Those arms and horns were clearly used as indicators, as Carnotaurus was so fast and had such a big turning circle. They could also fool enemies in pursuit by flashing right but turning left.

Maybe the horns served as shading for the eyes? If the boneplates where covered in skin it could have stretched forward slightly, giving it the edge of being harder to blind by sunlight, hence giving it a massive advantage for mid-day hunting.

@@Alex-mp7te interesting theory, my only reservation is that carnotaurus horns were made of solid bone. That is a lot of effort for simply having some shade. The snake you speak of uses scales [which from what we know other dinosaurs also had]. Many theropods predators today have different ways of dealing with the suns glare, none use massive horns. Those bony horns were hard, and carnotaurus skull was solid. I am not saying they hunter with horns, but i do think it was a tool used for interspecies combat. Looking at the animal, i also could imagine them kicking a lot during interspecies combat.
@DamonDraven
@DamonDraven 5 лет назад
@@robinsonray6766 What if it was both? If they strictly used them for combat only, wouldn't it have been better if the horns pointed more forwards, instead of pointing to the sides? Just a guess, I'm not very informed on the whole matter at all.

great point was likely some convergence evolution. Carnotaurus also had long legs, when defending itself it likely got into a vertical stance to make itself look bigger [5 meters tall maybe], then it could kick its opponent with its powerful legs, similar to what all big non avian birds do today. If things got serious bites with headbutts would kick in

I think the horns could be used in a mix of the two, very similar to deers. The horns would first attract the mate then if another male appears they would be used for pushing each other for dominance over the female.

If carnotaurus ritual combat involved biting and shaking like komodo and iguana combat involves, the the purpose of the eye plates becomes clear..... to stop your opponents agile neck and jaws from grabbing from the top of the head in such a way as to blind the victim. The jaws are not large enough to reach the eyes from a bottom bite. Only a bite from the top could get the eyes. The mouth cannot fit around the bony plates, and vision is preserved.

Seems like an oddly specific reason to evolve such a structure. If keratin horns protect the eyes, logic would dictate that MOST theropod dinosaurs would have them. Not saying it's impossible, just implausible.
@TheDragonCat99
@TheDragonCat99 6 лет назад
+The Wold of Comedy There are a lot of evolutionary traits that seem like they'd be obvious and important, but don't actually end up in a lot of species because, simply, no creature in that line gained the proper mutations. For example, there's no reason that cartilaginous fish should lack the ability to move water through their gills while still, yet they still can't. It's not that boney fish have structures that are necessarily better suited to this ability, it's just that the boney fish line happened to have the right mutations and the cartilaginous fish never got those. At least, that's the theory I've heard. With the carnotaurus eye guard thing, it could be that is was advantageous, but only carnotaurus developed the mutations for it. It's also possible that it is the result of their tiny arms. It's reasonable to believe that a lot of other theropods would fight with their claws on occasion, but for carnotaurus that wouldn't be possible. Even with the larger arms of other theropods, they wouldn't be able to reach all the way up to the eyes, so eye damage was possibly less common. However, if carnotaurus battled almost exclusively with their mouths, eye injuries could be more common. Anyway, there's no way to know for sure, but this is what I think.
@miskakopperoinen8408
@miskakopperoinen8408 6 лет назад
I'd just like to remind that most cartilaginous fish do not need to swim in order to breathe. There's a specific group of large sharks and rays that are called ram breathers that need to swim in order to breathe, but cartilaginous fish as a collective have evolved numerous methods for breathing while not moving with the rays having probably the most exquisite ones.

I think that both of the probable horn hypotheses are correct. I think that at first males would have displayed first, then if both males are equals in display would a pushing match ensue. I base this on how game roosters display first, then fight.
@jamesathersmith2191
@jamesathersmith2191 6 лет назад
Griffin Giles I agree as if there horns are flat and the have strong neck muscles plus how the bones in the head are fused would suggest they were used in shoving matches and they could also be used in display. The arm waggling could also be used to intimidate rival males and the shoving match thing being used as a last resort as you said

well first of all the two birds he kept referring to don't use those horns on their heads for looks so much as they are hollow chambers that allow them to produce a loud, deep, and long distant call to females that's very distinct. I think that dinosaur evolved those horns as like that to acts as shielding for the eyes perhaps from the sun or rain, you I mean what was the weather like, perhaps the sun was scorching or maybe it rained heavy all the time there like it does now.

