Great semi-instructional video! Love the blues. I may have a tip, which is that when you start with the background, you don't have to go back masking up the artwork to paint a clean background. Or, if you prefer to do the background last (for whatever reason) you can also save the 'inside-part' of the first stencil that you cut and use that to cover up the artwork. Keep them coming sir!

This kind of painting has always captivated me, as I do airbrush painting, I have to create stencils to create certain looks for the finished product. One suggestion for you that may help; use the clear styrene sheets to make your stencils with. It will do many things for you, mainly last longer than the paper,not fray, and will stay flat more readily than paper. Your lines will be crisp and clean. Just my two cents worth. 😎 I would love to see you do other pieces using this technique, that may be more of a traditional figure study. I think it would be interesting to see the outcome!

Hey Slew, i ve heard a very good idea on old stencils, you can put tiny magnets on the back on canvas and on the stencil to lock the small wobbly pieces in place, its kinda clean coz u dont have to finger push around all the time. A bit more time consuming but works wonders:)

Thanks for sharing another great tutorial! Since you're using sort of a 4 color printing process, have you thought about cutting registration marks in your stencils to help aligning them? Something like a + in the upper right and lower left, cut into all the stencils, that you can align to a printed + taped to the canvas.

it is super bad to get spraypaint on you... wear gloves and a mask kid. your skin is an organ, not a protective layer. spraypaint is super caustic and seeps through your eyes and skin. do you, but don't be surprised if you start having bladder control or neurological issues down the road... you got a lot of followers listening to you tho...

@madameberry

Had the thought that it'd be interesting to grab a few extra colors (like a pink and teal within each value level or something) and make a gradient within the stencils. That might be a little more tough, but might look neat idk.

Super interesting video, gonna have to check out your premium video! One question, why not paint the solid color background before doing the stencils so you didn't have to later mask and then cut out the edges? (Only asking because I super hate/stress the detail part of cutting out masking. And would prefer to skip unless there is a reason to need to do so.)
@LilaSatori
@LilaSatori 2 года назад
Guess it´s the guide lines (grid he drew at the beginning) for the different stencils so you know where to place each color, otherwise you wouldn´t see those and the layers would be off. Cutting looked scary though, looks like you could cut through the canvas easily.
@justinbanks2380
@justinbanks2380 2 года назад
@@LilaSatori Yeah the knife on canvas looks stressful. The grid lines thing makes sense, but I'd think you could still do the lines over the background with pencil then erase, or even use ink and then just hit a quick blast of paint over that part to cover up, as the lines are away from the age, you wouldn't need to do careful masking, could just hold a piece of paper over while spraying. IDK, experiment and personal preference I suppose. The thought of doing it the way he did would cause me worry.
@jimhresco1728
@jimhresco1728 2 года назад
@@justinbanks2380 Your way would work just fine. Instead of pencil use small tape arrows to make alignments. No erasing just remove the tape arrows.

I love your stencil works, it is so satisfying to watch you peeling of the stencils and seeing the different layers bringing the piece to life! Did you try painting over your stencils with acrylics instead of using spray paint? I'm pretty curious how that would work out I'm just learning to paint with acrylics and combining different techniques. The idea of bringing stencil work into the mix is pretty exciting!

Hey - I bought your video on this topic, and though I haven't had time to watch it, I created my first laser cut stencil from a self portrait photo this afternoon! I laughed so hard the spray painting silly stencils turned into something that totally looks like me! I had to write some software to convert the color reduced photos to SVGs, and I feel that that's missing the artistic point of the exercise. But just the same, thanks for the massive inspiration!
