University introduced the original 315 sometime late in 1955, right on the coattails of the G610 -- it was already a very well vetted. Utilizing the phenomenal heavy cast C15W type woofer, and one of University’s potent, and reliable compression tweeters -- and the midrange radiator ….
By late 1958, these University 315-C was introduced -- an update with slightly lower cone resonance, more excursion and a stiffer, wider cambric accordion edge.
Like the G610 -- these 315’s were super costly -- purchased by only a few wealthy HiFi buyers of the 1950s and 1960s. When introduced in 1955 -- the 315 cost was around $2000/each (inflation adjusted $220 in 1955 ...as was the Jensen G610 which was a even pricer $247). Unlike the Jensen G610, and 604 the University 315 had a brief production life, only into the mid 1960s -- and few were sold -- making them both a rare find -- and a sleeping bargain -- not common in the world of classic HiFi.
Buyers dreaming and saving up to buy the wonderful Jensen G610; should consider the 315 as a tempting, beguiling waystation on the motorway to the rarified land of much more expensive 1950s American built super speakers. Collectors who already own 604’s or G610’s will find the 315c a very capable alternative presenter of all your favorite passages…. Every interested audio buyer will find these to be bargain priced investments likely to rise alongside it’s very loftily appraised competition.

I had four of these fantastic speakers from 1965 until today. Each pair mounted in a large cabinet, two cabinets yielded the most amazing stereo I have ever heard! I love these speakers and will never give them up!

Hi Bob... Yeah -- They really are not bad at all - - definitely getting some respect these days... If this is Bob of PL .. If so wanted to give you a big hello - - my father Walt may have talked to you back in the AudioMart ....days I think maybe once or twice. And I wanted to say, after 4 decades ++ sometimes I part-out Phase Linear items for spares... Just wanted to send Kudos on the quality you guys were able to achieve back then with I know, a limited budget.

@@Bobsunfire Hang onto them a while longer, they will appreciate some more I imagine.... If you can get a hold of Jensen's real 3 way version, same period and before -- they are better, perhaps by a magnitude The midrange of the G610 is a powerful phenolic driver -- much smoother as well. With your years of experience, I bet you could do some improvements on these conventional du-axial (whizzer enhanced) and tri-axial concepts. All paper with rare earth magnets...they would be very efficient! All of these speakers could be improved up and simplified with a better and simpler crossover -- perhaps going to 6db or maybe even filter caps only. I enjoyed your classic Seminar, I remember those days --- hope you have more classic footage to post! Take care Bob.

The two University 315-C three way speakers you are showing were late 1960's /early 1970 models that were black/silver paint and utilized a radial metal horn with a middle defuse bullet for better HF dispersion. On the horn was a T-50 powerful HF driver. The older 315-C models further back in the early 50's and 60's were green/gold paint with a metal mesh covering the larger horn mouth. The models you are showing were manufactured in white Plains NY and also in Oklahoma City until the University plant turned into Altec Lansing and later Electro-Voice in the 1970's. The 315-C later models I owned were in 15 inch Karlson cabinets...tight fit but fantastic sound and I actually used a pair in many sound applications indoors and out. They were University's competition with Altec Lansings 604 models. The later University 315-C speakers had super clear efficient sound and never got the famous recognition as the 604's. By the way these 315-C's do not need a big power amp due to the efficiency they have. Electro -Voice made the 3-way 15TRX and 15TRXB in 50's, 60's, 70's which used a mechanical whizzer cone for the mids as the University 315-C does calling it a "diffusicone" mid range. I was able to tour the Oklahoma City University plant in 1971 actually seeing the 315' being tested and boxed ready to sell tHi Fi dealers that carried Universiy speakers. Al Stemen OKC

Great comment and history, thanks! You are certainly correct about the era / date of production for the silver and black models. disregard my date posted in the title, I think I fixed that when these were sold off a couple of years ago. 1958 would have definitely place them in the gold and green era...

Speaker drivers like this are what make me love hifi ❤ I love whizzer cone drivers more I use some Phillips From the 60s as I love jazz and that just does it for me ❣️ just need to build a nice tube amplifier for them as I want something similar to the time but love the video 😁👍

We are huge fans of the 1950s/60s Phillips AD series drivers. The 8" are great and the rare 12 & 15" even more so.

