This is a demo of hi hats I wanted to sell but changed my mind. For a demo it does meander around mellow jazz fusion improvisation.
Activity for students: In the comments section write at what minute and second you hear / see the following:
1. Press roll (at least twice)
2. 5/8 time
3. Hi hat / bass drum unisons
4. Anywhere with hi hat shoulder playing
5. 3/4 time (could be thought of as 6/8)
6. Rallantando
Be aware that the dominance of the hi hat volume is a good test of its quality of the hi hats, as this was originally a demonstration of hi hats for sale. But control and generally low velocity of hi hat volume is of great importance in recording and playing live.
The Paiste Twenty series hi hats, in this case 13 inches in diameter, similar to the Masters series, are not the quietest, driest or darkest hi-hats I have played, but are mellow and have an attractive darkness which one could ironically call bright. I find this series of cymbal watery, like splashing, and one of the my favourite cymbals I own is the Twenty Series 17 inch thin crash. John Marshall, when I saw him playing with Soft Machine at the Jazz Cafe, London on May 2, 2019, had the whole set of either Twenty or Masters series, to my delight, including the Dark Dry Ride. Some say they are rock cymbals and for their velocity at low level playing, I would tend to agree, on the fringes of the jazz-fusion and psychedelic. But it depends how you use them, and hear them.
By the way John Marshall was amazing with Soft Machine, the only lasting member since their earlier days and in his 70s. He has a been a Paiste player since 1970.
