I added a Giant Beat 20" to my set up of 2002 and 3000 rides and crashes because it is exactly how you describe. The Gold standard. And I use it mostly for ride. It has such a great sound and is extremely playable. Music to a drummer's ears.
I've finally transitioned over to Paiste after wanting to for years. The consistency of their cymbals from the top to the bottom is second to none and its an unmistakable sound. I've been using a mixed set of thin and regular weight PST7s as my gigging cymbals and I've had a few people mistake them for 2002s. As usual, excellent video all around. You guys are awesome.
Yes, that's what I thought when I heard the demos of the PST7 set... they sounded to me like a professional set of cymbals! I personally have just a 2002 ride, 22"... amazing.
yep i plan to buy a full set of pst7 series and get multiple weights and then get a full 2002 set so i can run a solid mixture of the best of the bunch and have slight variances for recording multiple tracks also a k custom dark set would be cool but Paiste is number one by far to me
@Rex R they are amazing kits live and in the studio snatch them up if you can find it for less than 700 bucks even for a four-piece a three-piece for under $400 is a hell of a deal, what sizes?
@Rex R snatch that kit quickly. And if there's more than one I would absolutely like to purchase one of those if you could let me know where you saw it if it's on reverb or wherever. But like I said if you can get your hands on it for that price get it 🤙
@ Ross gillis, ...you say it, my friend! Thay are realy beatyfull!!! You wride the point!!! Thats why i love thay, good as crash and ride, quick go up and superp systain!!! I play only thin and big cymbuls and so you get thet sound!!! The 2002 if thay thin and big (meen realy thin, vintage thin not modern there is a big different) thay sound similar to the giant beat, but not the same, for me also the giant beat have the tone i love, and the deep pitch with there glasy tone make thay special and can also used in jazz!!! Btw have a 1967 24" giant beat! ...superp! And the stambul and stambul 65 60s (pre serial nr.) b8 cymbuls and all sound beatyfull big and thin! The smalest are 20" and heaviesd are 1900g by 20" 😎 ...thay sound superp and are can be good mixed with the 3 itself (60s giant beat, stambul (b8) and stambul 65 (b8) )!!! ...but must say love also my 50s avedis and my old k's from 50s and 60s (but sadly thay are expensive, but not so rare as so many say!, but realy expensive) ...i get also one of my Favorit set from 60s ufip thin cymbuls 16" hat and 2x 20" crashride and 1x 18" crashride + a 60s avedis 20" crashride and a 70s 18" all "new old stock", never played and never sold 😍
I personally love the sounds I'm hearing from the Big Beats. To my ear they sound like a Paiste Red label 2002 mixed with a Zildjian K - almost. The brightness is there but they are more complex and dark than the regular 2002s. I would think in a studio mix the Black Label Big Beats would leave a nice mid range area for bass and distorted guitars to occupy.
2002's have always impressed me how they can cut yet remain very musical. Watching led's Madison square garden dvd growing up I was always impressed how well they could go from keeping up with jimmy's marshall's full tilt to sounding so smooth and bluesy.
This is the video i've been waiting for! Thanks for doing this head to head comparison. Makes it so much easier to hear the subtleties, which is nice when you're getting ready to shell out some big bucks..so having played them all what was your opinion listening back to the mix?
I absolutely love paiste 2002 sound edge hats. They just do it all for me.They have such a clear definition. Paired up with my 18 and 20 thin 602 crashes and a very special 20K custom medium ride.I am really happy. Now if I could get the paiste 22" inch masters swish ,my dream cymbal,oh buddy.!!! Maybe someday.
Never owned Paiste Cymbals but I had an opportunity to play the Signature line when first introduced and I loved them, especially the ride cymbal. Tough call on the three lines in this video but if I had to pick one it would be the 2002's.
Paiste 2002 are one of the best cymbal series ever produced. Such an incredible allround sound! Never heard a 2002 cymbal that sounded bad. If I had to choose, My next complete Cymbal Setup would be the 2002 or the Paiste Signature(more expensive)! Alternative is Meinl Byzance - incredible allround Sound as well! By the way: That would be an awesome Video!!! Comparison between the 16" oder 18" crashes of those series. Meinl Byzance vs. Paiste 2002 vs. Paiste Signature vs Zildjian K

I’ve been using Zildjian since 90’s, but this cymbals are freaking awesome!
I could have used this video a couple of years ago when I was trying to decide between a set of Giant Beats or Big Beats. I ultimately went with the Giant Beats but it was a tough call. When crashed they have a great dark wash with a glassy top end sustain that is just lovely. Think of the big crashes on Your Time Is Gonna Come. The 24 GB washes out pretty easily with moderate ride sticking. Maybe the Big Beat has more stick articulation? The 2002 definitely does.
