Fun trick with faces: on a lot of them, painting eyes is optional. Especially for table use, eyes are more or less invisible from a distance in squad or larger games.

Your website and this collaboration with army painter actually convinced me to buy the entire army painter speed paint set that is out right now. My big fear is losing the reactivation property that has come in so handy for fixing overspill mistakes on a zenithal prime without losing my carefully-defined gradient. I would never be able to use slapchop without it

Glad to see you getting sponsored by Squarepaints :3 I mean... Speedspace, no wait... Spacespeed, Squarespe-kfzk... But in all seriousness this video was pretty inspiring to me. I'm not an especially good model painter, I tend to feel more confident painting unrealistic skin tones of non-human people and monsters. But your technique make me think I could possibly paint some elves or dwarves or what-have-you. Thanks for that Dana! :D *edit:* That Sand Golem as a skin tone is giving me real D&D Hobgoblin, Djinn, Genasi, and even Azer vibes. I'm beginning to think a lot of these skin tones, even when they don't exactly look natural, have a lot of potential in-of-themselves.

If you read this Dana can you please ask Army Painter to release the new skin tones as a separate set and/or to release the new speed paints in separate sets for those of us who already went and bought the Mega Set? These new skin tones look soooooo good.

I haven't tried it, cause I don't dig on green orcs personally. But the statement there is only 1 speed paint with skin in the name in the starter set isn't 100% accurate, as there is a green Orc Skin in there as well.

The Ork Skin speed paint that already exists has a terrible color. I like to make all my orks differentiere shades of green, and the Speed paint is just a dark neon green and looks out of place from every other of the 15 different Greens i am mixing with.
@aartadventure
@aartadventure Год назад
Mix Orc skin and Pale skin and maybe even the Pale Grey colour. I don't personally like bright green Orc skin, I prefer grey-pink with a hint of green.
@elbitxo5945
@elbitxo5945 Год назад
Giving the Orc Skin name to the generic saturated green was a mistake and it's missleading for so many people. 1:1 mix of Orc Skin with Hardened leather looks much better as green skin tone IMO, specially with some highlight and not too dark priming. 1:1 mix with Pallid Bone still has a blueish hue I don't like for skin tone, but it's much better than just Orc Skin. Mixing Orc Skin with Zealot Yellow gives a saturated old-school goblins skin tone I enjoy for older miniatures. All of them might look better with some Purple Alchemy shading on recesses, but it's something I still have to try.

I haven't really seen any good South East Asian/Oriental skin tones. In real life there this covers a huge range over a vast area from Mongolia through Japan and Korea to Burma and Thailand and beyond so covering them all would be difficult but given the popularity of Samurai Games a Japanese tone would be a good start. Cheers and good luck.

I'm not a fan of painting human skin with Contrast or Speedpaints, but this weekend I used that 02:55 suggested pale flesh tone for my Mordheim's Skaven warband, and it works great! Using together Pallid Bone and Purple Alchemy gives the flesh a pale sickening but somewhat warm skin tone, that goes great with the brown and black fur, and gives contrast to the blueish blacks and greys I'm using for the clothes. Just a little bit highlighting and the warband will look great and cohesive. Painting batches with these paints is pure joy.

Suggestion: Start from dark purple or magenta instead of black for the undercoat, with the white as zenithal. Might be even quicker than manually applying the magenta to the recesses, and act globally. Worth a try i'd say.

Sponsored or not, former employee or not, I really appreciate your approach to products, where rather than only complaining about how certain products perform (i.e. reactivation in speedpaints) you instead have learned and show how to use that as a benefit. I hate how it seems like every youtuber does comparisons but forgets to accept that each product behaves differently, because they are different products. And, to me, in order to be a better artist you should always learn to work WITH your materials and not just find the materials that do what you want them to do all the time. Its always been why I enjoy all of your videos.

that dark and medium warm brown are really, really nice. i'm glad that army painter is planning for more varied skin tones and labelling them as such. even setting aside the inclusivity elements that make it nicer to have a broader diversity of skin tones represented in paint names, i've just always wanted quick and easy ways to get that variety in my minis. it's so easy to just make all of my humanoids white, which makes them all very samey. i'm often hesitant to nab a dark brown to use that just because i'm not experienced enough to know how to make a decent dark skin tone. having the one paint solution is going to be great. even with the sand golem I can see it working as a native american or south asian/indian skin tone, but it would be nice to have it named appropriately to help guide the painting process.

I fully agree with your assessments on these, especially the upcoming paints. Having good darker skin tones directly out of a bottle will really help. The magenta in the recesses truck makes it a bit too magenta for my taste, so I wonder if using about 1/5 or 1/4 Crusader with the other mega set colors might give them the kind of warmth that would look good to me. I'll have to do some experimenting too!

I like a whole heap of things in this video. I had a “but wait, what does underpainting/underglazing do??” Thought and then boom there you were showing me. Advanced storytelling skills *chef’s kiss* Also i really appreciated that you suggested the company name more colors with “skin” or “flesh” in the titles. It gets customers minds working towards a wider range of what can be done w the products. Besides being a basic inclusivity fix, that’s just good business.

For the 2 experimental colors that were washed out browns, the second one makes me think of dark elf skin, and I think it's perfect for that. A lot of the creatures we paint have strange skin, and some can be colder. The final color was the same, very good look, although definitely not the sort of skin that you meet in a dark alley, and get to keep all of your blood.
