Thank you for mentioning how you feel about people saying that they admire your smile when things aren’t going well. I’m grateful that you clarified that it is a coping mechanism and that the compliment is a social norm for brushing away mental pain and fatigue. It never occurred to me to think of it that way. This provides much food for thought.

I feel that my boyfriend just got out of prison for drugs after a year and a half... he was out less than 3 weeks... and overdosed and died in his mother's arms on mother's day weekend, almost my whole family has died since April 2019 when my mom overdosed and died in my arms... watercolor has been the greatest outlet for me or any art really.. I don't have to be great I just want it to be fun. I really don't have anyone left.. except my dog Thapnk God Almighty he is my rock the reason I haven't given up. It's amazing how helpful it can be to just be needed and relied upon. It's just enough motivation to not give up.Dogs are way more needy than cats so I would urge anyone to go and adopt a pup in need and see it change their life 11:58

I once had a therapist tell me to treat “should” like a bad word and to question where the idea comes from. To me, a long time subscriber, the videos you SHOULD be making are the ones that heal you and that you enjoy right now. The other stuff can wait 😊

Mine did similar! She said to catch the word and reframe it as “it might be nice if”, but it’s not required. 😊

Same! She used to say, "stop shoulding on yourself". I learnt to say "I want to" instead of "I should".

I try to change "should" to "could." That seems to give me some power in the choice of action. Oh, and I find it relieves a lot of guilt for me as I've given myself permission to not do something I don't really want to do at that moment.

Those who can move on "stronger" from trauma normally are those who have the support and resources to heal and grow from setbacks. When you're already at your limit due to other consistent microtraumas (especially medical ones) those resources are being spent on the daily just dealing with life. Never feel you are lesser for not being able to "bounce back" from things. Everyone heals and recovers are different rates and so much of it has to do with how much of a load you were already carrying rather than anything intrinsic. Sometimes, just putting one foot in front of the other to keep moving takes all you've got left. That you were able to pull off a move in such a short time is incredible. And more and more workplaces are offering temporary disability, which can be used for mental health reasons as well. Makes me think maybe getting a predictable income job might be doable in the future...

I’m so sorry Denise. I suffer chronic pain and it is hard for people who don’t have chronic pain. I feel it is easy to find people to be dismissive when they cannot relate to you. Sometimes it is all you can say I’m breathing. I wish you pain easement, good fortune, and the best future anyone has ever experienced. Be safe out there.

I always enjoy this kind of video and wish they did better so you'd feel free to make more of them. I'm also self-employed and can empathize with the challenges. I deal with so much guilt any time I take time "off", but it's also incredibly unhealthy to spend most of my waking hours engaged with my job in one way or another. I've been feeling extremely overwhelmed lately and finally just shut off work for a bit. I'm doing the bare minimum and trusting that it's *okay* to take some time off to focus on resting and healing. I'm also not thankful for any of my trauma (or chronic illness), but so grateful for the handful of friends who have supported me through tough times.

I remember when I was going through my lowest moments. When I smiled, it was out of spite against all the things that were going against me. On the inside however, I was constantly brimming with anger when I usually never get angry. I felt like I couldn't properly talk about my issues because I didn't really know anyone who experienced the same as me. So the whole "oh you're so admirable for smiling through it all" and your sentiments on it are very recognisable. Anyway, thank you for this video. It's a lovely art piece and calming to watch and listen to. I'm sorry you have to deal with all this, it must be exhausting. Especially with the struggle of being self-employed and having little to no safety net. You deserve a break from everything, even while it's hard to get. Much love and wishing you calm and a safe space to recover ❤️❤️

My CPTSD soared, after all that once i contracted Covid and still have long Covid issues ( much better) and at some point i thought i may just expire... Watercolor is my great saviour and i rediscovered it sheerly by serendipity.. And then i feel, we have a Higher power taking care of us somehow! Thanks you for speaking about it...yes its a coping mechanism for us in many ways and its not always what it seems on the outside ..❤❤❤

You've been through a lot and that takes its toll. I always rephrased that hated cliche of 'what doesn't kill you makes you stronger' to 'what doesn't kill me makes me more neurotic' which seems more realistic. My lack of success in the art world weighs me down periodically, but I keep at it. Why? Because art is something I love and it's sometimes therapeutic (plus I don't rely on it for my income), so I keep on with it. World events such as mass shootings, war, animal abuse and the intensely divided US also weighs heavily. Hope things turn around for you (and all of us) with brighter days ahead.

