Welcome to the very first video in a short series where I am going to show you how to create seamless repeating patterns from your watercolor paintings (or other artwork!) in Photoshop ✨
In this first video, I'll walk you through my process of painting and digitizing my artwork in preparation for pattern making. I'll talk through some of my top tips for painting with your repeating pattern in mind, and I'll show you how to bring your artwork into your computer using your phone or a scanner.
The next video in this series will show you how to remove the paper background in Photoshop, digitally touch up your artwork, and isolate your motifs. Be sure to subscribe to make sure you don't miss out on the rest of this series!
Thanks so much for watching 🥰

Not sure if it was mentioned yet but I know with IPhones you can turn on the camera grid and it will sense if you are holding the phone level to your art work when its laying on a flat surface. I love that feature! Great for photographing flatlays too!

Thank you for your scanning tips! I usually just clean all dust in Photoshop and it takes quite of time.

Stay tuned for my next video -- I learned a great tip for speeding up the inevitable dust removal step in Photoshop! I used to basically manually erase everything... but not anymore!

Such a great video, I normally scan mine at 600 dpi, great trip using a dry brush to get hairs off before you scan, j have a Dalmatian and a Bordercollie so always have heaps of hairs around and I bet if they could get on the table they would be interested like your beautiful cats do. I need to see if I can get those watercolour pans in Australia, I remember when first thinking about getting watercolour I saw them from Amazon overseas but ended up getting Winsor and Newton.

I’ve done 600 dpi and had good success!! Also lol the pet owner / painter experience is truly universal 😂. I love it hahah. I haven’t used Windsor and Newton, but have heard great things!! I think that the most important thing is just using paint you like the look of, especially when the end goal is to digitize it.

Do you have a suggestion for someone who has never used Photoshop, or done any digital artwork, to learn how to do so? This is a huge road block for me. Thank you!

That’s exactly where I was when I started!! Photoshop was sooooo overwhelming for me at the beginning. It took many months of following tutorials and fiddling around for me to feel comfortable using it to be honest haha. If you have Skillshare, I really recommend Cat Coquillette’s course on watercolor surface pattern design! I know she also has a more general intro to Photoshop course. I haven’t taken that one, but I did take her intro to Procreate course and found it really useful ☺️

Just wondering whether you have been able to monetize these designs, and make a living?? Is it really worth the effort?

Hey there! That’s my goal! I’ve been slowly working on building my portfolio and haven’t actually pitched my artwork yet, but my plan is to document and share my whole journey. In my “master plan” my goal is to finish my portfolio by the end of the year and start pitching at the beginning of next year! In terms of whether it’s worth the effort - for me, anything that brings me so much joy is worth it to me! Whether it’s financially profitable… stay tuned to find out!

@@pepostudios Maybe you could do another video about pitching a portfolio of fabrics. I've been struggling to find a way to do that without being scammed.....
@pepostudios
@pepostudios 10 месяцев назад
@@user-sn7ne1hl1q I definitely will do that!! My goal is to pitch to 100 companies by the end of 2024, so hopefully I’ll have lots of experience to learn from and share with you all in the coming months 🤞🏼
