I have been trying to learn watercolor painting for several decades by taking classes and watching videos. That said, I have learned a TON of new techniques from just the first three of your videos I have watched! You are making it possible for me to get a look I have been seeking forever. Thank you!

It has occurred to me that the effect of the final image is "fewest, most intentional brushstrokes possible." When you get hung up on details (like I do) you can never reach this level. If you can restrain yourself to fewer brushstrokes and intentional placement and allusions to detail rather than laboring with tiny brushes, only then can you get past amateur and have your work start appearing professional. Harder than it sounds! Well done as always, Matthew.

I think it’s reminiscent of a sculpin pattern. And now I’m thinking of all the different colors this can be tied in. Thank you for another simple tie!

I like how you talk through your thought process. I'm surprised at how long the paper stays wet enough to work in. Maybe wetting the back as you do helps a lot, but it scares me, lol!

Yes, that does make a big difference. It takes some getting used to but I find it helpful to work that way.

Good looking result. I think the clouds in the reference appear more like shaded forms, in the painting they became more feathery.

Just a couple of comments. I live in central Texas and our skies are warmer and more bluer at the top and fade to a warm glow at the horizon. The cloud shadows are lighter at or near the top but darker and warmer near the bottoms.

Actually if you allow the paper to dry completely, give a clean water wash and then allow the dark highlights to take shape. In my mind it is less risky for runbacks to happen as there is no other color to interact with it.

Hey Matthew. Great demo! I was wondering if that lavender color was a Daniel Smith? And, we’re all of your sky colors Transparent? Thx! I love to paint skies. It’s so hard not to overwork them. Lol. Thanks for the tips. - Messy Mendy 👍🙏🏻🖌

Hi Mendy. Yes, I use Daniel Smith. There is a little white in the lavender. I like how it looks but some people might not like that it's less transparent.

Hey Matthew, great video! I seem to do the same when grabbing too much paint. I just started using more tube paint. Was more use to using pan cakes and was easier to grab smaller amounts of paint. Do you find it better to let the tube paint harden a bit to not have this happen as oppose to fresh from the tube? I imagine I'll get better at it the more I do it. Like anything else. Thanks!

I am interested in you palette...I have a palette for the acrylic paints, but when painting with water color, I use a white plate and just dip in into the paint, mix on the white plate and go from there.

Try to paint this upside down. You will get a much better result. This will help you to get a gradation from light to dark easier.

Not all watercolorists use neutral tint. Can you explain why you use it, please?
@keepyourshoesathedoor
@keepyourshoesathedoor 2 года назад
Neutral tint works as a gray or a tone and dulls the color. I wish I could post a link without looking like spam, but in color theory there is this thing called tone that changes the vibrancy but not the hue (color). Many artists use it to add realism to their art because realistically, most things aren’t as saturated, colorful, and beautiful in real life so it adds more realism. Many impressionist artists use neutrals or mix complementaries to get a neutral color, that would be your choice.

He saves the painting with the ground and water, but the clouds are terrible. They actually look like amatuer hour. However the water and boat and the rest is pretty good. I know nothing about all this, I have yet to do my first water colour, but I have watched a few RU-vid videos on it. His clouds should have been both more details and brighter. The top right looks like there is a fire burning and smoke going into the sky or something.