@@HiFiTown yes I would of loved a 12 or 15 but for my need's the 9710M/01 was the best I could afford not seen a lot of them in the UK and I love the look of them seen on RU-vid that Phillips is still making some 8inch full range driver's which I think is great as you don't see many low cost full range driver's from other manufacturers that look just like the older ones but with the Phillips logo printed on the dust cap even has the hexagon shaped basket which was nice to see can't wait to see what you show next thanks for replying to me 😉

Hey great video on these amazing speakers. I'm looking for another model 6303 which is impossible to find here in europe . I have a single one in perfect condition but it only got here because it was imported in the early 60s. There is something amazing about how well they sound and are constructed.
@HiFiTown
@HiFiTown Год назад
University speakers have very strong midrange (at the expense of smoothness , in many cases). Keep looking, my advice. 6303 is not totally uncommon over in USA. Make sure it's got the original cone and is the same color / finish / scheme, so it matches roughly your unit.You can get it at low cost in USA, and have it shipped. Big problem is the poor packing procedures most sellers practice. It's a shame. If you can't get one, enjoy it as a mono. HiFi was was exclusively "wide range" and monophonic, well into the early-mid 1950s... the golden era of all HiFi when some many good amps and loudspeakers were made :)

I have a pair of these and thinking of an open baffle design. Now that my wife loves the sound of vinyl, maybe she'll let me buy a nice valve amplifier to drive them.

I have the Pioneer PAT-30x (12" version) but there is also a 15" version made in 1959 very rare,so rare,very difficult to find information,I want to rebuild the crossovers
@HiFiTown
@HiFiTown 4 года назад
I do my own stunts Excellent comment! Some of the very early Pioneer/national are quite good! Especially the biflex cones. If you decide your capacitor needs replacement, I recommend going with a vintage type, In good working order....try to use the same type and value (it doesn't have to be exact, but close is good check it with a meter first.) that was in there, most likely a paper wax or electrolytic. If you want to experiment sure you can use a poly propylene but it will sound different.

@@HiFiTown Thanks for your reply,it was nice to hear from you, my hobby is in DIY Audio have built three different tube amplifiers and am building a tube preamplifier at the moment,I have built new cabinets for my Altec 604-8g's as have a cabinet making back ground,they sound fantastic,I came across my Pioneer PAT-30x by accident believe it or not I paid $50 Australian dollars for them,in Gumtree similar to your Craigs List,as I knew a little about the Jensens,I was shocked When I saw the photos in the add,as they looked quite similar to the Jensens they are in excellent condition and played very well,but noticed the one capacitor (electrolytic) had a leak,I have tried to look up the values,but proving difficult,I cannot find the schematic for the crossovers anywhere.Apollogies for this long reply. In practice, you could use a variety of cabinets - - different sizes, and various port designs. Originally these were preferred to be used in a large modified base scoop with reflex (The university classic) They also were he frequently used with the unusual Karlson tuned / reflex port design -- which is actually a fairly small cabinet. as with most classic hi-fi - - the bigger the better, I would not recommend a sealed box though it could be done with these.

Hello Gabriel, good question. The 315, along with most other premium products of the 1950s and 60s or more or less capable of response to the full hi-fi standard. That would be about 60 ( 20 with hopes and prayers) to 20 K depending on the enclosure they are housed in. Realistically, of course while they are very capable to thenouter reaches in HF, while getting ridiculous low frequencies out of them would be far more difficult. Most of us in hi-fi know that it is better not to try for unrealistically low frequencies as it muddies up the system - - if you need true low frequencies better off using a separate cabinet. Where it counts in the detailed mid range voicing and upper end - - these speakers are quite nice. II wanted to make this video -- because the scenario is quite unusual in audio land -- the sum of the setup comes nicer in practice than the individual university components.

@bobcarver1455
@bobcarver1455 3 года назад
They may seem stiff but they are not. The air stiffness in the cabinet is far greater than the mechanical surround stiffness. Not to worry - all is well.

Yes, you would be safe to buy that even if only one speaker was good. However, make sure that they are the correct 315 model. There is a cheaper stamped frame speaker that carries a similar model number. It's made out of plain sheet metal - - instead of a cast frame. Maybe that is a decent model - - but it wouldn't be worth nearly the same. Good luck!

Hello -- good question! Depends on condition mostly. It's a very broad range. 200-700/each is the current market value. Entirely dependent on supply, demand, original vs C version, and lots of other factors. If you are serious about buying a nice pair like this, expect to pay on the high side to get a nice, matched , tested pair ..and from somebody who can properly pack and ship them. Best Regards, Early

i might be buying one pair but the tweeter on one driver doesnt work. is this speaker worth it? can i find replacement tweeter?
@HiFiTown
@HiFiTown 7 лет назад
mike kibo A failed HF driver in these is very rare. It may have been abused. More likely just a dirty or failed potentiometer or LPAD (very common). The HF setup they used may have been OEM special specd for use in this 3 way config. I would not advise buying a blown or bad one for that reason.
@kibovolks
@kibovolks 7 лет назад
Im probably going to take the risk. I hope its just a dirty pot or crossover parts. I see a T50 tweeter on ebay now though. Inwill pick up tomorrow. You think its not easy to burn the tweeter right? Unless cranked up to distortion.
