Thank you. I have boxes of my father in law wooden carvings that he never got to paint so watching this helps. I want to finish them for grandkids and great grandkids and it helps me feel close to him.
I just recently found your RU-vid video on the Santa. I am so amazed by the difference in my carving after watching this over what I did on my own two years ago. It has helped a great deal.
Thank you for the detailed video on this carving. The step by step instructions helped answer many questions I have been trying to find answers to. Looking forward to checking out your channel.
Fantastic video, picked up quite a few very helpful pointers. You do an amazing job of explaining what and why you're doing the things that you do. Very appreciative of you sharing your knowledge on this platform. Well done.
Your mixing on glass is a game-changer for me! I'd been using those white plastic paint palettes and did not have the level of control and visual feedback that diluting on a glass plate provides. Thanks!
I made a bunch of these for my family and couldn't believe how great they looked, and they were blown away. Thank you for a great tutorial and making it easy. A belated Merry Christmas.
Hi Blake, I’m so happy to see so many talented woodcarvers on RU-vid these days. I’ve been carving for 35 years and do competition birds. New subscriber
Fantastic Mark! Thanks for the feedback! You can also find a lot on the International Association of Wood Carving page. We've done quite a few meetings with a lot of talented carvers. Thanks for giving it a look!
Wowza on Santa,, 👍 I have learned so much from your videos,,, thank you so much for taking your time and explaining the process,, those are the Santa's I'm doing now,, " wife wants them" lol I can't do the beard as good as yours,, but I'm going to keep at it.. again thank you stay safe
Just watched Blake ... I really enjoyed seeing your process of Santa painting. You do a great job of explaining the what, where, and why of each step. Learned a lot today ...
I just watched all the Santa ornament videos and subscribed. Excellent teaching and beautiful results! You’re very good at explaining without overkill. Just right! Keep ‘em comin’ when you can. I know it’s a lot of work creating the videos...far more than creating the carving. Kudos to you for all the effort to share with us👍 Coffee’s on the way😉
Thanks my friend! I appreciate the support and the kind comments. I hope the videos are beneficial and the tips can be applied to any carving. Thanks again for your generous support!
Hi there Blake. How long do you let your carvings dry after dabbing off the boiled linseed oil? It seems like you don't wait too long, but I've been told by a couple to wait a few days before painting after applying the BLO. Thanks and love your videos!
Hey! I usually just paint them wet right after I get the excess BLO off the carving. It actually helps the paint blend and gives you a good finish. You can wait for it to dry, but it is not necessary.
thank you for the videos. How long do you let the BLO dry before you paint? If one was to leave it dry overnight will that effect the painting process?
With BLO, once you put it on and wipe off the excess, you can go ahead and start painting your washes right on the wet BLO. It will help the colors to absorb and blend well without any issues.
Amazing job! So now it is time to hang it, how do you display that or intend it to be displayed? Do you put some kind of hanger on the back to put sting on so you can hang it from a tree or window?
Tim, I usually go to an arts store and purchase some eye hooks. You can also get them on amazon. Screw them in the top of the hat and add just a dab of super glue to hold it in place. At that point you can hang from a tree or hang in a window. Hope this helps! Thanks so much for following along!
@@lunsfordcarvings Thank you, I know we are getting in the weeds but how about using a keyhole router bit or countersinking something in the back, the only reason I mention it is taking that thickness into account or for balancing it out when it hangs. I think the only thing this awesome set of videos lacks is a foolproof and elegant way to hang them. I can't wait to try this project - thanks again for all the videos on it and the detail. PS - I did send coffee... LOL
@@tnyberg67 Thanks so much for the coffee! It is much appreciated! Yes, the keyhole router bit would work. It really depends on where you want to hang it. I use the eye hooks just to hang on a tree, but there are a bunch of different options you can try to make it your own. I look forward to seeing your creations!
Wonderful video and very helpful ! ! Thank you. Now that the carving is painted, how do you finish it off? I know some leave it just painted. Others paint or spray some clear coating of some kind or maybe some kind of wax. How do you finalize the piece?
@@lunsfordcarvings Fantastic! ! I have done similarly though I'm less practiced with the Wax. I very much appreciate your videos, the way you explain and demonstrate. I have learned much. Please keep sharing ! !
Usually I will just screw an eye hook into the top of the hat, and then tie some fishing twine through the loop to hang it on the tree. The eye hooks work well and stay in the wood good.
@@lunsfordcarvings I have used an eye hook before but sometimes the carving wouldn't hang vertical. I have done several Santa ornaments but have relieved the back of the carving, almost cleaning it out a little like a canoe, to lighten them. This likely makes them "lean" when using the eye hook. I'm thinking the weight would be more balanced leaving the back flat. Once again, thank you for responding and being so kind in your approach and in your sharing.
It usually takes me from 1.5 to 2 hours to carve one start to finish before painting. They are a really fun carve because you get to work on shadowing, eyes, and hair flow.
@@lunsfordcarvings yeah I have watched the videos a couple times. I really like the one you did and painted the hat American flag. Thanks for the videos.
