Your sense of proportion, depth, and scale create a gobsmacking realism. You could have done this painting in neon and your sense of proportion, depth, and scale would give it a sense of total realism. What I'm saying is I love you, would you be my father?
And having worked with Gouache for a few months now, I feel he makes it look so much easier than it actually is, that stuff wants to dry so fast and I find it difficult to get good colour gradients when working with it.
In my humble view, the only other artist I have seen operate as Mr.Gurney do is, artist the late, Me. Ken Auster. These two gentlemen, as I stated earlier, in my view, are two pillars that tower above most artists I've researched so far online and social media. God's blessed them tremendously.I.want to be blessed so too.
I don't know why, but American supermarkets are aesthetically pleasing, I just enjoy looking to see what types of colors they use while my mom goes to get cereal like brown, light brown, red, white (lots of it). I just really enjoy observing the things that almost no one realizes adds to the experience
nuts and bolts It seems like it was in the late ‘90s when they started trying out the whole “hey why don’t we make this place look nice” idea. Before that it was white or beige everywhere with maybe a “brand” color like red or blue. There’s a nostalgic feel to those beige and red stores, but I definitely go for the dark lighting, wood toned modern stores.
There are some neat articles you can Google that came out a few years ago about the research into the best color temperature lighting to show off produce and such. I remember a thing about different temps used in the meat department, which primarily had red merchandise, versus produce, which had a lot of green.
Love American grocery stores and health food stores (they are smaller and more old-timey than the slick, clean supermarkets). They also attract more interesting characters there, too!
For a guy who doesnt paint like me its really like watching magic happening. How you give perspective and life with a few hits here and there. And the result is incredible everytime.
“By hiding a vanishing point behind someone’s head, you attract attention to that spot” I have never thought of this but it makes so much sense, what a great tip
You are just delightful! I love watching you paint....bingeing several of your tutorials (almost all of which I’ve purchased) is one of the most enjoyable ways to spend a rainy day when I don’t really feel like painting. Every time I watch any of your videos, no matter how often I’ve seen it before, I learn something new or am reminded of something I had forgotten. Thanks for sharing your expertise so generously and so often amusingly!
Ridiculous.... what skill. It almost makes me want to give up painting myself seeing what's possible. LOVE the style of James' work but never had the opportunity to see it up close being in the UK. Its like watching someone knock out a symphony in real time.... appreciate the videos so much. ✌🏽
I ALWAYS learn something new from your painting videos, Mr. Gurney. Folks, if you dont own his book Color & Light, you NEED to pick it up. It's literally the best book on the subject. You will learn so much from it.
I can watch this guy for hours - watching that incredible level of detail emerge either inspires me or makes me want to throw my paints away - depends on the day! Fantastic
there’s so much experience and instinct, it’s so cool how he knows what to do with every stroke, it feels very efficient, well planned out and spontaneous at the same time :0

A true artist doesn't let anything stop them, not the absence of paint, canvas, or a pandemic!😎👍👏
Stunning. I’m in awe of your relaxed approach, James. I paint tightly and methodically and, unsurprisingly, my work looks dead. Your paintings are alive. How can I relax and not be so afraid of making mistakes?
So happy to find this. Several times I have taken pictures of little kids in the grocery store with the thought of them being a painting. I have the habit of trying to put you much detail. I hope to now give them a try. One is a little bit with a great hat, picking produce. The other is a delightful little girl walking away pushing her little grocery cart.
Yet again I watch one of your videos and I see you paint, I see you mix colours and yet by some kind of voodoo the scene magically appears in front of me and I'm at a loss to how you did it. I'm starting to think you are a wizard of some sort masquerading as a human. I'm on to you Gurney!
James , you are out of this world and such an inspiration. Thank you for the video and information. Blessings and be safe. An awesome idea much appreciated during this time.
An absolute master, in my top ten favourite modern day artists, Scott Robertson mentioned you in a video when he was using Gouache and I had seen your work briefly, I’m completely hooked, what a talent and inspiration you are, thank you for sharing your talent with us.
I wish you'd record the entire miracle. You give us glimpses of magic that are too brief. I know you have videos on Amazon, but you should really consider recording the entire process. I think there's a market.
I like to watch your videos twice - once to see you paint the thing, and the other time to watch your palette (how much paint you use, hone in on your color mixes, etc). Such a valuable experience! Thank you
This is one of the best "watercolor tutorials court I've seen on the Internet. LOL not getting caught up in the details Capturing the big shapes awesome I really love your work.
As a somewhat chaotic painter myself, I appreciate the way you mix your colors. You just know what you want on the paper and mix it automatically without much thought. I hope I’m that skilled one day. Edit: my drawing professor said a very similar thing about complex drawings and/or paintings, and it seems fitting that I’m hearing it from my favorite painter on RU-vid
Another incredible painting and awesome video episode. Six hours in an enclosed, really crowded supermarket though? Coronavirus might be entering a second wave now. Please stay safe.
James, I thoroughly love your videos and really glad that I came here after a recent reread of Dinotopia. I really enjoy watching you paint and your explanations. I might even dive in myself one day!
You are an amazing artist! At first I thought you were painting with watercolor then I saw your palette and I thought it was acrylic. I have never heard of casein paint before. I loved this painting!
