The district is identified with the lives of sailors and working-class families of various professions. It houses the former camps "Sakelliona" 31 acres "Papadogeorgou '12 acres on which to create future green spaces and sports facilities.
The red was originally called "Kokkinada" as stated in the relevant topographic map of the late 19th century. As regards the origin of the name "Kokkinada" there are those who argue that due to the characteristic red color of the soil of the area and there is also the view that the term "Kokkinada" came about because of overgrown fields with poppies in the region.
One of the most striking points of the Palaia Kokkinia is the small orthodox byzantine church of Metamorfossi tou Sotiros(the Transfiguration of the Savior ), which was constructed between 1867-1869, under Mayor Demetrios Moutzopoulos. Today this small chapel in the middle of the square formed on the streets of Thebes, Agion Anargiron and Agrinio while on the same square is built the new Church of the Transfiguration. For residents of the district, the original chapel is known by the popular name of "Agia Sotira".