In my humble opinion, it unequivocally goes like this : 1) Giant Beats ( far & away 1st place ) 2) Big Beats ( quite the contrast, I know ! Right.) 3) 2002's ( by no means taking away their greatness. ) These are difinetive choice by sounds for me. Again, Beauty is in the ear of the beholder. That being said I have to mention the stark and striking beauty of the drums chosen. Also, you guys are really impressing me with your Vlog. Really professional job guys. Kudos to you ! Subscribed ! 🔴⚪🔵
Fantastic video guys! I love all three lines, 2002 being number one for me, Giant Beat as my second choice and Big Beat as my third. I’d like to get all 3 sets eventually haha! 🥁
Thats what i always liked in Paiste and wnat makes me like them more than other brands: Their large, distinctive, easy reconizable diferent series of cymbals. I mix them all in my kit. Great vid as always guys .Thanks!!
I have a lot of paiste cymbals. Black label 2002's from 70's : 15"SE hats, 16" crash & 16 medium, 18" crash x 2, 20" crash x2 Red Label 16/18 med crash, 20" crash, 20" ride, 24" ride I just bought a 24" Giant beat ride and it is amazing. I already retired the 24" 2002 because the Giant beat sounds very good as a ride, but is 10x more crashable than the 2002 (about 1.5 lbs lighter) Look like I will be adding some Giant beat crashes now too
I hear metallic overtones in the 2002s that are a little harsh to my ears. But those Giant Beat and Big Beat cymbals are gorgeous. Especially the Big Beats. Evenly balanced with a buttery shimmer.
LOVE the big beats as crashes. I own a 20” and a 21”. Would love to see the 15” big beats get a sound edge line. Might have to get the 602s in the meantime :)
Might be a good idea, im playing on a set of F602s right now from the 3 years they sat around after i bought them used for 60$. Pretty great hats. My top hat has a minor crack
Loved the Giant beat then big beat didn't care much for the too tinny sound of the 2002's. The darker sound of the giant beat beat to.me sounds much better. Then again Paiste always did sound better. Coming from a guy who played all Sabian cymbals I never thought I could afford PAISTE. Went in today spent $1900 on cymbals and a used throne and cymbal bag. WEST COAST DRUMS (previously DONN BENNETT DRUMS) is amazing.
Giant Beats for me too. Explosive and washy in a beautiful way. 2002's are ok but too bright for me. Big Beats seem like an in-between but a little too gong-like. Good video!
I use big beats. The irony is the GBs and BBs are multis but are about 200g lighter then 2002s. A closer weight comparison would be if you used all 2002 thin crashes and the weights would be the same
oh, and surprisingly, the Big Beats were my favorite. I figured the Giant beats were my thing, but really like that little bit of trashiness in the big beats.
For me those 2002 Big Beat are the winners. The regular 2002 ride had an annoying high overtone in the end. Just a suggestion... if those cymbals are tagged as "multi-cymbals", "multi-purpouse cymbals" or just "cymbals" without any tag, I guess it would have been nice to play those 18" and 20" the same way you did with those 24", I mean, ridding the bow, the bell, crashing them and everything, and not only crashing them.
I was getting myself equipped with Classic 2002's, while hesitating with those Big beat. Damn, I'm definitely buying BB crashes. That Giant beat ride though. Thanks for the awesome video!
Kind of an absurd thing to say... They sound exactly like the cymbals they are, in the room they're in, through the microphones they're being recorded with, through the compressed audio you're hearing through your speakers, in the environment that you're in...
yes, . Signature Darks are really nice and mellow wonderful cymbals, and Masters are really sweet. 602s are great wheel chocks for your equipment van. Bring one along in case of breakdown to or from a gig
Paiste has done that for decades. I remember an article circa 1986 where Robert Paiste said that not only do they try to make cymbals within their respective lines work together, they also try to make cymbals across different lines work together, so if you had, say, some 602s, some 2002s, Giant Beats and Big Beats all in one setup, they would all work together.
Probably sounds weird, but 2002 sound edge hi hats, giant beat 18” and 20” and the 24” big beat is what I would choose. I wonder how they would all sound together.
