Painting and Installing Ram 1500 Fender Flares

I purchased OEM style fender flares for my 2015 Ram 1500 4x4 Lonestar. Instead of leaving them flat black, I painted them to match my white truck with Rustoleum enamel and a lacquer clear code. I finished them off with a light polish and bolted them on the truck.
This DIY project takes some time, but is doable without any special tools, and will end up looking great and cost half the price (or less) of having pre-painted fender flares installed by a shop.

Excellent! I found your video extremely helpful, and I say that from Canada. Thank you, Mr. Adventure One!

If you prep them with a red 3m pad and spray them with raptor Liner they look real good and it's super easy to do. If you don't have a compressor, harbor freight bedliner in cans works well.

Three pro tips. First wet sand your paint before clear coat. Second blow torch on clear coat removes bubbles. Third peel up a tab you can pull the adhesive with out digging for it. Over all great job.

Yea "blow torch on clear coat removes bubbles" and will catch on fire and burn your shit to the ground, clear coat as well as all paint are FLAMMABLE, stupid does as stupid says!

Very nice mod, it was very helpful for me. My flares are waiting to be installed.

Primer IS worth not saving a couple dollars.... The primer and paint you chose to use DOES NOT have a flex additive in it. Therefore, all that paint will flake/chip off your flairs within a year or so. Sorry to bear the bad news. Also, trying to say this as nice as possible, work on your painting technique. Dont shake the can in little spots. Long strokes, spraying past your project.😊

I bought a Black Dodge and ordered good flares that are already black .. now I'm considering painting just to match the gloss paint.

Can you give me a link where to find these fender flares? And how much coverage did it give you, did it say in specs?

Have these prevented mud and dirt from splashing up the side of the truck. I feel like my truck is always dirty from tire spray.

I had to choose between a Sport or Laramie (both same price in Europe) and went with the Sport in black. Love it, but I do really want some fender flares + my side steps and the sides of the vehicle are always dirty and muddy. However, I'm looking for a more OEM kind of look. On these fenders, you can see there's raw plastic underneath. I don't know how they do it in the factory, but those that come standard on a Laramie for example, look exactly like all of the other body panels (totally smooth and soft).

Dude!!! No no no! Read Scotch-Brite, 99% isopropyl alcohol 2degrees the mold release agent that is all over those fenders from a factory, and to get rid of the static electricity cause by sanding it. And always always always use adhesion promoter on plastic before primer!!!!

How many cans of colored paint & clear coat cans do you need? In my cart I have 2 cans of colored paint, 2 cans of clear coat, 1 can of primer and sand paper. Am I missing anything and is my count off?
@AdventureOne
@AdventureOne 2 года назад
You are probably pretty close. It likely depends on the color. Just don't skimp on the clear coat. Use a bit more than you think it needs, but in many thin coats. Don't let it run

Can you install them without using that tape to make it easier to remove them later - if you so decide????
@AdventureOne
@AdventureOne 5 лет назад
Not really. The tape hold the top section on. Alcohol should easily dissolve the tape when it is time to remove

Won’t these rust your fenders after a while if you live in an area with snow/salt on the roads? That’s what I’ve heard that it gets stuck between the flare and the fender and it rusts your truck to shit. That’s why I haven’t pulled the trigger on these.
@AdventureOne
@AdventureOne 6 лет назад
I live in Tx, so I can't comment on areas that use a lot of salt on the roads. On a previous truck, I had these on for 2 years without any rust.
@bigearn8782

That's why there's double sided 'fender flare tape' used to prevent the friction and damage. Some use a length of foam clip for flares. Some use the $155 tape, some use 3M $9 tape.

Extremely close. Looking at it more than a year later, I recommend using more clear coat than I did.

I checked with a local auto body shop and my quote was $525.00 just in case anybody was debating doing this yourself. (Disclaimer: my truck has the Black Forest Pearl paint which costs a little more)

hey man i watched your old video where u say that u had prk done on u like 2 year ago, do u see starbursts or something during night ? or there is no side effects?
@AdventureOne
@AdventureOne 6 лет назад
I had a little biut of an astigmatism (starbursts) before. PRK definitely exaggerated it a bit, but my vision has held pretty well, and at this point positives still outweigh the negatives and I am glad I did it.

No rubber trim on the lip with scratch the shit out of the clear coat and possibly the paint.
@fathergratwick

If there like most, theres double sided adhesive tape on the back side which actually prevents that from happening just like it does on the OEM factory flares.

Were those the tapping screws you used? Or justvthe normal bolts? Mine came with screws but they are farrrr too short.
@AdventureOne
@AdventureOne 6 лет назад
AIt came with self-tapping screws but I did not use them. I reused the original screws on the truck that hold the inner fender liner to the metal. There are more holes than screws, so I went back and added some trim clips later.

I used the screws originally on the truck (that hold the plastic inner fender) then used trim pins for the rest of the holes

I got the same flares on Amazon for $178. Local Body shop is painting them. Estimate was $350-400. I have the Rugged Brown Pearlcoat so matching was important
@scrapplepig
@scrapplepig 4 года назад
In the future you can get exact color match in a rattle can and they spray great. No drips or blotching. It's like $25 a can, they match the paint code on your truck.
@bigvol1596

Good luck with spraying it yourself. I’m sure it will turn out decent but no where near what a paint shop can do. Why not spend the extra $300 and have it looking “factory”?

Pantone or PMS is that color code name
@AdventureOne
@AdventureOne 6 лет назад
Mine was "PW7" Which is chryster/dodge/ram "Pearl White, Non-metallic". (their own matching system for selling touch-up paint) Maybe some other auto bands us PMS colors - which would be nice, PMS is a far better color matching system.