7 years later, the latest mainstream representation of carnotaurus in prehistoric planet makes for such a good one, with the underside of thos stubby arms being a bright blue, moving here and there during a mting ritual where the male moves his whole body up and down as to show both his massive tail and his upper parts one after the other. You should contact the Ark devs and be their dinosaur consultant or something XD While a lot of inaccuracies in the game are mostly for the gameplay (eg half the animals being huge/strong enough to ride) I think you could point out a lot of aesthetic inaccuracies that could be fixed by simply changing a model. Or they could completely ignore you. But hopefully the former, just to make them as accurate as possible without changing the game.

I would say, MOST animals in ark are oversized, from dung beetles to the Giganotosaurus, or have disproportionate bodies or limbs. Although I don't agree with all of their artistic choices, I can understand their design decisions are based more on gameplay than realism (I'm pretty sure a pteranodon couldn't lift up a human adult let alone two wearing armor and weapons lol).

I really like the idea of a carnotaurus having a throat pouch, and thinking about them doing some kind of elaborate birdlike mating display made me imagine if they did have some kind of throat pouch, maybe it could have been inflated as a part of display, like a frigate bird. Just a random thought, but i thought it would be a fun idea since carnotaurus is already one of the weirdest dinosaurs ever.

I've also heard that cassowaries may use their crests for cooling purposes and/or to push brush out of the way when running through denser growth. Maybe one or both of those theories may apply to the carnotaurus horns as well. Would make sense to have protection to push tree limbs outta the way if you can run fast but not maneuver well. If anyone has commented about this already I apologize for repeating information 4 years after the video was posted but since it wasn't mentioned in the video I just wanted to share the theories I had heard.

I really feel Carnotaurus used its horns like a sun visor. The horns are *perfectly* above the eyes allowing shade for them during the brightest part of the day. Cheetahs have similar adaptations with the black stripes on its face to absorb light to help them see. Both are high speed predators of small prey that rely on vision to hunt, so I feel both of these adaptations have a similar purpose.

New antlers, coated with a furry, velvet-like cover, start to form in the spring. By fall, the antlers are fully grown, but the velvet coat starts to itch. So, deer look to our trees to smooth out their new crown. In winter, deer rub their antlers against trees to scrape off the velvet cover. Even knew this is well known wherever you heard that the gouge out trees for resin is such bullcrap I'm surprised someone is dumb enough to think that!!!

My personal theory on a possible use for Carnotaurus' horns could be that they were used when ambushing potential prey. Like a Cheetah, Carnotaurus may have hid in tall grass or brush for prey to come close before sprinting full force at their victim. If it was a small creature they could have simply done as stated in the video, using their jaws and neck like a hatchet or club. But if the prey was slightly larger such as an ornithopod, then Carnotaurus could have used its horns as a ram to knock its prey off balance by charging into their sides, legs or head before going in for a killing blow. I personally think this because the thought of a 10ft tall dinosaur charging head first towards something at 30+mph is fucking terrifying.
@sarenbinkerd4162
@sarenbinkerd4162 5 лет назад
My theory for the horns was for display as well as shading in bright light, much like the large brow bones of soaring and desert birds. If the carnotaurus is designed to run very straight, very fast, chances are there's not a lot of trees and obstacles to block light, and glare would be a big issue. Even cheetahs have black marks and brows to reduce light glare. Your videos are fantastic and I look forward to more!
@stephenclark5500

Couldnt the throat pouch also have been used for mating? Maybe the animal would bloat it up with air to appear bigger and thus a more suitable mate. Or it could have been used in fighting for a mate pumping them up to appear again bigger to the opponent.

Kristobro98 Frogs bloat up their throat poaches right? If the Caron could do that then maybe it was related to a frog

Eli Workman, I know I'm late, but just because it had a throat pouch that could of maybe bloated up doesn't mean it was related to frogs, but you never know, that's just the wonder of evolution and life before mankind existed, however Carnotaurus having a throat pouch that could have possible bloated up was probably just a case of convergent evolution. I'm not mad, I just want to educate you. :)

Extremely unlikely. Just because an animal shares a trait with another animal we shouldn't assume they were related to or an ancestor of the animal in question. (At least not with carnos and frogs, considering how otherwise outlandishly far apart they are in the evolutionary chain of the world)

I often think what if, when it comes to these really unique specimens, that their defining features are simply birth defects? This carnotaurus' pigmy arms for example. I hate that we can't know, at least for now. Great video!
