I've recently been painting a marines boarding patrol, but I was struggling a bit because it took so long to paint each individual model to the standard I wanted. The thing that helped me was to adapt my scheme so there was a sort of table top standard mid point in the process, with just the base colours and a wash, and then I could just take my time finishing them up with the details and extra highlights when I felt like it, which really helped make it feel like progress, even though in the end it will probably take a bit longer over all to finish them fully.

Yeah I think there’s a ton of merit in this approach.

I did this project by starting with the smallest minis and working my way up to the large single figure pieces, all the way up to archaon, it helped me get my eye in as it were and they were also my reward for working through the small stuff.

Great content, I always struggled with overwhelming projects and once I switched to painting only what I wanted to paint in that moment, I got my momentum back. Also the part about playing is great. I’ve never been so productive shortly before and after gaming events with my mates. Also Henry, please make a video about your metallic scheme, it looks awesome and I would love to see, how you painted one of the models from start to finish.
@cultcommissions4722
@cultcommissions4722 Год назад
I think immersing yourself in what you truly want to paint is absolutely vital. The gaming keeps the momentum going and you will no doubt identify a unit you wish you'd had in the game and bump it to the top of the "to do list"

Great chat folks. The original videos you put up around grey scheme made me want to do an army myself. But struggled myself to blast that army box and the older start collecting box. I used “work” mode and had a methodical task list and backlog, doing and done in true scrum, AGILE, Kanbam fashion to get through it. That massively helped me and means I now only have the ogriods and can add more when I feel like it.

A great approach.I like to make task lists on units that have become a challenge. It's just more appealing to know that it's not one mammoth task, rather multiple easily achieved ones

The warcry release got me into slaves to darkness. Starting painting those gangs and picked up an old start collecting box. Now they have loads more ace models.

I might have said this before, but think it is worth repeating. What really helped me dealing with demotivation while painting, is to focus on what I have already done instead of what I still have to do. I does help if you like what you already have done, but don't think that is essential.
@cultcommissions4722
@cultcommissions4722 Год назад
I like that mindset. Helps you to see the unfinished pieces potential to be as cool as those you've completed

i got the vangaurd nighthaunt box a bit before christmas around a week ago i decided to knuckle down and just get stuck in and paint, and iv nearly done them just got some rust on the metals to do, finish off the bronzes, and then the bases (which im keeping quite simple) and i can get most of that done tomorow

I found what helped me is to do, build 10, prime 10, paint 10. Give yourself small segmented project bits. And don't rush it!

i'm doing 3 armies simultaneously that are the same three colours, red silver and black, guardians of the covenant, word bearers and argent shroud. then i have 2 armies that are black and green, necrons and nighthaunt, a marine army thats a wildly different in technique to anything i've ever done before, and a lumineth army that im still working the kinks out of the scheme. i dont have an issue of motivation, i have an issue with knuckling down lol.

I'd been stuck for ages on painting a heresy army, because it felt like a huge investment before I could actually play a game and the thing that made it happen was my gaming group running a zone mortalis campaign which started at 350 points and worked up, with a session once a month(ish). This meant that I've now got a bit chunk of the infantry done so I can play games, and then if I add units it's "paint one unit and immediately be able to play a game with it".
@cultcommissions4722
@cultcommissions4722 Год назад
I think those slow grow campaign are perfect to tackle large army projects. Regular micro deadlines for games are good to keep pace and to motivated foe the next one. Love it

@@cultcommissions4722 yes, i am picking up more of the new stuff, and i already had painted up the start collecting box with the lord on carcadrac in the first edition of that scheme years ago when that box released, and i have almost all the warcry units we can use, and its only 2 of them thats not painted so i actully got a bit already, but want more of the new stuff since its so cool

It's implicit here, but the other thing that helps me is having a plan to quickly tackle a major area of each mini in the batch, like the armor. It's easier to push through the smaller parts if you can see so much of it done and like the look of it. I see those parts and tell myself, yeah, this really is going to look cool when it's done even w shortcuts, and there isnt that much more to do...even if those details drag on.
