser the foam is gonna be.

Yup made my evening. Have painted military models since I was in grade school. Yeah some of those lovely snap together types that make us cringe now were among the starters. Seeing a "heads up" from Night Shift means popcorn and kick back. Always up for seeing how someone else does it. Most of my painting now is for this or that table top game, but the occasional diorama of "this picture of Grandpa" comes in. Almost all Vietnam era stuff now with around 15 of this or that from Desert Storm or Iraqi/Enduring Freedom. Thanks for the ideas. Have tried a few though still not a fan of oil paints.
