Might be interesting to poll the other curators of the Iowas to see if they also show evidence of the bow number being displaced upwards a bit. Being that only New Jersey was reactivated for Viet Nam service it may provide evidence that moving the hull number was a Viet Nam thing.

Early 1960's, Soviet "trawler" off our home port to watch coming & going. Some submarines had different numbers on each side to boggle the Soviets. Also some boats went to sea with name & number painted out to do sneaky submarine stuff.

1775, November 10th… we were born in a tavern. Tun Tavern was a tavern and brewery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A fitting place for the birth of my Corps. Every living Marine knows two birthdates. His own… and the Corps. The ceremony and birthday celebration for Marines is the most important holiday of the year. We often celebrated in Las Vegas by renting out one of the massive dining halls. The oldest and youngest Marines present cut the cake. The current Commandant of the Marine Corps sends out his “birthday message” which is read by all Marines. I also observed this tradition and celebration in combat in Iraq with an MRE pound cake. If you know a Marine… send him a “happy birthday” on November 10th this year. Semper Fi

I was in the Navy 25yrs and it is way easier to remember the Marines B-day, day before Veterans Day. Out of 1000's of Marine memories #1 was a Master Sgt chewing the ass of a young airman and promising eternal damnation if I didn't quit partying away my $200 check and do my homework (barrackswork). He fixed me.

They did a good job on the numbers, 1st pic looked 3d. I was in bootcamp for the Navy's 200th, and I made my 1st cruise on a 62 that knew where the 'hull' numbers where supposed to be, on the island. It was nasty compared to a nuke but we went places and I didn't know any better. I miss her.
@CaptainBlueTech
@CaptainBlueTech 7 дней назад
I would imagine that the numbers have some sort of simple answer, like something was causing a a bit of premature ware on the bottom or that moving them up just a bit made them easier to paint and maintain and someone just made the decision to make things easier for painting and maintenance.

For as handsome and sharp the numbering looks from a distance, it's remarkable the primitive way it's constructed up close.

New Jersey's looking pretty great, Ryan. I recently visited USS Massachusetts. And I got to tell you, for a battleship basically untouched since after WW2, the hull and the interior is immaculate. However, I wish I could say the same thing about the superstructure. She's very rough up there. Hell, there are a couple of rust holes protruding in the enclosed bridge right in front of the conning tower. And in that same area (just on the underside) one of her power cables broke off a coupling and is now dangling. The paints flaking and chipping all over the superstructure. If anything, I'd say she should be the next battleship to get some work done.

It does seem the numbers are painted where there is going to be a fair bit of wear with water breaking over the bow when underway in heavy weather or raising lowering anchor , neither of which is going to affect the ship now . New Jersey is certainly looking great now all the work is coming to an end .

I assumed that the hull numbers would have been specified by the Naval Architects/Naval Engineers/ or designers in the yard before construction phase in consultation with the owners (USN). The dimensions of which and the placement geometries would have been found in the blueprint/Spec Packages. Possibly as a note and in the sections for “coatings”. But this seems not to be the case and wasn’t “standardized” or specified. It’s interesting. I wonder if there were any NavyAdmin type “memo’s” that were ever sent out as direction from HQ as to the Navy’s official “policy” or if it was up to the individual commands of the ships to determine size, location, etc. based on their needs to identify each other from afar by visual means.

Fantastic efforts! thank you so much! Next project could be... why not reactivate some of her systems such as the training motors for her turrets? Or the anchors windlass? Surely, it's easier to write it than doing it... but BB61 did it! And that, would be an hell of a show (and loads of paying customers).

You've done videos on the Safest places to be and he most dangerous places to be. My question is, Where would you say is the worst place the ship could be penetrated. If NJ was Duking it out with another battleship, What's the worst possible place for the NJ to be hit, eg "a penetrating hit right at this bulkhead would allow uncontrolled flooding between these two important compartments" You could use it to discuss being hit in other vital areas and how that problem would be resolved. Thanks!

I’ve alawaya believed the ship should be presented in their final configurations before they retired, such that New Jersey does. Hence, I’m a fan of the white large shaded numbers. That’s one thing that I with USS Kidd would do, place the white shaded “661” that she had when she retired….interpret her in her mid-1960s retirement era; but they chose to interpret her in her WWII era with the small hull number. They’ve done good work with it there.
@sirboomsalot4902
@sirboomsalot4902 6 дней назад
I’m generally in favor of that as well, but that being said Kidd needed such (comparatively) little modification to be put back into her WW2 configuration that I think it was worth it, as no other DDs are in that configuration. Some times it doesn’t work as well though; for example, I personally wish Olympia had been preserved in her final configuration despite how cool and unique the twin 8-inch gun turrets are (even though the ones on her now are just sheet metal replicas)

Did New Jersey ever earn the Golden Anchor? It's a retention reward given to ships with good moral and reenlistments. If she did receive it, would that make you consider painting the anchors gold?

@rogerbarnes9904
@rogerbarnes9904 7 дней назад
As far as welding the numbers would it not make sense for this to be done just before the ship was repainted? If you put the weld marks on a newly painted surface you destroy the coating so why would you? If you do it just before you take the coating off then it's not a problem as it will be going back to metal anyway. May explain why there's no smaller hull number markings. As the ww2 paint schemes were so close together they probably just painted around the original digits
