I was born in palatine road at number 28 as for red light area wrong mate yes there is sometime a toothless prostitution at the old Yorkshire bank but it certainly is not red light area central drive is home to mostly foreign shop keepers selling illegal cigs you have no idea of the history of this street stop with your mongy videos and get a life
Hi Stephen, Hurrah I went to Palatine School as well. Started off behind the College on Palatine Rd then moved to St Annes Rd The College was always a College
That takes me back a bit. I got married to my wonderful wife Ann at Christ Church with All Saints in 1989. We had thirty lovely years together until she passed away in 2020. Michael Boulton
My first ever trip to Blackpool (July 1992, I remember it as we went to see Steve Wright at the R1 Roadshow!) we stayed in self catering flats on Palatine Road, we went back the following year and stayed there again (I believe they are still there, they’re not far from the hardware shop on the corner with Central Drive). This year I had the pleasure of staying in the Derwent Hotel (highly recommended!) which is a bit further up, while taking advantage of the free on street parking on Park Road 😉 Another great video ☺️👍🏻
i remember staying on palatine rd 1966 , i was in a scooter club (girls and boys) and me being the youngest at 16 after a few shandies the digs had a bedroom window that opened onto the bay window roof below, i was "robbed" of my clothes and pushed out there till i sobered up. happy days! great to see it again . thanks.
Great time in 1999 studying Media at Palatine, down to the Belle Vue at lunch for a couple of pints and there used to be a decent chippy right where you start the walk to the left.
Always still try and stay in Palatine Road. Opposite the church many many years ago used to be a coach company. It’s the location of the Libra hotel now.
Interesting how a street can be so different from one end to the other. Some of those B&B or hotels look quite fine establishments others looked like they have had their day. Nice vlog as ever Stephen 👌
A group of eight of us stayed at a Guest house on Paletine Rd in early nineties called Dukes, we later called it The Pukes, ladies of the night were working day and night straight opposite us behind some garages.
Reads avenue is exactly the same, and with me living near both of them I tend to avoid central drive end at all costs! Interesting video Stephen. Look forward to your 2 year anniversary video on more "gritty back streets revisited " on Sunday! 👍
I stayed at a b and b on palatine road where you walked past, the owner shouted at the guests for sitting at the wrong tables for breakfast.. 😟 great video 👍
i went to the college on Palatine rd on day release 80/84 when i was serving my time as a paint sprayer ,great time and very enjoyable, good lads and some very good tutors
I went to the old Palatine school all those years back but only for about 6 months, i can't remember how the front of the school looked now but i think i used to go in by a side road, i do remember the school clinic was on Bennett Ave that will forever stay in my mind as i had to see the Chiropodist kept going for weeks on end and hated it.
I always enjoy watching your videos. I'm always looking to spot, past B&B's/Hotels, which I have stayed in over the years. I can't remember the names, let alone where they were. Watching your videos is a great way, of finding your way around Blackpool, researching which location is good to stop at for you personally.
Brings back memories.last time i went down here was about 94 as i went to the college from 91 to 94 to do carpentry and joinery c.i.t.b they did photography upstairs i think
I did the same walk in May 2019 when I visited Blackpool to research some of my family history. No 246 was in my family c1911 to 1939. I was quite impressed by the college building.
This reminds me a bit of Cherry Hinton Road in Cambridge Lots of b n bs and smaller hotels plus there's Cherry Hinton Hall where they have the famous Cambridge Folk Festival every year Nice vid as always Stephen from David in Cromer 🍀❤️🇬🇧🎶📻🎤🎸🎷🎹🎾🇧🇷😁⚽
I think one of the things that would be great for Blackpool, would be to have it's own independent university that's successful in it's own right rather than a college operated in effect by Lancaster university. When I first moved upto Blackpool, I google map searched for sainsbury's and went to Sainsbury's Local on the main road at the end of Paletine road, and didn't know about the red light district section of paletine road, and asked why their was a ANPR camera sign at the central drive end, and that's when someone told me about the working girls. Let's just say I started giving it a wide birth as a result.
I worked as a special needs teacher at 'Blackpool College' (Palatine Rd/Bennett Ave) in the early 80s. I imagined myself as Sidney Poitier in 'To Sir With Love'. I was a science graduate with great family support and was really appreciated by my peers and supervisors. I was on a temporary contract and lost my job and, I believe, my place was taken by a lady with a permanent contract who taught flower arranging..... I trained as an accountant.....
