Restoring the cedar siding and exterior pine wood trim on a 101 year old house. Full restoration of original wood siding with scraping, sanding, priming, and painting. Replaced rotten sections of trim and tightened everything back up. Very labor intensive, but worth it in the end.

Great Video, This explanation of house painting is exact. The steps you have taken are exactly what I did 20 years ago and still is holding up. I was younger then and now turning 73 I will be refreshing some sections this summer. Lots of work, but worth it.. Thanks for the refresher course. Old lady in MA

Wow awesome job Katie. I have done a repair and paint on an 110 year old house and I can really appreciated the time and hard work it takes to do a job to a high standard. And don't those old homes look so smart when freshly painted. Also I discovered that keeping up the cleaning maintenance was a great help keeping the house looking cared for. I don't think I would ever recommended using power washers on the old homes unless super low pressure. Great job.

Super helpful to watch your process and attention to detail. Thanks for sharing! My house is a 135 year old Queen Anne Victorian and has recently had the old vinyl siding removed. My biggest challenge in thinking about painting it myself is reaching the highest gables. Glad to see you used a man lift! You’ve given me a good dose of motivation.
@olsenkated
@olsenkated Год назад
I bet your house is gorgeous! And maybe a diamond in the rough if it has just been uncovered. I used to be afraid of heights, now I just respect them. The man lift was so much easier on the body. And my feet are thankful! Standing on a ladder all day is definitely hard on the feet - they aren’t destined to stand on such a small surface. Best of luck on your project - I would love to see photos! They simply don’t build houses like they used to.

Katie, what a fantastic job you did on this! I grew up in Oshkosh so as soon as I saw the Kwik Trip I knew this had to be Wisco :) I am doing the same thing starting this fall and continuing through next year. We have a 1950's built home that was originally sided with cedar siding 12" reveal. That was covered in the 1960s with aluminum siding... and I've been pulling that off and finding the siding still in very good to decent shape. I plan on doing exactly what you have done. Sadly there are no Menards in Upstate NY, where I live now. I'll be using Sherwin WIlliams paint and an oil-based primer too. Go Packers and Go Brewers!

Katie, You inspired me 😀, as I have been thinking of painting the exterior of our home. I am a 60 yr old women who is a DIY kind of gal. I saw our neighbor paint the exterior of his home on his own. He did the prep work, and paint work by sections. He is a single man who works full time, so he did if on weekends. It was a long process but the results were so amazing. Again your an inspiration Katie....great job👍 One day at a time!

That is so awesome! It is hard work, but that makes it that much more rewarding when it’s complete. Truly transforming for the home and it made me slow down and appreciate the small things in life at the same time. Hope your project goes well! I would love to see before and after photos.

You got it sooo easy!!!! My house is 90 years old with the thickest old lead paint ever!! I had to experiment with so many different tools and I’m 2 years into this project. I had to work off of free time from work and school! I’m just happy I’m almost done!

in the future you can use an oscillating tool with a scraper attachment to make ultra short work of the scraping 👍

It turned out amazing! I really admire your dedication and pouring your soul into your home! That is what makes it a home and not just a house.❤ Just I have always been wondering way in us most of the houses are painted, when it's such a pain in the a$$ every couple of years? We in Europe, if we have wood out or inside most of the times it is just impregnated.
@olsenkated

Thank you! This house is definitely starting to feel more like home. A lot of people don’t maintain their wood siding in the US and it goes neglected. That would be so cool to see the difference between the US and Europe styles of siding!

Thank so much! It just takes a bit of patience and elbow grease. On days when I get frustrated I just think back to the lifestyle that people lived 100 - 200 years ago. In so many ways we are lucky with all the modern conveniences we have today. Yet so many people lack in taking pride of who they are and what they do. Enjoy your project and I hope it goes well!

that was an amazing transformation and I know how much work it is I painted my 1930's house about 10 years ago. My garage is old too with many coats of rough paint and needs to be done again. What was the scraper again that your Dad recommended?? thanks!

Thanks! How is your paint holding up from 10 years ago? I’m hoping that this process helps make it last longer and proves to be worth it all. It was a purdy premium 2 1/2” carbide scraper.

Wow that is a great job! I am heat stripping our porch banisters now. The paint is 1/4 thick and it is rough going. Now if only I could figure out how to strip the sides of the spindles which are just straight wood.
@cbrinsfi

Doing the same thing right now - using a heat gun and scraper first, and then die grinder with flap disks to sand off the remainder. Tough job anyway you do it.
@1065Olivia

@@cbrinsfi I just wish the infrared heater would get to the sides of spindles. They are too close together so I would have to use my heat gun and cant find respirator for lead paint. Side note some children apparently practiced their cursive writing on the bare wood back in 1903 before it was painted the first time.

Whoa! That would have been so cool to uncover. Also annoying that there was now writing on the wood. But what a cool piece of history that was hidden for so many years.

My house is around the same age. I just tested it for lead and it came back positive.

Most paint that is that age will have lead. My advice would be to do your research for your local regulations and safety concerns.