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and talent with us. You sound a lot like my partener. We both make our living from our business and have for the past 15+ years and also see the hardships that have come to us all. Even though we live in Nova Scotia, Canada, I come from Chicago so I have ties to both countries. I tend to be the positive one of the two of us, but I have felt flat these past several months because of the 'state of the world'. (I will call it that and leave it at that.) I just want you to know that you aren't alone in your feelings and that we do really and truly care. I find that what helps most is taking care of YOU first. It isn't easy, but as you know, you can't force creativity. if you feel you must post here, post the swatches. I love swatching when I am not feeling creative. I hope you feel better soon. I had water damage (major) when I lived in Chicago and the anxiety does follow you for a long, long time. Much care to you, Denese. We are cheering for you.

Thank you, Denise. Keeping brain health ("mental" health has such a stigma) as an open conversation is critical. Did you know that the philosopher, Friedrich Nietzsche penned the phrase, "that which does not kill you makes you stronger" lost his grip on reality and died in a "mental hospital" (as such in his day)? The phrase is such a platitude. Empathy. Yes. Much more of that.

I'm so sorry about your emergency move. We are moving in two weeks and I have been going out of my mind with stress even though we had a generous timeline and enough money to do it. It's completely understandable that you have PTSD from that first move. My first move ever was also full of trauma, and I still dream about it, even though it happened 15 years ago. Thank you for talking about your feelings and experiences. I know it's a pretty vulnerable thing to do, especially since so many people are acting as if the pandemic didn't happen. It was (and still is) traumatic as hell and people are really afraid of sitting with those feelings. It's important and healthy to do so, even if it is uncomfortable. I am grateful to have a chosen family and a therapist who I can talk to about this. I wish everyone had that same support structure. You're absolutely right, sometimes bad things just happen and it just sucks. And knowing that has been a lot more helpful to me than trying to find some kind of meaning in it all. I have so much empathy for your situation. I know we don't know each other very well, but I think you are cool and kind and I love that you care about things so much. I am hoping that the many people I see here in the comments expressing their support, including myself, is encouraging to you. Feel free to reach out any time.

I am so sorry. I can't even imagine watching water just piling up in my house. It happened in the basement before, where we store a lot of things and water just kept coming and coming and it was terrifying! I can't even imagine if it had been the rest of my house! Moving takes a toll on us. . I don't care what anyone says. It's hard. Period. I'm glad you are finally getting settled in. I can so relate with the depression part of things. I fought so hard to get to where I was and the last few months... It's almost like I lost my footing and tumbled even further down than I used to be. I guess kind of like a drug relapse. You know how they say when you relapse you pick up right where you left off if not worse? Just like that. I struggle. A lot. I'm just trying to be as patient as I can with myself. I'm taking my time to truly feel better instead of pretending. I will keep you in my thoughts Denise Be kind to yourself. We re in this together.

We could talk for hours about putting on a happy face and trying to at least look ok even when we're not...so many layers. Even if it's a coping mechanism, all coping mechanisms are learned skills. It is worthy of admiration when anyone finds something that helps them keep going when they want to stop. It doesn't mean you're ok or you don't need help, but you're doing the best you can, just like all of us.