According to old maps there were two school buildings on the site of what is now the university centre. So you are possibly right about it being Palatine School. However looking at number of, age and size of the buildings. It looks as though it may have always been a college. In 1974 it was known as Blackpool College of Technology and Arts.
Thanks Stephen for another fab video, can't wait for your next night walk, that was spooky the one you did inside the old police station, thanks for giving us all great entertainment 👍👍👍😊😊😊
I'm really enjoying your vlogs especially the one on mereside as I lived there till the early 90s on branstree Road keep em coming my good man. my granddad had a gas shop on central drive in the late 60s right through the 70s before he died unexpectedly
It's typical of most of b.pool that so many b+b have shut down over last 40 yrs n even more in last 20 but most English resorts are the same we are not coming down this year for our usual week in September going closer to home in Northumberland To Berwick holiday park but hoping to be down for 2 or 3 nights new year as my team playing at b.pool new yrs day
Attended Palatine Road College in early eighties,on a Vehicle Building Course organised by Duples Coach Builders.was in a building at the rear of the College in Ripon Road.Had my first ever KFC in Whitegate Drive, tasted far better than they do now, favourite Chip Shop was on Central Drive,at the top of Bethesda Drive, now long gone.Happy Times, area has gone downhill since.
Stephen I've now watched many of you're vlogs & really enjoy them! & I'm sorry if you have mentioned this, have you always lived in Blackpool & that's why you're so knowledgeable about the area.? I've probably visited 5 times in my life, & all occasions loved it! I remember going to the Syndicate nightclub, possibly one of the best nightclubs I've ever been to! it was amazing with the revolving circular dance floor.. Anyway, keep it going mate, what's not to like 👍
My sister & myself spent a week in Blackpool from 9th to16 th July, this year It's changed a lot, lots of boarded up shops plus loads of beggars. I was forced to Email Blackpool council to complain about Manchester pedestrian traffic lights.
I can remember a holiday at a guest house on palatine Road in the late 90s it wasn't particularly very good. Can't remember the name of it but would never go back to that guest house again. It wasn't very clean.
i used to go to Blackpool back in the day with the lads from down south, did like going to the locals pubs in the backstreets, used to have a great time, but ive heard alot of them have now gone, it was never like it was now with all the B & Bs full of druggie scum, was gonna go a few years ago but couldnt because of illness, but do remember that 2 n in the Big Blue plus train fare from Reading, was the same price as 3 n in Berlin with flights in a 4star hotel. How times have changed
Can anyone remember the name of the guest house ran by Howell and Joan? I think that was their names. I’m trying to remember the place we stayed at when I was a kid.
Hi Steven. Was wondering if Woodfield Rd. South Prom. Was still there..My nanna had a boarding house 🏠 no 23.. During 2nd world war...Many thanks Steve XX
Takes me some getting used to what are referred to as hotels over there would barely pass for a B&B here in the US. It's a shame all the boarded up buildings, commercial and residential. I assume owners want outrageous amounts of rent for their places? That's the way it is where I live; landlords want to make a killing; if they can't get what they want, they'd rather let a place sit empty and fall apart than lower the rent. Doesn't make sense.
Bring on Rebellion Festival 4th August till the 7th be great to be in Blackpool then and don't forget R Festival opposite the tower that weekend not all punk bands
@@TheExplodingGerbil it should be another great weekend and as you been a local I'm sure you know us Skinheads and punk's cause no bother unlike certain nameless others might
Yeah they went down well with the crowd. They’ve come to my town only once, they are Sydney mob. Bulldog Spirit is me favourite Aussie oi band, but short lived. I’ll never get to Blackpool again, or anywhere, unless they change the jab laws. Running Riot, they were killer.
stayed in palatine road in the 80s ... id rather sleep on the beach now ... poor Blackpool they are trying to polish a turd .. get rid of the sleze and you might stand a chance of regaining some respect ..
Stuck in time Should get heritage status Buy to let may crash so loads of these places go to auction Dead bodies too You must be a postman you should post sone leaflets you would be the ruchest man in blackpool
