UPDATE 9/2/2021
1. I don't recommend sanding dry bisqueware. I am an advocate for safety when it comes to making pottery. Because I was making a video, I forgot that I usually wet the sandpaper or dampen the bisqueware before sanding. Sorry for any confusing. I will make a point of explaining that better in future videos.
2. After making this video, I found a plastic bead container with similar compartments that are already sealed at the bottom, at Hobby Lobby. Another person noted in the comments that they found one at Walmart.
SIDE NOTE.... :-) I paint on bisqueware with mostly Amaco Velvet Underglazes. I immediately apply a clear zinc-free glaze to the raw underglaze with a Mayco #8 Fan Brush. This thick brush allows me to apply a generous coat of clear glaze without smearing the underglazes whatsoever. Thanks for watching!!! :-)

Lisa…you will get plenty more subscribers because you are lovely to listen to and your work is thoughtful and instructions are clear! I enjoyed this and I like your work. I too collect random images of patterns and shapes which I record on my phone. I still have an old colour printer and I print them out and paste them into an ‘inspirations book’ so they are all gathered together. 🙂

Glad you like it! It's working out pretty well! :-) I do lay a sheet of saran wrap over the underglazes before I close th3 lid. That keeps them moist enough not to harden. I'm also wondering if silicone would have worked better. Time will tell! :-)

Yes, the selling is a pain! 😀 The pieces always seem imperfect in some way, and art fairs are time consuming and more work than what buyers think. Etsy is nice, but then listing the items and packing and shipping take a lot of time. Some of these production potters bring in help. That would be nice. 😀 😃 🙂 🙃

Oh okay. Then most likely, the layer of pigment you applied the next color to, was too dry. It's best to work on leather hard clay for that process, I believe. I've had that happen when using pigments.

Beautiful work and enjoyable easy to understand demo. Thanks so much for sharing! I just wanted to mention though, please either wet-dry sand paper under running water or wear a respirator. That dust can really make you sick and permanently damage lungs if you breathe it in. I know that a respirator isn’t very video friendly, but it’s definitely worth it to protect yourself when sanding bisque or greenware.
@WildAcornsArtStudio

Hello 👋 Welcome to the channel! The brushes Inpaint with are just cheap brushes from Hobby Lobby. They're considered 'acrylic paint' brushes. My favorite brush, though, which I'm very picky about... 😀 is the brush that I apply clear glaze with, and that's the Mayco #8 Fluffy Fan Brush. Not the skimpy one! 😉 It's a wonderful brush.

I use whatever acrylic paint brushes that I find on sale at Hobby Lobby. I don't remember what brand, they're so old the name has worn off. :-) I don't like the horse hair ones, though, because the hair falls out, and they're not quite stiff enough to apply the paint how I like it. Mine are all black or white bristle.

You can mix the Amaco underglazes together:-) So if you buy black, white, yellow, red and blue you can mix every color you want.

Oh yes, I mix all mine together! None of them are the standard colors. 😀 Where I teach, I only buy the students the primary colors and make them mix them their own. 😀 Some colors are hard to achieve, so I would rather buy those colors. Thanks for watching! 😀😃🙂🙃

Thanks! ❤️ I make a few of my own glazes, and I have mixed up some colored slip with Mason stains, but I've never made my own underglazes. I've heard different artists say that it's really not worth it. But mixing your own colored slip is really easy. My issue with that is, I didn't get the colors I wanted. Mason stains are expensive, and you need a lot to make a good concentrated slip color. I will do a demonstration when. I use up the ones I made. Who knows...Mayne I'll fall back in love with them!! 😀😃🙂🙃

Thanks for subscribing!!! Yes, I like when pieces are a little thicker. I'm clumsy. I always see other potters make these really thin bowls, and I always think to myself, "I'd break that in a day." 😀 I think a needle might take too much glaze off, but yeah, maybe an exact knife could just razor it off. I hardly ever use it. Thanks for watching!!

