Did you know you can use watercolour on canvas and you don't need to just paint watercolours on paper? Perhaps you did know and wondered what the point was - why bother? If paper has been good enough for hundreds of years, why would you want to paint watercolour on canvas? I share a few of the advantages, the main one being how incredibly easy it is to fix mistakes.
Watercolour can be very unforgiving. You can correct some mistakes, but because it is transparent, anything you do wrong will shine through the subsequent layers. On canvas the paint lifts very easily and I will show you how. I'll also mention a few of the other advantages as we go along.
Every like and comment tells RU-vid to show this to more people, so please jump in. If you really, really like this content and want to support me you can donate at Kofi. I have just set it up at: ko-fi.com/lizc...
If you want more top tips for working in watercolour on canvas please check out these films:

If you want a lot more information, please check out my book: Painting Watercolours on Canvas ISBN: 9781785005893. There's a flip through here: • Book flip - Painting w... and you can get it from any book seller worldwide, or Amazon.
I also have an in depth online course www.lizchadert.... This takes you through everything from why bother, to preparing your own canvas, to getting started and finishing...
And there's a Watercolour on Canvas group on Facebook. As it stands there are 7000 members from 18 or so countries, so if you want to join us, please do: / 463275440905151
You've got the questions and hopefully, I have a few answers. With the new watercolour grounds available from QoR, Daniel Smith and Schmincke, you can turn any canvas into a watercolour canvas. Or you can buy ready prepared ones like Yes!, Fredrix and Frisk.
See this video for how to prepare a canvas for watercolour: • How to make a watercol... or this one for how to make your own watercolour ground at home: • How to make your own D...

that’s interesting - I sometimes do put music. Do you find it off putting? I kind of feel I need to fill the silence.
@pennyvae

Actually I really enjoy listening to the pencil, or brush on paper without the music. I know everyone is different but I think it's part of why I love art (drawing, painting) it's the tactile nature of the instrument in your hand making marks and mixing the paints. ASMR, I guess. However, you do it however you like, Liz, I love watching and learning from you anyway you do it :)@@LizChadertonArt

Hi Liz, the toucans are fabulous! Thanks for this video. I just got a pack of small canvas boards that said they were 100% cotton, pre-primed, and acid free. I've only tried one simple landscape so far but I can see that there is definitely a learning curve to them because they don't really act like painting on paper. The paint doesn't merge with the other colors much, so it was hard to get those soft transitions. But one thing that was good so far is that it seemed like I could work on it forever without it drying out. The colors didn't seem as vibrant either, but that might just be me. Anyway, it was fun to watch you paint, and you gave a lot of good info, so if I hadn't already gotten these, I'd be running to Amazon to get some. 😃

@@LizChadertonArt I'm going to have to get it next month! I LOVE the cow on the cover, and all of the paintings shown in the sample! I'm wondering if I'm having trouble because the little canvases that I got (with backing attached) aren't the best? More experimenting to be done. 😄

@@rubyfisch5077 are they primed for watercolour or for acrylic?
@rubyfisch5077
@rubyfisch5077 19 дней назад
@@LizChadertonArt It said it could be used for watercolor, acrylics, markers, etc., and that it was primed. I did try putting a couple of coats of gesso, but that didn't seem to do much good. I've given up on them for the time being and sticking with paper. It likes me better. lol

Thanks Liz. Question. You always mix puddles of paint in wells. Do you squeeze out fresh paint for this? Is there a reason for this?
@LizChadertonArt
@LizChadertonArt 8 месяцев назад
I do. I like fresh paint as it is juicy and mixes to Rich washes. I like planning and limiting my palette to keep everything coherent. The problem is if you have 24 or 48 colours in your palette you end up using too many and it doesn’t make for a good painting

Hi Liz Was that on your own home made watercolour ground or a commercial ground ? And do you find any difference in erasing between the two kinds of ground ? (I've got your book but haven't used your recipe yet.) I like the toucans. Thank you for the video.
