I hear those sleigh bells ringing.. It’s the first day of the 12 Days of Proko! Today I’m painting Santa Claus using gouache paint. I’ll give you advice on using the medium and take you through the whole process, from photoshoot, to thumbnail sketches, color comps and final painting. Disney animator, Aaron Blaise, was kind enough to be my Santa model!

ABOUT YOUNGARTS
It’s a really good program for high school students. Basically what they do is find about 100 or so really talented artists in high school and they fly them out to Miami for a week for an amazing artistic experience. It goes beyond just this one week. Once you’re an alumni, you’re part of the group. They try to nurture these artists and help them out as they’re transitioning to become professional artists. They connect the students to mentors who are well known in the field. Many win money to fund their artwork.

I am... woah..... This kind of made my day XD I really like seeing how people work on their thumbnail stage, it was something I thought people only did for animation, comics, and designs, and since I discovered that it wasn't the case, well... everything turned out so much easier. It was a big facepalm "Of course people do thumbnails for illustrations and everything else!!! Why wouldn't they?!". Also, to see Aaron Blaise is always a pleasant surprise.

So fascinating watching your process, and to see how you use gouache so differently from my self taught technique. Great tip about having the paint sit on the wet tissue! I'd love to know what type of masking tape you're using. Every time I've used tape it's been a bugger to get off cleanly.

It's called painter's tape. It's less sticky and easier to pull off than normal tape.

I've been looking on Amazon but all the masking tape I've found seems to have at least one reviewer saying it's rubbish for art work. I suppose I'll just have to buy some and test it out. Cheers.

Dear Proko, I am currently a Sophomore and I applied for the YoungArts thing in the summer. I didn't have any close artists at the time and i feel as if my portfolio was scratchy. My guardians didn't tell me about anything either and I feel as if I didn't get in. I know I am a good artists and understand fundamental things. Can you make a video for artists in high school, and what they should do to best prepare a portfolio.

You may want to see if there are any good Ateliers in your area and take a couple classes. Stan went to Watts starting in high school and that education helped him out a lot. The ones listed in the Art Renewal Center are all pretty good ( www.artrenewal.org/Atelier/Search ). Good luck!

Looking at this amazing painting, make realize that I'll never be able to do such amazing thing, it makes me feel really pathetic, cuz I know that it doesn't matter how long I keep practicing on my own I'll never reach such lvl of skill. I feel even more depressed that I couldn't never be privileged to go to an university or even pay a master so they could help learning things, so practically everything that I know was all on my own and still I can't do nothing like that, it makes me feel horrible, Definitely, learning on your on is not the same as doing a course or going to college, cuz in both cases you need money, which I don't have. Learning on your own you need to know all the in and outs during practice and do them properly, but even if you try your hardest, don't matter what, you still have a ton of doubts and there are things that you can't do don't matter how much you practice, also getting criticism on internet is not the same as having someone at your side, helping you and saying how to do stuff and clearing all your doubts. Unfortunately, I don't have the "talent'' to get the things right on my own, criticism from internet is useless for me since I have no one at my side to Guide me and even though I practice, most of the time it just serve to make me have the impression that I improved, but then when I try to put the things on a work, it makes me realized that I actually haven't really improved at all. So I watch videos like yours to find inspiration, but in the end I just realize how pathetic I am, at point that make feel like giving up of everything , even being alive and of course this is not Proko's fault, it's my fault for being a pierce of garbage that can't do anything right in art nor in life. I you are one of these people that can actually improve after a certain amount of practice and can understand what needs to be done with no direct help at all, you are truly blessed, it might feels good to create art and make even the most simple thing looking amazing.

I like to watch Neil Gaiman's commencement speech at the University of the Arts when I'm feeling discouraged (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ikAb-NYkseI.html). He outlines a really good strategy for becoming creatively fulfilled in your work. Keep making progress, no matter how much, and work on projects that make you happy. That's all anyone can ever really do. It's a good watch, hope it helps.

Stan, i love and everything, but you just cringe me with that watercolors cant be dissolved in water after dried up, you must mean children watercolor kits, because gouache is well known to be many times harder to dissolve with water when dry. and winsor and newton's gouache is a high quality gouache, but most high quality watercolor brands are very easy to dissolve and never go rock hard, except for some certain pigments, and yeah it is not that much of a big deal, but whatever.

In regards to the paint re activation, I wonder if he misspoke, and meant to say acrylic paint or something.
@KEP1983
@KEP1983 6 лет назад
He didn't just say paint reactivation, he also mentioned opacity and also white paint, I believe.
@MondayMorningMist
@MondayMorningMist 6 лет назад
Keith P that's true, he did mention opacity as well. Proko's exact line was "it's kind of like watercolor, but you can go in with thick, opaque paint if you want, and you can reactivate the paint with water after it dries. That's something you can't do with watercolor." So what some of us were raising an eyebrow at, was because the "can't do with watercolor line" came directly after the paint reactivation line, it implies that you can't reactivate paint with watercolor. And I, and probably the other commentators know that's probably not what Proko meant, but it's just something to note. Anyhow, it's not that big of a deal and I'm probably just being nitpicky haha.
@SilverNachtmahr
@SilverNachtmahr 6 лет назад
Noel Uchendu by using pans, you're reactivating the paint, actually. :p
@SilverNachtmahr
@SilverNachtmahr 6 лет назад
Noel Uchendu I know what he is referring to. You can still reactivate paint on paper. Sometimes it will stain, sometimes it will not. All I'm referring to now is that you said that your pan paint doesn't reactivate... while it clearly does. I'm not confused at all, I'm just pointing out a mistake Proko made.

I really don't understand this approach - adding wet paper below the paint - james gurney does that too but the paper or cloth will suck the paint and you will lose a bit everytime, if it's directly on the surface, all it takes is a sprinkle o water to be active again.
@nerdycurls6253
@nerdycurls6253 6 лет назад
yes but a damp surface keeps the guache a moveable as it was out of the tube, ive tried both ways and my quache is much smoother with a damp tissue under it then when i simple sprayed it. yes u can re activate it with a spray but it loses some of the creamy smoothness I love, :P dont know if this helped im no expert this is just my opinion
@procrast
@procrast 6 лет назад
yeah, I don't need creamy paint as I tend to have a more watercolor-ish approach. when need thicky paint, just go for the tube. but sure, if it works for you, keep doing it.