I use 2002 thin crashes with a giant beat ride and they sound great together. They all use the same alloy but machined differently, they're like siblings in a way which is why it works. Only thing is the 2002 hats and heavier 2002 cymbals will noticeably cut through louder than the giant beats and darker big beats. Also signatures blend with these cymbals as well
I love the 2002 series! They impress me WAY more than anything Zildjian could come up with. There are harmonics in the 2002 series that I just can't find elsewhere, save for some of the Meinl cymbals out of Germany. Both Paiste and Meinl have nailed "glassy" harmonics using whatever those alloys are that they use. Paiste is more musical, more "ringy," much more "present" and pleasant to my ears. They're consistent, too, unlike Zildjians which can be either beautifully unique or bloody terrible depending on which lot you choose. I once had a 19" Zildjian Crash that I absolutely loved, until someone stole it from our studio! So, to each his own - but I'm a Paiste fanatic, fer sher! The 2002 alloy glows red. That's another reason why I love them! And 602's? Don't get me started. I won't shut up about how great the 602 series is.....different alloy, different sound.
I agree Ivan! I've used 2002's for decades now, and I won't use another cymbal. It's not that I'm not open-minded, it's just that the 2002's have given me the sounds I've always wanted, with their bright sound, quick attack and decay.
I've been using the Paiste Big Beat setup for two years now and I absolutely love those cymbals. They fit in any scenario. Sometimes that 24" is too much, so I'm thinking of buying a 22".
If the 24 realy thin, so it sounds deeper and are not so loud!!! Thin cymbul are good for less loudnes!!!

That shimmering overtone of the 2002 alloy is so beautiful and adds so much life to what ever music it is used for. Just listen too "Hallowed be thy Name" by Iron Maiden for example you can feel that 2002 shimmering.
giant beats all the way! sounds to me,like the big beat have less volume than the giant beat and 2002..but sound great also. i have a 15 inch giant beat hi hat ,a 20 inch crash (2002) and a 22 inch power ride 2002.. paiste its simple the best!
I loved the sound of the Giant Beats! I thought the other two lines were a bit gong-y. Saying that, I thought the 2002 ride sounded the best, so I'd probably go for Giant Beats all round with a 2002 ride.
I bought a set of each of these and swap them out and mix them up from gig to gig. The only constant in my set up is my 24 inch Giant Beat ride. That thing is a monster with lots of volume and a bell to die for.
Camber vs Maxi Tone vs Kingston cymbals please 😂 Just kidding love these videos it’s the reason I buy from DCP 👍 By the way Giant Beats FTW on this one
There is a whole lot to love in this video presentation. I am starting to come to the conclusion that Paiste offers the most diverse range of appealing, high-end lines of cymbals among all cymbal makers. The Signatures, 2002, Big Beat, Giant Beat, and 602 all sound so wonderful in different ways, and that doesn't even cover them all.
Great video as usual Shane, as a Paiste fanatic, a video like this is wonderful to see. Thank you again for being a great ambassador for the world of drumming!!
I purchased a big beat pack from you a year + ago and love them. I needed more articulation out of the ride so I got the 2002 Alex big ride. Also, I have paired the 18” 20” big beats with a 17” 19” thin 2002. Superb (also from your shop). Lastly, I replace the bottom big beat 15” hat with a meinl 15” extra dry med thin HH bottom (game changer!). Add my 2002 10” splash and 18” 20” nova china and I am locked and loaded. Love the videos.
I've had a bunch of 2002's and I can tell you, for crashes you are better off for thinner and bigger. 19" and 20" crash or light crash are the best choices. 18"and smaller are just not loud enough for live situations (clubs with maybe one or two overheads are okay, but with no overheads, they will sound like splashes). Check out Alex Van Halen's setup. all 19" and 20" crashes.
Great demo....one of the best really meaningful comparisons I've seen on a while. Waaay back when I started playing I was all about Paiste. All my drum heroes played them. When I stopped playing and transitioned in to studio engineering, my tastes changed. For years I've been into the dark and dry Turkish thing. Hearing these again brings back memories....it's such a familiar sound. For me the Big Beats are my overall faves, buy a narrow margin. The ride is gorgeous!. Crashes and hats are perfectly balanced. Darker but still full. The Giant Beats are REALLY nice cymbals with a classic character. Definitely the lightest/thinnest sounding, but not weak. Love the ride and crashes. Might be my first choice for recording?. 2002s are what they are, with no apologies!.....CRAAAAAAWWWWSSSHH!!!!!. Still great cymbals and fun play, will cut through anything!, but just not my taste anymore. Love the Traditional series since they sound the most like dark Turkish cymbals. I'll always be a fan of the old Sound Formulas, totally unique cymbals.........and 602s of course
Although I really have my heart set on a set of Big Beats for my next set of cymbals, this video really reminds me of how good the 2002s have always been. I personally don't think I'd use the Big Beats for Rock. I think the 2002s are better for Rock music, being clearer and more focused. But, for more intimate styles of music, the Big Beats excel, having that extra washyness and mystique. I find the Giant Beats to be the least interesting. but I can see how someone maybe playing in a classic rock band might like them.
