Painting Water Shouldn't be Hard, Try It This Way

I used to dread painting the water in my work as it often overwhelmed me. I learned to take a different approach over the years and so here's my method.
In this video I show you how I paint the reflections in the river below the banks. I show you how I lay out the dark colors first and then fill in the highlights after to simply the process for me.

That last bit of white you added to the water right before you went to your oils was a brilliant finale' to the acrylics. Beautiful!

It's a good thing you've discovered, imho, and I've been painting for many, many decades, well into the old fart decades! haha I realized a while back that areas that look weird, might be the new, creative territory my artistic self was moving into. Unfamiliar and weird perhaps, but not something I should paint over. So it takes careful observation and some contemplation sometimes (or a lotta times!) I suspect I just might have erased some good painting from time to time through the years :( Oh well, I don't beat myself up... I will keep going! I want to see what's around the next corner :)
@drd1924
@drd1924 3 года назад
@@robertterrell3065 Very Good point you made here.... In doing a painting currently parts of it looked weird to me up close... Out of proportion in a way. (the muscles on the back of a mtn Lion as he is haunched down to be specific. In my opinion animal proportions must be correct so the animal does not look deformed or cartoonlike.) but when I stepped back and looked at it from a few feet away you didn't notice it at all. I realized I was being too critical of myself and anyone else would never notice what I was critical of and wanting to correct. (or Paint over) So I left it. And yes as to your point--- I do believe it was me stepping out into unfamiliar creative territory but loving it at the same time. There is a balance of wanting to be too perfect or realistic in what we want to represent....While a realistic painting must not look cartoonish in areas when the rest looks lifelike. At the same time I do realize now it's good to stop for a moment and step back a few feet to re-evaluate the picture as a whole taking it in from what would be a new viewers perspective. Would anyone ever notice I did a whisker wrong? Would anybody ever care when the rest is just right? Is it worth screwing up 2 inches of canvas space trying to correct a few millimeters? Likely not haha. Being a machinist and working in the 1/10,000th range and measuring things with an Optical Comparator causes me to be a little critical of my work. And in that sense it is a competition against other Companies. But when we paint we should enjoy it as opposed to it becoming work, Right? Although with our own artwork, who are we really competing with except ourselves within the last piece of artwork on to the next one.

Chuck, I sure appreciate and thank you for the detailed instruction in this video! Just yesterday I was discussing a mountain and water scene I am going to paint for someone using one of their photos from their trip out west as a reference. Even though you made this video a while back, I could not have come upon it at a more perfect time because the wheels in my head were turning as to the best way to go about the water. I was amazed by how much that last minute addition of light highlights added to the central interest of the painting. As always, thank you for sharing your experience with us and for being humble enough to admit you're always learning and that you, too, have failures along the way. That absolutely inspires novices like me to keep working at it and improving. It's easy to give up when you feel overwhelmed by a particular painting but you are like the calm in the storm saying, it's okay.

This is much better than what I do lol...I just blend colours till I like it, then add either pure white or muted white lines for rippling water...people say it looks realistic, but this brings out so much more. Great video and I like how you follow the reference but also add in your own creativity. :)

Chuck, It's a great painting lesson. One hour to learn how to paint a river is wonderfull. I already paint rivers, but not with the same level of details as you. I learned two big things: How to mix colours gradually on the palette, and how to create shadows and lights on the canvas step by step. Great lesson, Chuck. Thank you !
