Kathleen is the first artist I have watched who has explained the reason for using a staining paint. I've tried avoiding them but now I have better understanding when to use them.
I saw your comment before I watched, so I was curious about this. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, as I am not sure I''d have really caught it otherwise, because yeah, why have I never heard this before? That was so helpful!
Having admired many of Kathleen's finished masterpieces, it was an absolute pleasure to watch her do a complete painting. Simply beautiful. Thank you, Eric & Kathleen.
Really great tutorial. Some simple theories that will add so much to my practice. The triad, staining colors, and of her expertise in laying layers of glaze wet on wet as it dries. Love it!
Absolutely fascinating. I also paint using triads, but I have never seen anyone paint a portrait like this before - love it. Learnt so much today. Thank you.
Wow that is so beautiful. She knows exactly how much water with her colour. And she knows the degree of pigment lightening. Certainly an expert enjoyed so much.
LoveThis sweet granddaughter. So I never seen K Giles work ..As a oil & pastel artist myself I’m getting into some W/C . She is an amazing artist .WOW ! Her work is the very best I’ve seen . Still life, Portraits, Her self portrait is so incredibly beautiful. Love to see her teach in home state of Idaho .. Thank you Eric you’re doing absolutely awesome job showcasing Artist we never knew about !!
What a great artist!!! Such a beautiful faultless painting of a sweet little girl. This is my favourite painting demonstration so far. Thank you from Pat Barry, Firefly NSW Australia
Watching from Germany and being so impressed 😮 what an accomplished artist she is and knows exactly how the water and the paint responds. And doing it with the triad was such a great lesson to watch thank you ☺️
Excellent demo - thank you to Kathleen and you! Watching from Poros Island, Greece, where I am getting back to portraiture in watercolor again. Really appreciate the details on materials. I've been using 300 'gr' instead of 300LB D'arches paper. Aha! Waiting for my order to arrive this week!
I’m new to watercolor. I’m astonished by the beautiful portrait Ms Giles created with only 3 colors. I really have sooo much to learn. Thank you for this video. I’m so glad I have scrolled and found your channel!
I was hoping you would go over the January class or program again, but I'll just search through the video because the instruction sounds intriguing. As for the portrait, I learned so much; thank you to Kathleen Giles, who is incredibly talented!
Much to take in, thank you! One suggestion would be to show the reference photo as you're making the painting, it's an insight into your artistic choices and what you do with what you see.. 👌😎👍
This is an absolutely fabulous demonstration, one of the best, if not THE best I have seen! I have subscribed to Kathleen's own channel, but I cannot fathom why she has so few subscribers - she is head and shoulders above the rest of the RU-vid artists.
Amazing relaxed and meaningful strokes. Love interview Eric and Mi. Giles is grossly beautiful in words and work. It was so much fu to be in awe. Thank you for sharing
Oct 2023 learned so much about using the traid, thank you so much for having Kathleen Giles on your show , the degree of proficiency she has is what i espire to.
How beautiful! Tasha Kidd, here, and I watched this great demonstration from Lafayette, Indiana. Thank you both for your talents and time. Much appreciated!
Eric I saw your two interviews this week, and I think you’re both a great interviewer and a wonderful guest. I could see how your leadership skills showed through in helping the flow of the conversations.
Amazing! I'm afraid to paint my grandchildren because it's difficult to paint those sweet, soft childish faces, but your portrait is so incredible that I decided to give it a try!
Kathleen, thank you for this fabulous class, and may I ask what light you mentioned you use in your studio? Also, have you always stood to paint? Thank you. And thanks Eric, for this amazing channel!
Ms Giles, This technique is so interesting. I've watched the video twice now and probably will again. I like the three color palette and the layering and am anxious to try it. I, too, use Arches 300 much of the time because I'm not crazy about stretching paper. I assume you use various reds, blues and yellows, depending on the subject. Is their a base triad of primary colors to begin with?
Kathleen, this was an amazing experience! I love the triad of colors experience. It simplifies things when doing a portrait. What was the pearline color that you mixed with Pt halo blue in your last step? Thank you.
It really made me look. When she was doing the initial wash of yellow! It looked green on my screen. Does anyone have this problem? I never had this problem before on my iPad. If they said yellow, it looked yellow. Glad to have found you. Retta from Indiana, blessings
Watching from Georgia. I couldn’t watch live but this is really helpful. Kathleen mentioned not wanting to see the pencil lines. What about artist grade watercolor pencil rather than graphite? Maybe in a matching color?
Kathleen Giles - you mentioned Turner Permanent Yellow Light as your yellow - I see a Permanent Lemon or a Permanent Yellow in their line of paint, but can’t find Permanent Yellow Light. Which would you recommend?
Here’s living proof that watching tutorials from anybody under, o say, forty years of age, is largely pointless if you really want to learn from an artist that has done the reps and knows their stuff. Although of course this young lady is only twenty one, and so the exception to the rule! Masterful, and watercolour is such a difficult medium. The information on staining colours was gold!
