This week was about painting. I painted the cylinders and starter engine. Unfortunately the paint for the starter engine wasn't what I was looking for...
For the in depth video of the XV 750 starter engine rebuilt I will make a seperate video. I know a lot of people look for specific info on this topic. So hang tight for that!

You need to invest in a manual impact screwdriver. Works wonders. Great video and skills!

These are JIS screws that's why they won't come out. Not phillips.

I always use the small chisel and large hammer method where the screw or bolt won't undo by the normal method...providing u have access

Cylinders are looking great! I like the matte look of the valve covers way more than the polished look btw so good call on that one.

You're English is better than mine, and I'm English but I will correct you on one thing which is more of a translation issue, it's "Starter Motor" not "Engine"... We tend to call Electric Motors, motors and diesel /petrol engine an engine. Some people from down south (London area) might call a car a "Motor" too which is confusing. Love the videos and keep them coming, it's worth all the time you put in.

If the parts are susceptable to rust...I remove all the rust then immediately spray with Red Oxide before any other paint

safer to degrease prior to sanding .. so you dont rub the grease down into the sanding marks .. might not be a MUST .. but better safe then sry in my book :)

Matte for stethical line, and about black in just cylinder part, is a good solution if you are looking for exhaust heat from this area, but for style, in my opinion, is better all the upper part of engine in black, including covers in black. PipoZaro Thanks for you comment. I've done matt black with my previous project (the scrambler). Also with the blanc coolingribs. I like it like this. Would be strange to also make the cylinder heads black...

Hey man, congrats!, you did a great job. I have seen your videos to have ideas for my oun virago. I been check a lot of videos but never find how did you paint the grey part of the engine. Which tipe of paint did you use? what brand? what color code?, etc. thak you so much for you work and advises.

It's no paint. It's wetblasted (sandblasted but a special way). Also called 'Vapor blasting'.

I Use VHT paint. I know It's an American brand so you can buy it probably everywere. Hello Chiefpep, did you have to remove the old paint of the engine or you painted over the old paint? if you did removed it, how did you do it? because i don't have access to blast machines.

There was no paint on it. I wetblasted it (not myself, I outsourced it). I have specific video's in that topic.

Just take them off and clean them very well. With thinner, degreaser and then with sanding paper...

My apologies, i have a 1981 Virago 750 , and i was just referring to the 2 bolts on the Starter , and the Bolts used on the Alternator Cover. I Appreciate the responce.

Aha. Well, the bolts in the starter engine are exactly the same as the original only not Philips head but Allan heads. These are m6x120mm. The rest is a combination, depending where they go. Combination of M6x22, M6x14, M6x30, M6x40 various sorts. You just measure the originals. A lot of people ask me this question and therefore I give really detailed info in mijn questions and answer video about how to source these bolts. Congrats on the efforts and results, but have you asked yourself how will any additional layer of paint/type of paint affect the heat dissipation that is of greatest importance on an air cooled engine during its operation? I also like the black cylinders on these bikes, but have cooling issued during summertime and that concern me most. If I would to spray mine black I would use not normal paint, but something like this and pray it is not only marketing but actually will help engine to run cooler: www.cerakotehightemp.com/finishes/P-202Q/arctic-black-oven-cure/ +1 on the non polished alu parts, the matte looks way better and will save you ton of work and following need of attention.

Ivo Giev Thanks for your comment and concerns! VHT Engine enamel is the most used for engines. Specially designed for this. All will be good!

Hi, maybe you didn't understand me correctly or I didn't express myself clearly. I was not concerned about paint peeling off at some point of its life, I am concerned how this paint will affect the cooling of the air cooled engine. The link I sent was for a paint that improves heat transfer, the VHT obviously is opposite since it is normal heat resistant paint therefor worsening the heat transfer. Please correct me if I am wrong and Happy New Year :)

Why not a different color like orange or other color on the cylinder block?

Marlhon Joseph Lim Engines should be their original color and otherwise matt black in my opinion... I never use colors on frame or engine. Guess it's very personal though.
