We all have heard of a story: a poor woman without being introduced to the finer aspects of life troubled a mendicant who came to her house daily and asked for alms. The next day when the mendicant came to her house with a bowl for alms, the woman brought kheer and poured in the bowl. But the bowl was full of cow dung. She told the mendicant about the bowl. He said for kheer to be eatable, the bowl should be clean. The same way, for any knowledge to be worth it, a person's mind should be equally capable of receiving it. 'Bina patra-ta ke koi bhi gyan gobar hi hai'. (without the worthiness of the recipient, any knowledge can be dangerous and without its honour). Therefore, ancient knowledge was confined to a few worthy men. That's why you'd observe ancient temples to be architectural wonders. These temples were centres of learning with only a few students studying there. Two things happened: the knowledge got confined into a few hands; and second, if the seers didn't find anyone capable enough for passing that knowledge, they did not divulge it to anyone. Result: that knowledge died down. Third was frequent invasions by those who were simply wicked plunderers. The University of Nalanda in Bihar was burnt down by Bakhtiyar Khilji. The university kept burning for six months and all the Buddhist students were beheaded. The same might have happened with Takshshila (modern Taxila) University. That's why you don't find any trace of knowledge treasured in those universities. The same happened with Tehran University. The entire university was destroyed by the Islamists. Tehran, as you know, stands in the middle of eastern and western world. So, all knowledge was lost. Regards