I just LOOOOVE YOUR WORK SOOO MUCH!! I must say though that you can not be sanding your pieces like that without wearing a mask!! I know it sounds ridiculous but the diseases you can get from the silica in your lungs is absolutely horrible. Also you are getting the dust in your glazes and on your other pieces which can cause the glaze to not adhere and it will crawl badly. PLEASE please sand outside or at least not anywhere where you are breathing it in and not close to your work.
@WildAcornsArtStudio
@WildAcornsArtStudio 2 года назад
Yes, thank you! That is what I teach my students. I usually dip the sanding disk in water, which is hard to see on the video. I'll have to remember to be more careful in future videos. Thanks for bringing that to my attention!

Your work is amazing. I am a beginner and I was wondering what paint brushes you use and where can I purchase them?
@WildAcornsArtStudio
@WildAcornsArtStudio Год назад
Hello and thank you! 😊 Most of my paint brushes are from Hobby Lobby or Michael's, except for the Mayco Fluffy Fan Brush #8. I buy mine from my local clay supplier. But most clay suppliers carry them. It is the best for applying clear glaze or any brushing glaze to a bisqued surface. (Make sure to get the fluffy one.) It holds a lot of glaze, which makes it easier to get an even coat.

Hi. Make sure you're not watering down the underglazes too much, because they tend to burn out at higher temperatures in the kiln. I think that's what happened with the red underglaze I painted on the flower mugs. Underglazes are meant for low fire, but can be used at all temps, but they do tend to change colors if they're not thick enough. I try not to water them down as much. Greens tens burn brown, and so do reds. It's all about testing, and trial and error. Also, make sure not to use a clear glaze that has zinc in it. Zinc can also alter the underglaze colors. I fire to cone 5, and that seems to work fairly well.

Love the video! Can you do this on leather hard clay? How high do you fire them before and after? I guess the clear glaze isn't used all over to avoid sticking to the plate once in the kiln? Love you loads, so sorry about all these questions ❤️
@WildAcornsArtStudio
@WildAcornsArtStudio Год назад
Hello! No worries, I don't mind answering questions! 😀 Yes, you can definitely apply the underglaze to greenware, whether it's dry or leather hard. After the bisque fire, then you can apply a zinc-free clear glaze. Underglaze can be applied to the bottom surface, but regular glaze cannot, unless you plan on stilting the piece. I bisque fire to cone 04 and glaze fire to cone 5. Good luck! 😀

@@WildAcornsArtStudio Sorry, just checked the transparant glaze I have. Can I fire the clear glaze higher, when using underglazes? Cause my clear glaze says cone 08
@WildAcornsArtStudio
@WildAcornsArtStudio Год назад
@@tinepeeters1854 So it sounds like you are using low-fire clay? (Cone 08 is fired much lower than cone 5.) Just make sure that the clear glaze is designed to fire at the same temperature as the clay you're using. Underglazes have a wide range of firing temps, so they'll be fine. Google "Ceramic Cone Firing Chart." It will help you understand the range and temperatures of the cones you're firing to. It's easier to look at a chart than have me explain it. 😀 It's kind of weird how the numbers relate to temperatures. 😀

I have a question, after putting underglaze do you fire it then you put clear glaze and fire again?
@WildAcornsArtStudio
@WildAcornsArtStudio 2 года назад
Hello. After the underglaze dries completely, I gently apply a generous coat of zinc-free clear with a soft thick fan brush. Mayco #8. After the first coat dries, I apply one more, and then I glaze fire. I don't fire the piece again before adding the clear.

Hi Marcela. Yes, you can paint the bottoms of your pieces if you're using underglazes. It's not the clay that causes the glazes to stick to the kiln shelf, it's the flux that's in the glazes. Amaco Velvet Underglazes do not have flux, from my experience. I have not had any of them stick.
