Painting small color studies using different color schemes is a good way to think outside the box when it comes to color. It gets us away from copying what we see and makes us think more about colors that will suggest the light and depth.

Phil I love how you approach a painting. Your thought process makes so much sense. Great video here Phil. Towards the end of the video when the camera was zoomed back, you can really see the light and shadows. Looks great !

I have been useing 3 colors in my plein air painting and really helps to simplify things since I am new to plein air. I would like to expand to a warm and cool of each primary color......what colors would you suggest. Your videos are so informative....thanks for doing these!

@philstarke.artist Год назад
Your welcome Jacklyn, I would use cad yellow light and yellow ochre, cad red med and alizarin crimson, ultramarine blue and cerulean blue . That will give you a warm and cool of each primary.

Phil, wouldn't the mountains in the background be lower chroma and lighter value?
@philstarke.artist
@philstarke.artist Год назад
In this scene the mountains are sunlit and the foreground is in shadow so the mountains would stand out more. If it was all sunlit than the mountains would be more muted than the foreground
