Painting with acrylic inks and watercolours and my artist process. In this video, I revisit some works in progress, and show a little about how I "finish" some paintings. I teach part of one of my favourite techniques with acrylic inks in a reductionistic method of sorts. I use both watercolour and bristol (for acrylics) 140 lb paper, and also talk about my love of "toned" papers by Strathmore.
I use several different brands of watercolour/mixed media paper - Artist Loft(Michael's in house brand) 140 lb watercolour paper, Strathmore and Canson XL 140 lb paper, and Arches Cold Press paper on a block (12 x16”).
Bristol paper by Strathmore is great for acrylic paints.
I love Neo colour Caran D’ache wax (1’s) and water-soluble (ii’s ) crayons
Paint pens I use:
Posca
Sharpie water-based medium paint pen
Metallic ballpoint pens:
Uniball-signo pens
Watercolours I love:
theoceanpaper....
stonegroundpai...
www.amazon.ca/...
danielsmith.com/
Acrylic inks I have used:
Liquetex acrylic ink
Dr. Ph Martin India inks
Golden high flow fluid acrylics
Acrylic Paints
Tri Art Liquid paint (Canadian company)
Gouache
Holbein “pale mint” Acryla
I use a round watercolour brush - both size 10 and 12 (quite large).
I use Faber Castell Gelatos or Artist Loft (Michaels) water-soluble crayons.
Course reference: Flora Bowley and Lynzee Lynx ("Fresh Paint")
I like Master's brush cleaner for more soiled brushes.

Do you have any hints for being comfortable using my own handwriting on a painting? A video about that?
@allisondawrant
@allisondawrant 6 месяцев назад
I can touch on this in my upcoming videos but it's all about practice... just like exploring different marks in art, maybe carve out some time to play with different types of printing /writing - Choose a word and try writing it upper and lower case and different styles... You can fall in love with your own handwriting which will be authentic to you and your work.

I had started to watch this video before, but hadn’/t seen what you wrote on your work. I then started to watch it , on a new day, and saw what you wrote. Today is my mother’s birthday. She passed a few years ago, and I miss her terribly everyday. ‘The new day’, which is today, June 26th, that I began to watch the video again, is my mom’s birthday and the saying that you have written “this too shall pass” was a favourite saying of hers. Thank you for bringing my mom’s gentle memory to me, on her special day. You made my day.

Just came upon your videos and find them very helpful. I also agree to your philosophy of using good products. When I was young i babysat a neighbor who was an Artist and on my 16th birthday she gave me 2 canvases and 2 good oil paint brushes. Now at 89 I'm still using good products, but not oil anymore. I pray you are not near the fires. Take care. Thank you for sharing your talent.

Hi Allison, thankyou once again for sharing your creativity, you're such a prolific artist, that in itself is inspiring. I previously mentioned that since watching your videos I have been inspired to create an Oracle deck. You said to reach out, but I can't help feeling guilty as you are clearly a very busy person, but I wondered if you could provide a little bit more information on the process involved from artwork to print. Does it matter what size art the photography comes from, did you send your own photographs to a printer and do the words have to be in a print type face or would it work for them to be hand written? If it's easier maybe you can add a little segment on the end of one of your videos rather than waste your time typing to me, and let us all know how your Oracle deck is coming along. Thank you

i use my iphone and do all of my own photography. i use a colour card and put it in the photos so my printer can match the colours better if he doesn’t see the original. i don’t use a scanner as he does that for me and corrects the background to be white in photo shop (or whatever program he may use). you can also do that in canva now. if you have good photos it shouldn’t matter the size of the original. take photos on an easel with overcast day(lighting). keep the work flat to the camera lens. you can add writing after in canva or a photo editing site:)

I love the pink, gold and teal piece. So beautiful. What fixative do you use for Caran d'ache crayons? I'm afraid of doing a piece with them and then spraying them with a fixative and ruining them. Your work is so pretty. You seem to strike the perfect balance in the picture.😊
@allisondawrant
@allisondawrant Год назад
thanks! As far as a fixative for the Caran d'ache crayons. there are 2 diff types: Neo Colour 1s , which are wax, non water soluble crayons, and Neo Colour 2s, which are water-soluble. It also depends how the artist uses them in their mixed media work... When I use a fixative over the crayons, it's when I use the wax (neo 1's), and it helps prevent them from smudging flecks of crayon on the work. I use that before using a varnish on canvas work. Most of my work on paper gets framed, so it's less of a risk. I love Spectrafix as it is non toxic, low odor, and it works well to "fix " the crayon in place... I know artists that use Krylon sprays -or pastel fixatives, but they tend to be more toxic and you need a good ventilated space ect... (I don't like aerosols personally). that's just me tho- it's all about experimentation!:)
