This is in fact one of the best, if not the best video on RU-vid concerning flesh tones that has ever been shown! If you do portraits, like I do; you have constantly searched for better methods of finding flesh tones! This is byfar one of the best demos on youtube! This is the method that I use and discovered it by trial-and-error just as he has so vividly explained. You can learn to paint simply by asking questions; you must put miles on your brushes! You will become your best teacher!

It's amazing to see how you are to apply paint across the surface to represent the changing colors of the face without blocking it in first or to just slather the paint! There's certainly a lot to consider that go far beyond just what colors to use when you're considering light sources, shapes, skin textures and more when some people just think it's a formula of someone else telling them what basic colors to use. This video gets my nomination for inclusion on the list of All-time Top 10 RU-vid Art Instruction Videos. The idea of working from a Base Color that is average in terms of hue, value, and chroma and using various mixing strategies to modify it based on identification of color variation effects dictated by function, structure, and light conditions would seem to represent an incredibly useful and powerful paradigm for color management in portrait painting work. I am colorblind, and I see how this will help me stop struggling so mightily with color. Wow! ... I really want to run to the easel and paint right now! But I think I am going to watch this several more times first.

This was very informative. I go back and rewatch and rewatch. Learning about light and how it effects what you are painting is so essential for me. I didn't quite understand why there was so much more chroma under the chin, and you explained it to me. Now I know why certain colors are used for that area. Thank you!!!

Man you use a lot of orange! Great videos though - very helpful. They don't help me as much when I'm stuck trying to paint traditional Irish skin without orange umpalumpa makeup on it or 'false tan' as we call it, or if we are not severely sunburned. Irish skin is a lovely shade of light pink, purply, greenish grey - I think - try imagining that!