This video truly hit close to home :') I have struggled with poor mental health for much of life and only in recent years have i slowly started to get better, but the bad days seems almost worse in comparison to the good. Funnily enough today I woke up feeling bad and my body betraying me once again so noticing this video in my youtube feed really had a great timing. I absolutely love your channel and it really helped me find my way while getting into watercolours. It is sad to hear about your struggles, but i am glad you are talking about them. I really appreciated this video and your honesty. And what you said about smiling struck a chord with me. Having gone through my own life stuff and learning a lot about mindfulness and thinking deeply and making sure I acknowledge what I’m feeling and thinking and not just shoving everything “negative” aside, I’ve thought a lot about how the lyrics of the song Smile are sweet and well-meaning but not actually healthy or helpful. “Smile though your heart is aching, smile even though it’s breaking… Light up your face with gladness, hide every trace of sadness, although a tear may be ever so near… That’s the time you must keep on trying, Smile, what’s the use in crying?…” The problem with that is it’s like painting a pretty picture on top of a hole in the wall in order to make the appearance better and hide the issue. Painting a smile on your face when you don’t feel like smiling is more to help people around you feel more comfortable than to make yourself feel better. Yes, being able to smile for real is so wonderful and healing, but painting on a smile and covering up your pain/difficulties/depression/anxiety etc will do so much more harm than good in the long run. In my lowest, darkest time 4 years ago, I look at photos of myself back then, and though I’m smiling in every photo, my eyes are dead in each one. No joy, no spark, no light… just a painted on smile. It’s very hard for me to see those photos now but at least I can compare them to photos now and see the genuine smile in my eyes now. This video resonated with me. I have schizophrenia and bipolar in one disorder, as well as PTSD and anxiety. Mental health when dealing with mental illness feels like an exhausting uphill battle of some sort. I go to a NAMI peer support group in Austin, and one of the principles of support they have is "we will never give up hope". I personally like this because it doesn't say that things are or should be easy and positive. But I have to hold onto hope because sometimes it's all I have. I'm sorry this was a bit rambling, I don't think clearly most of the time. I hope your everything improves and your mind has some rest. I appreciate your hard work and honesty, even when it isn't all sunshine. Truly wishing the best for you.

Ugh, I feel this so much Sterling, haha. Along with what I mentioned in the video, words like "brave" are also really upsetting to me to receive as "compliments." Nah man, it's not brave to deal with one thing after another like this. Waking up everyday is literally the only option to the much darker alternative. Just trying to cling to my last shreds of hope over here 😅

Denise- a positive note is that in the midst of all this angst you have created some lovely watercolor products with Da Vinci Paints which I am saving to acquire. I got the Embrace Opacity set, but haven't bought your larger set yet. But I will. Try to feel better if you can.

Hullo Denise, I am glad that you were able to get a video done and posted! I am believing that no matter what you post, it must be better than nothing! For you or the algorithm getting something finished just feels good better than not! I myself enjoyed the painting and message. I would love to send you a spoonful of sugar to help the medicine go down and throw in my drawerful of spoons to help you get through the day! Ha! Like any of us has a drawerful of spoons! But I am wishing this for you. Hang in there as we all say and be safe , take care of yourself and enjoy your day! Having a happy life is the best revenge on those who wish ill for you and those around you.

Denise, I’m stealing your phrase “hopeful energy.” And no pressure on myself, but I want that phrase to inspire me. I appreciate your candor and painting more than I can say. As someone who has lived with major depressive disorder for a lifetime (I’m now 76 yo) I relate especially to having to present a facci falsa in every situation. It’s kind of weird to do, but, it’s self-protective to avoid well-meaning people trying to fix me when all I need is understanding and companionship. I started a YT channel 2 yrs ago and still haven’t found my voice and creative persona so it sits idle. Thank you for sharing this and I hope it also helps you through the rough patch.

Christine, your comment about putting on a face to avoid having to explain yourself to others resonates with me so much. That process can be exhausting when you're already at the bottom. I have found it so hard to be creative these past several years. I'm so glad you're being kind to yourself along the way.

@@InLiquidColor Thank you for your reply. And I agree about it being exhausting. But, it’s also a sign of great strength. We learn to keep showing up regardless of how emotionally strained we feel. Here’s a thought. Instead of saying we’re depressed, let’s reframe that label and say we’re “emotionally divergent.” Wishing all the best to you! Hugs.

