I can’t believe your grunts painted this Raccoon with the same brush directions. I could imagine one side painted horizontal and the other vertical then the two realising when they meet in the middle and the ensuing argument on who was wrong haha

@@Crosshatch1212Unfortunately I don't know of any suppliers in the UK. Perhaps check with local modelers or clubs there to see if they have sources? Most of the time I order directly from hlj.com. Shipping is expensive, but it is generally reliable. Good luck finding some kits!

I like seeing you replicate (not quite the right word, because you don't do it exactly the same, but add your own flavor) other techniques because its interesting to see how they get applied when other people do them (easy example is using lacquer vs acrylic and how technique changes). I do wonder, if you used (as examples) rapid thinner vs leveling thinner if you would have more (or less) slack to go over an area multiple times with lacquer. It seems like rapid thinner would give you more time/more paint strokes, although maybe in practice its not a whole multiple so it doesn't matter.
@JonBius
@JonBius 9 месяцев назад
I've tried both, and the difference isn't really that much in terms of what you can do. The thing that you face with lacquers is the reactivation thing, so you have to account for it. Since the lacquers never cure, going over an area a second time will always activate the layer underneath. The key is giving it a try and then seeing what works and what doesn't! Thanks for watching and commenting!

Great video as always, Jon! I also really love how that complex engine finish came out. Happy to see you feeling less boxed in by the algorithms and more in tune with building and sharing whatever fun and exciting new project comes your way. Love your take on Ma.K and you're one of the big influences that got me into that property and introduced me to Lincoln Wright. That Luna Combat book is an excellent follow up to his MK44 Vol 1

great video Jon! I might try some Ma. K myself down the line. Unrelated question, but do you have a favorite semi-gloss top coat to suggest? I use Mr. Hobby GX gloss and matt, but they don't have a semi-gloss in the GX line unfortunately.

Thanks so much for your kind words, and for watching and commenting! The only satin varnish I use any more is VMS Varnish HD. It is by far the best I've ever used, and because it is acrylic, it works on pretty much everything without fear of chemical interactions. I'd actually given up on satin varnishes until I found this stuff. (www.vms-supplies.com/product-page/vms-varnish-hd-100-ml) I hope that helps!
@lucanivini6664
@lucanivini6664 9 месяцев назад
@@JonBius Thanks a lot! If I may ask, why had you given up on satin varnishes? Not good enough or just not useful?
@JonBius
@JonBius 9 месяцев назад
@@lucanivini6664 Most were not really satin. A good satin varnish will be smooth enough so that oil washes flow nicely, but without "bleed". But they also need to be "not glossy". Others I used were to too textured or glossy for my tastes. VMS hit the "sweet spot" perfectly.

I was wondering what type of camera you use to film your shows? I'm 70 and my eyesight is not as good has it was, I was thinking of trying to work on a model and have it up on a monitor to make it easier to see what I'm doing, More of a real time display, Do you think that would work? Really enjoy your work,
@JonBius
@JonBius 4 месяца назад
I actually just use my phone! I have found an optivisor to be very, very helpful. I also have fairly poor eyesight. And A LOAD of good light in the 5K - 6K range. I've tried to use my camera to help with small stuff, but often the perspective is vey 'flat", and because movements are exaggerated in scale, it's been more useful to "check my work" than to actually use it like a magnifier. However - give it a try certainly! It took my brain a while to adjust to the optivisor, so it might be the same thing with using the camera as a magnifier. I hope that will help!

That white paint job was absolutely atrocious. Maybe the worst I have seen. It was perfect. I would have never thought about adding a winter white wash to something other than a WW2 tank. Now this was a cool project.

😁 Don't get me wrong - I'm happy with it overall. But I think there's always a healthy level of "not quite" in everything I do. It drives me to refine more, learn more, and always seek to improve. I feel like the "not quite" data is simply road signs on the highway to improvement. On this build, I learned a way to do the effect with lacquers, and I gathered data to inform how to do it better also. It's not what I was aiming at, but it was helpful nonetheless - and fun along the journey. I actually wrote this in a comment yesterday: "In a way, I think never being truly satisfied is a motivating thing. I've always felt that if I do a model and think "Wow - that is perfect", I probably need to quit the hobby and find another one! " (You know you've gone over the top when you start quoting yourself... 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️😂) Thanks again! 😊