This is really lovely and validating. Thanks for sharing it with us. You’re right that sometimes trauma is just trauma, and we didn’t “need” it to “learn something.” The platitudes that imply we’re better off, even in some small way, because of some sort of trauma are so hurtful and insensitive. I wish you peace and healing. Again, thanks for sharing your voice with us. 💜

Thank you for your honesty. I agree with you people tell me but you have such a great attitude with everything you face with your chronic illness. No it’s a mask that makes everyone else feel better not to make me feel better. The world truly doesn’t ask how you are doing because the want to know. They ask because it’s supposed to be polite. Please leave me out of your manners then because if you don’t wNt to know don’t ask me. I hope that things start to feel better for you. Because there are really those of us that care how others feel. I’m sorry for your recent trauma and hope that things look up for you really soon. Soft hugs from me to you.

Ugh, I feel this so hard Rebecca. masking for mental health. Masking for chronic pain. It's to make others feel better and/or to not have to waste the energy explaining ourselves to others. Ya know, I heard in another RU-vid video recently that "hey how are you" as a greeting is a very American thing. The person in the video was from another country and was quite confused with how they were supposed to answer that to a stranger. With that perspective, I'm now trying to process that as a simple greeting and not a question. Doesn't make the insincerity of that being our default greeting any better, but helps to process it :)

Super late viewing (I’m going through my own stuff - I really hate summer), and I wanted to comment on working for someone else while going through trauma/spoons/depression. For me, having someone else I’m accountable to allows me to ‘turn off’ the part of me that would spend all day doom scrolling. It’s a form of compartmentalization. Is it healthy? Hell no, but it’s the most financially efficient way I’ve found to cope. I know me. If I wasn’t accountable to someone I would spiral, so I would like to give you a high five for staying somewhat focused during your trials. I know how difficult it can be.

I have been on anti-depressants for many years but recently hit a bad patch I couldn't drag myself out of. My doctor recommended I try TMS - trans-cranial magnetic stimulation. It was almost miraculous for me. I can't believe it isn't more widely known, since it has excellent results for many people. I suggest doing some research on it to decide if it might help you. My insurance (Medicare) paid for it. Good luck and thanks for sharing.

This is interesting -when I had my foot reconstructed/bone graft the last time (and this was back in 1993) they used magnetic stimulation to mend the bone tissue and get it to graft. I had multiple reconstructions before that point and none of them worked out the way that surgery did and I'd never been told to use the magnetic device before then- it was totally above board, too- it wasn't some alternative practitioner (I know that's some people's approach to health, but it's not mine.) I had to go through the hospital and the stim/ultrasound manufacturers to get my device. I do a lot of study and reading on neurological health, and I'm surprised I haven't heard of this.

Hi Denise, I just wanted to say thank you for sharing. It’s nice to know that we can start to talk about this in the open and not hide it behind close doors iTunes suffer from major depressive disorder and it helps not to feel alone. Also I don’t give two shits about the RU-vid algorithm. The people who love you and know you will spread the word about you and people who do find you I’m positive or stay just because the algorithm doesn’t like you doesn’t mean you people don’t

Thank you for sharing this. It is so important for us all to be more open about our feelings so that we as humans don't just assume everyone around us is handling life just fine and we are the only ones suffering (like I did myself for many years... now I am a very verbal advocate for mental health). Talking about our feelings is how we heal. It's how we find the empathy and compassion for others that you talked about. Making videos like these is another step in the right direction for a sadly slow-moving culture shift, especially on the internet. I really enjoyed this video and beautiful painting. Any chance you can get a top floor apartment next time? 😅 (Totally joking)

I wanted a top floor unit so bad 🤣 unfortunately I'm on the first floor now (it's all they had available), but it's better than being sandwiched on the second out of three at least! That will definitely be something I look for the next time around when I have choice again!

Thank you thank you for acknowledging that some things just fuckin’ suck. Overly positive people annoy me and I’m always skeptical of those types. Especially those that say “God is just testing you!” (I’m an atheist too- so I can’t stand that even more lol). Some things just suck. That’s it. There’s no lesson to be learned in every single thing that happens. And I really struggle coping sometimes.
